"I stand for 8 hours at work" — what happens to your legs and feet

Standing work has a cost — but you can lower it.

In Poland, more than 3 million people spend most of their working day on their feet. Shop assistants, nurses, hairdressers, teachers, waitresses, beauticians — most treat leg pain as part of the job description. Yet what happens beneath the skin can, and should, be stopped.

Gravity isn't your friend

To understand why standing for 8 hours is so damaging, it helps to know one simple rule of physiology: blood in the veins of your legs flows uphill — against gravity. At the heart of this process are venous valves — microscopic "flaps" inside the veins. They open to let blood flow towards the heart, and close to stop it flowing back down.

When you walk, your calf muscles (the so-called muscle pump) rhythmically squeeze the veins and help the valves along. When you stand still, the pump doesn't work. Hydrostatic pressure in your leg veins rises with every passing minute.

Varicose veins and spider veins — more than a cosmetic issue

Varicose veins are widened, twisted superficial veins in which the valves have stopped working properly. Spider veins (telangiectasia) are their "younger siblings" — dilated capillaries visible just beneath the skin, usually red or purple.

Chronic venous insufficiency affects 30–40% of adult women in Poland, and standing work can significantly increase the risk of developing it. Varicose veins aren't "just" a cosmetic problem — they can lead to venous thrombosis, leg ulcers and chronic pain.

  • A feeling of heaviness in the legs that worsens in the evening
  • Visible veins "creeping" under the skin — bluish, raised
  • Spider veins on the calves, thighs, behind the knees
  • Night-time calf cramps
  • Swollen ankles — shoes that fit perfectly in the morning and feel tight by evening

Swelling — when your legs "puff up"

Swelling in the lower limbs from standing work isn't about "not drinking enough water". It's a physiological consequence of fluid pooling in the tissues under gravity, combined with impaired lymphatic drainage.

The lymphatic system — often called the body's "drainage network" — collects excess tissue fluid and carries it back into circulation. The problem is that the lymphatic system has no pump of its own. It depends on muscle movement, breathing and walking.

Feet: the foundations nobody looks after

The human foot is an architectural marvel — 26 bones, 33 joints, over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Designed for walking, running, climbing. Not for standing still on a flat surface for an entire shift.

Hallux valgus — "that big toe"

Bunions affect around 23% of adults aged 18–65. Among women who stand at work in uncomfortable footwear — heels, narrow toe boxes, thin unsupportive soles — the risk is significantly higher.

The mechanism is simple: chronic pressure on the front of the foot causes the metatarsal bones to spread apart and the big toe to deviate outward. In the early stages, correctors, orthotic insoles and a change of footwear can slow the process. At an advanced stage, surgery remains the only option.

Corns, calluses, hard skin — a signal, not a problem

Thickened layers of skin on the feet are a defensive response to repeated pressure and friction. A corn is telling you: "Something's wrong here — it hurts here — this shoe doesn't fit". Removing a corn without addressing its cause is only treating the symptom.

Plantar fasciopathy — that morning heel pain

You put your foot on the floor after a night's sleep and feel a sharp pain in your heel — as if someone had driven in a nail. After a few steps, the pain eases. This is a classic symptom of plantar fasciopathy (formerly known as plantar fasciitis).

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue running from the heel bone to the toes, forming the arch of the foot. Chronic overload — long hours standing, hard flooring, shoes with no cushioning — leads to micro-tears and inflammation of this structure.

Prevention: what actually works

Now that you know what's happening, it's time to talk about what you can do. And no — this isn't just "drink more water" and "take breaks" (though the second one is true).

  • Heel-toe raises: rise onto your toes → lower onto your heels, a dozen or so repetitions, several times a day
  • Ankle circles: rotate your feet in both directions — loosens the ankle joints, boosts circulation
  • Picking up a towel with your toes: builds the small muscles inside the foot, supports the arch
  • Rolling a fascia ball: works the plantar fascia in the evening — a few minutes per foot

Don't wait for it to get worse

Most leg and foot problems develop insidiously — so slowly that you start to normalise the pain. "My legs always hurt after work" becomes your new normal. But it doesn't have to be this way.

The key is prevention, not reaction. The sooner you start looking after your legs and feet, the fewer interventions you'll need in the future. Treat your legs the way you treat your face — regularly, mindfully, preventively.
