Curly, thick, frizz-prone hair has its own character — but morning styling can turn into a battle with the straightener, and humid air undoes it anyway. Keratin straightening is a styling treatment that seals the hair cuticle and replenishes keratin in the hair shaft: strands become smoother, straighter, less prone to static, and drying time is cut in half.

This isn't "chemical straightening gone rigid" — hair keeps its softness and shine, it just stops misbehaving. At J'adore Instytut, the treatment is performed by an experienced hair stylist. How it works

How it works

Every hair has a cuticle on its surface — tiny "shingles" that stand up and scatter light when hair is damaged and frizzy (which is why it looks dull and static-prone). Keratin straightening replenishes keratin in the hair shaft and seals the cuticle, so the strand becomes smoother, straighter and reflects light better.

Your stylist applies a keratin formula to freshly washed hair, then sets it with heat from a blow-dryer and straightener — the heat "locks" the ingredients into the hair. Result: less frizz, shorter drying time, more shine. This is styling and hair care, not a medical treatment — hair stays soft, just more disciplined.

For men, keratin straightening works well on thick, wavy, "unmanageable" hair — when volume and frizz make styling difficult. The goal: disciplined, easier-to-style hair, without a flat-ironed look.

Fun fact: keratin is the same protein your hair, nails, and even animal horns and hooves are made of. So the treatment doesn't "glue on" anything foreign — it simply replenishes what your hair has lost.

What to look out for

For a beautiful, safe result

Keratin straightening is a pleasant cosmetic treatment — but as with any good styling service, quality depends on the formula and the stylist's skill. It's worth asking about three things:

  1. Which formulaAsk whether the salon works with a formaldehyde-free variant — it's more pleasant during the treatment and better for sensitive individuals. At J'adore, we prefer these formulas.
  2. Whether the stylist matches the variant to your hairFine hair needs a different formula and intensity than thick, very curly hair — this isn't "one treatment for everyone".
  3. How to care for the result at homeA good salon will tell you straight away about the first ~72-hour routine and about sulphate-free shampoo — without it, the result fades faster.
Red flag: a suspiciously cheap treatment and an irritating smell

A very low price, no questions about pregnancy when using a formaldehyde-based formula, and a sharp, irritating smell with stinging eyes during the treatment are signs something's wrong. You have every right to ask which formula is being used and whether it's formaldehyde-free. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding — tell your stylist: we'll choose a formaldehyde-free variant or postpone the treatment.

What to expect during your visit

  2. Cleansing washa special shampoo opens the cuticle so keratin can penetrate the strands.

This is a longer chair session — time depends on hair length and thickness. It's worth setting aside a calm afternoon and not planning to wash your hair right after.

What's normal after the treatment

  • for the first few days, hair looks very straight and "sleek" — this is temporary; after the first wash it returns to its natural lightness;

  • a feeling that hair is "heavier" and smoother than usual — that's exactly the point.

The result fades gradually, along with the growing hair — there's no sharp regrowth line like with colouring, so your hairstyle "blends" nicely instead of suddenly returning to frizz.

Aftercare

The first 72 hours matter most

This is the most important part of the whole treatment. Keratin needs time to set into the hair — so for the first ~72 hours, hair should stay straight, dry and loose. Breaking these rules is the most common reason results fade too quickly.

  1. Washing your hair

    This is rule number one. Water before keratin has set "washes out" the fresh result. Hold off for the first three days — it's an investment in how long the results last.

  2. Tying up and hair bands

    No ponytails, clips, headbands or tucking hair behind your ears — any bend can leave a permanent "kink" in straightened hair.

  3. Sweat and exertion

    skip for ~72 hours

    Intense training, hot yoga or a walk in the heat means sweat on the scalp, which acts like washing. Better to wait out these first few days.

  4. Pool and sea

    avoid for a few days

    Chlorine and sea salt are harsh on fresh keratin and shorten how long it lasts. Plan your treatment away from any trip to the water.

  5. Sulphate-free shampoo

    from the first wash onwards

    After 72 hours, wash your hair with a gentle, SLS-free (sulphate-free) shampoo — regular, heavily cleansing formulas strip keratin faster.

  6. Sleep and pillowcase

    Sleep with your hair down; a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and helps keep hair smooth for longer.

When it's better to postpone the treatment

Keratin straightening is a treatment for a healthy scalp — a few situations are simply worth waiting out:

  1. Pregnancy and breastfeedingwith formaldehyde-based formulas. Tell your stylist: we'll choose a formaldehyde-free variant or postpone the treatment.
  2. Irritated scalpscratches, abrasions, fresh wounds, heavy flaking.
  3. Allergy or a previous reactionto keratin or the formula's ingredients.
  4. Very recent, strong colouring or bleachingsometimes it's better to give your hair a few days' rest before the treatment.

    AnswerNot quite — and that's not the goal. Keratin straightening smooths hair, reduces frizz and makes styling easier, but keeps some of your hair's natural character. If you want stronger, longer-lasting straightening for resistant curls, nanoplastia may be a better choice.
  2. QuestionHow long do results last?
    AnswerApproximately a few months (most often 3–5). It all depends on your hair type, how often you wash it, and home care — a sulphate-free shampoo and avoiding chlorine can noticeably extend the results.
