BROWS & LASHES

Softly powdered brows
“no pencil”

In the morning you reach for a pencil or brow pomade, in the evening it comes off with your makeup — and during the day your brows seem to "fade" anyway. Powder henna does this for you, for weeks at a time. This isn't ordinary hair tinting: the pigment settles on the hairs and on the skin beneath them at the same time, so the brow looks softly defined — powder-filled, denser, with a soft shadow wherever nature left it too sparse. It's a "makeup" effect, but your own: no hard line like a marker, no stiff outline.

At J'adore Instytut, the treatment is performed by a brow & lash stylist. Below you'll find everything worth knowing before your first visit.

  • Sparse or light brows
  • Gaps and thin patches
  • Daily brow makeup
  • A "softly defined" look with no commitment
  • A trial before PMU
  • A complete styling service

BROWS & LASHES

What powder henna actually is

Powder henna is a dye used for brow styling that works on two levels at once: it colours the hairs and, at the same time, deposits pigment on the skin beneath them. This is the key difference from ordinary tinting, which colours the hair alone.

This means that wherever your brows are sparser or have gaps, a soft, powder shadow appears — and the whole brow looks denser and evenly filled. That's where the name "powder" comes from: the result looks like a softly powdered, makeup-style shape, not a sharp line drawn with a pencil or marker.

Good to know: what's commonly called "brow henna" in salons is very often not classic henna from the lawsonia plant at all, but a modern styling dye with a powder or gel texture. The marketing name stayed the same, but the technology moved on — that's why today's powder henna gives a more natural, "shaded" effect than the reddish henna of years past.

How it works

How it works

Once applied, the dye works on two completely different surfaces at once for around fifteen minutes. On the hair, it bonds with keratin — the same tough protein that makes up hair and nails, which once coloured doesn't renew itself. In the skin, the pigment stays only in the stratum corneum, the most superficial layer of cells that the body constantly sheds anyway. These aren't the same reaction happening in two places — they're two separate mechanisms that together produce one combined effect.

This leads to the most important practical consequence: the colour fades along two different tracks, at two different speeds. The epidermis sheds continuously and carries the pigment away with it, and washing your face, sebum, acids and sun all speed up this process — that's why the powder fill fades fastest on oily skin. The hair holds its shade for as long as it stays in the skin, so darkened brows last noticeably longer than the soft shadow beneath them. Shape is a separate layer of the work: since the pigment draws the brow even where there's no hair, the stylist first defines the outline — the start, the highest point and the end — in relation to the line of the nose, the corner of the eye and facial proportions. The same shade traced along two different lines gives two completely different expressions.

Three levels in cross-section: the brow hairs on top, the epidermis between them beneath, and deepest of all the dermis. The colour settles on the hairs and in the stratum corneum of the skin between them. The colour fades as the epidermis exfoliates, not from any deeper layer.

Good to know: eyebrow hair has a much shorter life cycle than the hair on your head — it grows for a few weeks and then enters a resting phase, rather than growing continuously for years. That's why brows never grow to plait length on their own — and why colour on the hair, though it lasts longer than colour on the skin, eventually leaves with the natural hair turnover.

Ideal for

Ideal for

  1. Sparse or light browswhen there's naturally not enough density, or the hairs are so light the brow "disappears" on the face.
  2. Gaps and thin patchesafter years of shaping, or over-plucking, leaving local gaps to fill with colour.
  3. Daily brow makeupif you draw your brows with a pencil or pomade every morning and want a break from it for a few weeks.
  4. A "softly defined" look with no commitmentyou want a filled-in, makeup-style look, but not permanently (this is not a tattoo).
  5. A trial before PMUbefore committing to permanent makeup, powder henna shows you what a fuller brow looks like.
  6. A complete styling servicebest paired with shaping (form) and/or lamination (hair positioning).

Women's and men's approach

What's different

For her

Brows that look like makeup — without makeup

This is primarily a women's service. The goal: a fuller, more defined, yet still natural brow — powder-filled where needed, with a soft shadow instead of a hard outline. This is classic powder henna for women.

The areas we support

  1. filling gaps and shaping a denser arch;
  2. shade matching to hair colour and complexion — from cool to warm tones;
  3. a powdery, "makeup" look for everyday wear and for photos;
  4. often paired with shaping (form) and lamination (positioning).
For him

Brows that sharpen your look — without looking like makeup

For men, powder henna for men is used less often and always cautiously — a man's brow should look groomed, not "coloured in". More often we use shaping alone, or a very subtle, gentle darkening of individual gaps.

The areas we support

  1. the priority is shape and order — too much colour gives away "done" brows;
  2. if colour is used at all, it's the faintest touch, in a natural, cool shade;
  3. shaping unibrows, grey or unruly hairs;
  4. result: brows look well groomed, not made up.

For men, we usually recommend starting with **brow shaping & architecture** alone, adding colour — if at all — very minimally. It's the safer route to a natural, masculine result.

The patch test

Why we always do one

Powder henna is a tinting product — it acts on the skin, so, as with hair dye, it can (rarely, but it happens) trigger an allergic reaction. That's why, for new clients, and also after a longer break or when the product changes, we carry out a patch test before the treatment.

  1. What it involveswe apply a small amount of the product to a discreet area (behind the ear or on the inside of the elbow) and observe the skin's reaction before the actual styling.
  2. Why we do itto rule out redness, itching or irritation before the dye reaches the eye area.
  3. Whenat the first visit, and always when the product changes or you return after a longer gap.
Red flag: a salon that "skips the patch test"

If you hear "oh, you'll be fine, let's just go ahead" — that's a warning sign. With brow dyes, a patch test is a safety standard, not an unnecessary formality. A second red flag is being pushed towards a very dark colour "because it shows up better" — henna that's too dark ages the face and looks artificial. A good stylist will tend to tone the shade down rather than deepen it.

What to expect during your visit

  1. Consultation and colour matchingyour stylist assesses your brows, complexion and hair colour, agrees on the expected result and chooses the shade. This is also when we discuss the patch test.
  2. Shape correction (optional)if your brows need it, we first shape them with tweezers or wax, so the henna highlights an already tidy arch.
  3. Outlininga gentle marking of the brow line, so the colour lands exactly where it should build density.
  4. Applying the henna and letting it developthe dye works on the hairs and skin; the longer it develops, the more intense the result. This is the stage where you simply relax.
  5. Removing the product and finishing toucheswe remove the henna, assess the result, and correct if needed. Sometimes we add lamination so the hairs sit perfectly.

Contraindications

When to postpone your visit

Powder henna is a gentle cosmetic service, but the skin around the eye can be sensitive — in some situations, we simply postpone the visit until the area has settled.

We don't perform it
  • Allergic reaction to dyesa positive patch test, or a previous allergy to henna or hair dye; in this case, we don't carry out the treatment.
  • Eye infection or inflammationstye, conjunctivitis, blepharitis around the eye — we wait until it has healed.
  • Irritated or damaged brow skinfresh cuts, abrasions, breakouts, active inflammation around the brows.
  • Recent treatments nearbyshortly after a peel, laser or strong acids on the forehead or temples, we give the skin time.
  • Very recent brow PMUthe interval is agreed individually, so as not to irritate healing skin.

From the stylist's perspective

The thing clients most often forget: the patch test after a break. Clients who've "always had henna done" are sometimes surprised I suggest it again when the product changes. Skin can become sensitised to something it once tolerated — better to check than to regret it.

This isn't a complete list — we'll discuss your sensitivity, allergies and any previous treatments around the eye area individually at your visit.

What to expect

No surprises

Most importantly: right after the treatment, brows are darker than they'll end up. This is normal — the strongest colour settles on the skin and gradually "settles" to the true shade over the first day or two.

  1. Faza 1.right afterbrows are deliberately darker and saturated — this isn't the final result
  2. Faza 2.1–2 dayscolour "settles", revealing the true, natural shade
  3. Faza 3.following dayscolour on the skin fades fastest, while colour on the hairs lasts longer
  4. Faza 4.a few weeksthe effect gradually softens — time for a refresh
Some clients think "too dark!" right after the visit. I always warn them: judge your brows the next day, not in the chair. After the first day, the colour on the skin settles and what remains is exactly the shade we agreed on.
From the stylist's perspective

What's normal right after the treatment

  • noticeably darker, richly saturated colour right after the product is removed;
  • a slight touch of colour on the skin around the brows — it fades with the first few times you wash your face;
  • sometimes a brief feeling of "fresh" tightness around the brows — it passes quickly.

How long it lasts depends on you and your skin. On the hairs, henna lasts a few weeks (until natural hair turnover); on the skin it fades faster — fastest of all on oily skin. So the result isn't "once and for all" — it's a pleasant ritual you refresh every few weeks.

After the treatment

How to look after the colour

Powder henna requires no recovery time — you go straight back to your day. But to keep the colour lasting as long as possible (especially the skin colour, which drives the "powder" effect), it's worth going easy on your brows for the first day or two.

  1. Water and prolonged brow washing

    go easy for 1–2 days

    For the first day or two, avoid soaking your brows or scrubbing the area for long — water washes the fresh colour out of the skin. Cleanse your face gently, avoiding the brows.

  2. Oils and creams on the brows

    hold off for 1–2 days

    Rich cosmetics and oils applied directly to the brows in the first few days dissolve the pigment. Start oil-based brow care only once the colour has settled.

  3. Sauna, pool, hot steam

    skip for 1–2 days

    Hot steam, chlorinated water and heavy sweating speed up fading. Avoid the sauna and pool for the first 1–2 days — after that, no restrictions.

  4. Sun and SPF

    protect the colour daily

    Strong sun draws the colour out of the brows. Daily SPF on the face (including the brows) genuinely extends how long the henna lasts — it's the simplest way to keep the colour going longer.

  5. Peels and acids on the face

    avoid the brow area

    Peels, acids and strong exfoliation near the brows wear the colour off the skin. When caring for your face, avoid the brow zone, especially in the first few days.

  6. Makeup and daily life

    straight away — but you can skip the brows

    No restrictions on makeup for the rest of the face. The whole point of henna is that you can skip your brows entirely — they're already filled in. You return to work straight after the visit.

Frequently asked questions

  1. QuestionHow does powder henna differ from classic henna?
    AnswerClassic henna colours mainly the hair itself. Powder henna colours the hairs and the skin beneath them at the same time, building a soft, "powdery" shadow and filling in gaps — the result is more "makeup-like", like a softly defined brow.
  2. QuestionHow long does the result last?
    AnswerA few weeks on the hairs, until natural hair turnover. Less time on the skin, and fastest of all on oily skin. This is a temporary treatment, refreshed every few weeks rather than a one-off, permanent result.
  3. QuestionWhy are my brows so dark right after the treatment?
    AnswerThis is normal and deliberate. The strongest colour settles on the skin and gradually "settles" to the target shade over the first day or two. Judge your brows the next day, not in the chair.
  4. QuestionWill I look like I've been "drawn on with a marker"?
    AnswerNo, not with a well-matched shade. Powder henna gives a soft, shaded result, not a hard line. It's a colour that's too dark — not the technique itself — that makes brows look artificial, which is why we choose the shade carefully.
