Why gel polish lifts after a week — and 7 mistakes you might not suspect

Gel polish doesn't lift because someone applied it badly. It lifts because the adhesion chain has its own rules — and one weak link is enough.

You leave the salon with perfectly finished nails. The gel polish is glossy, the edges are clean, the colour is deep. Then, four or five days later, you notice slight lifting near the cuticle on your thumb — and you already know how this ends.

The first thought is usually the same: something went wrong at the salon. Maybe the base was faulty, maybe the UV curing was too weak, maybe the stylist rushed. Technical mistakes on the salon's side do happen. But in the vast majority of cases, gel polish lifts for a completely different reason: because of what we do — or don't do — after leaving the salon.

This article isn't a defence of stylists or an attack on clients. It's an explanation of how gel polish adhesion actually works — because once you understand the mechanism, you can immediately see where something might have gone wrong. Often, the fix turns out to be surprisingly simple.

How gel polish adhesion works — the basics

Gel polish doesn't stick to the nail the way ordinary polish sticks to glass. It forms a chemical bond with a properly prepared nail plate — and the quality of that bond determines how many weeks the gel polish will last. To understand why the bond breaks, it helps to trace the whole chain from the start.

    Nail plate preparation

    The stylist cleans, buffs and degreases the nail surface. This is the foundation — any trace of oil, moisture or dust blocks the chemical bond before application even begins.

    Base (primer / base coat)

    The first layer bonds chemically with both the nail plate and the layers of polish that follow. It works like a bridge — which is why it must be fully cured under the lamp, without rushing.

    Colour (1–2 layers)

    Pigmented colour layers. Each one must be cured separately — applying thick coats all at once slows polymerisation deeper in the layer and can leave a soft, undercured core.

    Top coat

    Sealing and mechanical protection. The top coat is applied by "capping" the free edge of the nail from the front — this small technique keeps moisture and detergents from getting in at the edge.

    The first hours after curing

    Polymerisation is complete, but the bond with the nail plate still needs time to reach full strength. Aggressive chemicals during this window can weaken that bond — even if the gel polish looks flawless.

Where in the chain the weak link usually breaks

When every stage of application is done correctly, gel polish should hold for two to four weeks without lifting for most people. When it lifts sooner, one question is worth asking: at which of the five stages might something have failed? In most cases, the answer is: stage five — at home.

The nail plate is a dynamic structure. It isn't a piece of plastic glued onto your fingertip — it's keratin in a state of constant micro-movement, expanding and contracting with temperature, absorbing water and drying out, flexing under mechanical pressure. Gel polish, by contrast, is fairly rigid. When the plate and the polish respond to the same factors at different speeds, stress builds up at the edge — and over time, it leads to micro-lifting, which then progresses.

7 mistakes after leaving the salon that shorten gel polish life

These mistakes aren't obvious — which is why most people make them without realising they're ruining their manicure. Each one attacks a different part of the adhesion chain.

  • Washing dishes without gloves. Warm water with detergent is an especially harsh combination for gel polish. Detergents have emulsifying properties — they break down fats, but with prolonged contact, they can also seep under the edges of the gel polish and weaken its bond with the nail plate. A few minutes a day at the sink over two weeks means regularly "soaking" the edges. Latex or nitrile gloves solve the problem completely.
  • Prolonged contact with water right after the salon. The first twelve to twenty-four hours after a manicure are when the bond between gel polish and nail plate is still reaching full strength. A bath, a swim or a long shower during this window can weaken adhesion before it stabilises. Water absorbed into the nails causes slight swelling — and when they contract again, the risk of micro-cracks at the edge increases.
  • Opening cans, peeling labels and other "small" mechanical forces. A nail is a tool — and we instinctively use it as a lever, a claw and a scraper. Gel polish can handle normal daily activities, but repeated pressure focused on a single point at the edge (like opening a ring-pull can) applies force exactly where the layer is thinnest. It only takes a few such moments in a day for a micro-lift to become a reality.
  • Skipping cuticle oil or ignoring cuticle care altogether. Dry skin around the nail isn't just a cosmetic issue — dehydrated tissue in the nail fold changes its elasticity and can mechanically pull at the gel polish during movement. Regular use of cuticle oil (once or twice a day) keeps this tissue soft and reduces stress at the edge of the gel polish near the cuticle.
  • Contact with acetone and alcohol-based products. Acetone is the simplest way to remove gel polish — which means any contact with it (acetone-free removers often contain solvents too) damages the top coat and gradually works down into the layers beneath. Prolonged contact with high-alcohol products (some disinfectants, perfumes, hand sanitisers) has a similar effect. After applying a disinfectant, let it evaporate before touching your nails.
  • Biting, picking and "fixing" a lifted edge. The moment a micro-lift appears, the instinct is always the same: pick at it and peek underneath. This is the fastest way to spread the lift in a matter of seconds. Gel polish lifts in sections — pull at one corner and the next one follows. The only sensible fix is a salon visit for a professional touch-up or a full removal.
  • Skipping the "capping" of the edge during home care. Few people know that when applying the top coat, the stylist deliberately "caps" the layer over the free edge of the nail from the front — creating a kind of seal. You can reinforce this seal at home by applying oil along the edge, not just on the cuticle. The free edge is the most common starting point for lifting — and the easiest to protect.

When the technique really is to blame — how to tell the difference

Mistakes made at home are the most common cause of gel polish lifting early — but not the only one. Some situations point to a problem with application, and it helps to recognise them, so you can go back to the salon with a specific concern rather than a vague "it always lifts on me."

One pattern almost always points to an aftercare issue: gel polish lifts on the dominant hand's thumb within a few days, while the other nails hold up well for three weeks. The thumb on your dominant hand takes on a disproportionate amount of mechanical stress — and it's the first nail to "tell you" what your hands have been doing.

Nail plate type and condition — factors you can influence

Gel polish adhesion depends not only on application technique and aftercare, but also on the condition and structure of the nail plate itself. This isn't a fixed sentence — nail condition can genuinely be improved, and it's worth understanding why.

  • Thin, flexible nails bend and flex more readily under pressure — while gel polish stays rigid. The greater the difference in flexibility between the plate and the polish, the more stress builds up at the edge, and the sooner lifting occurs. Choosing a gel system suited to thinner nails often helps here.
  • Oily or naturally waxy nails mean a plate that takes to the base less readily — oil blocks the chemical bond even after degreasing. This nail type often needs an extra primer or a specialist base, and degreasing several times before application makes a clear difference.
  • Overly hydrated or soaked nails before a manicure (a long bath before your appointment, for example) swell — then contract as they dry, and can "pull away" a fresh base before it has fully bonded. It's best to arrive at the salon with dry nails.
  • Deficiencies in keratin, biotin and zinc can affect the structure and thickness of the plate — thin, brittle, layering nails hold gel polish less well. Supplementation won't work overnight, but for many people, it noticeably improves things within a few months.

When to opt for a touch-up, and when for a full replacement — and why it matters

Once gel polish starts lifting, the question arises: go back to the salon for a touch-up, or wait for a full replacement? And another: can you remove it yourself at home? The answers to both matter more than you'd think.

A touch-up makes sense when lifting affects one or two nails, the rest are holding up well, and the lifted section hasn't spread deeper. The stylist removes the lifted section, re-prepares that area and applies a fresh layer. It's not a lasting fix for recurring problems, but it extends the life of the manicure without a full replacement.

Removing gel polish yourself by picking and peeling is the fastest way to damage the nail plate. Gel polish catches on the keratin layer and pulls it away with it — the result is white patches, pitting and layering nails that hold up worse in any future manicure for a long time afterwards. Proper removal involves soaking in acetone under foil — and even then, it's worth trusting the salon if you're unsure.

Instead of waiting for gel polish to lift on its own, regular touch-ups at the right interval keep the manicure looking its best without a "reset" from scratch.
