Longevity beauty — anti-ageing is a lifestyle, not a cream

For decades, the beauty industry sold us one big lie: that anti-ageing comes down to the right jar. Recent research in longevity medicine tells a different story. Genuine anti-ageing starts at cellular level. It's a result of lifestyle, not INCI lists. Longevity beauty doesn't treat skin as a separate organ that needs "fixing" with creams. Longevity — not a trend, a scientific revolution

Five years ago, "longevity" brought to mind eccentric Silicon Valley billionaires checking their NAD+ levels before breakfast. Today it's one of the fastest-growing areas of medicine, and its influence on dermatology and aesthetic medicine is hard to overstate.

Longevity beauty doesn't treat skin as a separate organ that needs "fixing" with creams. It treats skin as a mirror of processes happening inside the body. Skin ageing — loss of firmness, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation — is the outward sign of processes that begin at the level of mitochondria, telomeres and cell signalling.

Telomeres — your biological clock

At the end of every chromosome sit telomeres — protective structures that shorten with each cell division. Once they become too short, the cell enters a state called senescence. It stops dividing and starts releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines. This phenomenon, known as SASP (senescence-associated secretory phenotype), is one of the main drivers of skin ageing.

Research published in The Lancet found that people with shorter telomeres look, on average, several years older than peers with longer telomeres. What affects telomere length?

  • Chronic stress — cortisol can significantly speed up telomere shortening
  • Lack of sleep — people who sleep less than 6 hours have noticeably shorter telomeres
  • A sedentary lifestyle — regular physical activity activates telomerase
  • A pro-inflammatory diet — simple sugars, processed food, trans fats

NAD+ — the molecule cells can't repair themselves without

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme present in every living cell. It's responsible for DNA repair, mitochondrial energy production and activating sirtuins — proteins often called "longevity genes."

The problem? NAD+ levels fall with age. By midlife, we have significantly less than we did in youth. The effects are visible to the naked eye: skin regenerates more slowly, wounds heal more slowly, and collagen breaks down faster than it's produced.

Autophagy — cellular recycling that turns back the clock

In 2016, Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize for discovering the mechanisms of autophagy — the process by which a cell "eats" its own damaged components and reuses them as building material for new structures. It's cellular recycling at its finest.

Autophagy is key to skin health. It clears out damaged collagen proteins, degraded organelles and lipofuscin deposits (the brown pigment of ageing). When autophagy works efficiently, skin can regenerate faster and hold on to a youthful look for longer.

  • Fasting — even a dozen or so hours of fasting can significantly boost autophagy
  • Exercise — endurance training especially
  • Hormesis — controlled stress (more on this in the next section)
  • Spermidine — a polyamine found in wheat germ, aged cheese and shiitake mushrooms, among others

Hormesis — stress that turns back the clock

Hormesis is one of biology's paradoxes: a small amount of stress strengthens the body. The principle is simple — what doesn't kill you can genuinely help you age better. Provided the dose is right.

Blue Zones — what the longest-living people know

In five regions of the world — Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Ikaria (Greece), Nicoya (Costa Rica) and Loma Linda (California) — people live exceptionally long lives and stay fit well into old age. Researcher Dan Buettner, who studied these communities for over a decade, identified common patterns.

  • Natural movement — not the gym, but daily walking, gardening, activity built into everyday routine
  • Hara hachi bu — eating until 80% full (a practice from Okinawa)
  • A plant-based diet — beans, vegetables and nuts as the foundation, meat only occasionally
  • Community — strong social bonds, a sense of belonging
  • A sense of purpose (ikigai) — people with a sense of purpose live, on average, several years longer

Collagen — from supplementation to stimulation

Collagen makes up the vast majority of the skin's dry mass. After the age of 25, its production gradually declines. The result? Loss of firmness, thinner skin, deepening wrinkles.

Collagen supplementation (collagen peptides) has some backing in research — meta-analyses suggest a possible improvement in skin elasticity and hydration after a few months of use. But this is still an "outside-in" approach.

The longevity approach goes deeper. Instead of supplying ready-made collagen, it focuses on stimulating fibroblasts — the cells that produce it. With age, fibroblasts "fall asleep." They enter a state of senescence and produce less and less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The key is waking them up.

  • Retinol — may activate genes responsible for collagen synthesis
  • Adequate protein intake — the foundation for building new structures
  • Resistance exercise — stimulates mechanotransduction in fibroblasts

Anti-ageing from within vs. from outside — a false choice
