"I don't have time" — you do. We'll prove it.
The average Pole spends 11 minutes in the bathroom each morning (GUS, Time Use Survey 2024). Of that, 4–5 minutes go on brushing teeth and washing, 3–4 minutes on showering, and the rest is... standing and staring in the mirror. Or scrolling Instagram on the toilet. No judgement. We're simply stating a fact: those 4 minutes exist. You just need to redirect them.
So why bother?
Because men's skin in winter is a battlefield. Frost outside, radiators inside, wind, dry air — all of it wears down the skin's lipid barrier. The result? Tightness, cracking, redness — sandpaper instead of a face. And no, that's not just "normal for winter". It's skin crying out for help — and you're ignoring it because "men don't moisturise".
Data from British Journal of Dermatology (2025) leave no doubt: men who use an SPF moisturiser in winter show 47% fewer micro-injuries to the epidermis after the heating season than those who do nothing. Forty-seven per cent. For 4 minutes a day.
Convinced? Let's get started.
Minute 1: Cleanse with a face wash (NOT soap!)
What you do: Apply a small amount of face wash to wet skin. Massage for 20 seconds. Rinse off.
Why not soap? Regular soap has a pH of 9–10. Your skin has a pH of 4.5–5.5. Soap breaks down the lipid barrier like a battering ram — stripping away not just dirt but the skin's natural protective film. The result: skin feels "clean" for 10 minutes, then produces double the sebum to protect itself. The paradox: soap makes your skin MORE oily and MORE dry at the same time.
A face wash with a pH of 5–5.5 cleanses without demolishing anything. Gentle surfactants (look for coco-glucoside, sodium cocoyl isethionate) remove excess sebum, sweat and dirt — leaving the barrier undisturbed.
Recommended: CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, La Roche-Posay Toleriane, Bioderma Sébium Gel. All available at the pharmacy for next to nothing.
Minute 2: Moisturiser with SPF (2-in-1 — one product, done)
What you do: Apply a moisturiser with SPF 30 or higher to dry skin. Spread it evenly. Done.
Why 2-in-1? Because we know how men think. Fewer steps mean a better chance you'll actually do it every day. One product, two effects: hydration + UV protection. Yes, in winter too.
"But there's no sun in winter?" Let's leave mythology to the Greeks. UVA rays — responsible for photoageing (wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity) — pass through clouds, car windows and office glass. They're present 365 days a year, from dawn to dusk. A study in Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2024) found that drivers have 28% more wrinkles on the left side of the face (the window side) than on the right — even among those who "never sunbathe".
SPF in winter isn't paranoia. It's logic.
Recommended: Eucerin Oil Control SPF 50+ (lightweight, no shine), La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Mune SPF 50+ (the best UVA protection on the market), Nivea Men Sensitive SPF 15 (the bare minimum, but better than nothing).
Minute 3: Aftershave balm (if you shave — if not, keep reading)
What you do: After shaving, apply a repairing balm. Not an alcohol-based aftershave. A BALM.
Why not aftershave? Because a classic alcohol-based aftershave is a relic of the 1980s. Here's what it does: disinfects (good), dries out (bad), irritates (very bad), and delivers a stinging sensation your dad considered "manly" (catastrophically bad). Denatured alcohol on freshly shaved skin is like salt in a wound — literally.
An aftershave balm with allantoin, panthenol and bisabolol does this instead: soothing, repair, hydration, barrier rebuilding. Zero stinging. Zero dryness. Skin smooth and calm instead of red and irritated.
And if you don't shave? If you have a beard, swap this step for beard oil. A few drops, massage in, 30 seconds. A soft beard, hydrated skin underneath, and no more flaking or itching.
Recommended: Balm — La Roche-Posay Postshave, Bulldog Sensitive After Shave Balm. Beard oil — Proraso, Bulldog Original Beard Oil.
Minute 4: Hand cream (because the frost doesn't let up)
What you do: Squeeze a small amount of cream onto your hands, rub it in, and head out the door.
Why hands? Because hands are the only part of the body exposed to frost with no protection — you don't wear gloves 24/7. Skin on the hands is thinner than on the face, has fewer sebaceous glands, dries out first and heals slowest.
Cracked, red, rough hands aren't "toughness". They're neglect that hurts (literally — cracked skin around the nails can bleed) and looks unprofessional.
One application in the morning plus one in the evening equals hands that don't look like a topographic map of the Sahara.
Recommended: Neutrogena Norwegian Formula (a classic, effective for years), CeraVe Reparative Hand Cream, O'Keeffe's Working Hands (for extremely dry hands).
Summary: 4 products, 4 minutes, 4 changes after a month
Do this every day for 30 days and you'll see:
- Less dryness — no more tightness, cracking or "paper-like" texture. The lipid barrier rebuilds.
- Less irritation — shaving stops being an act of aggression. Skin calms down.
- UV protection — invisible, but working. In 10 years, you'll thank yourself in the mirror.
- Better texture — skin smooth, even, no dry patches. You look healthier. You feel better.
Budget
- Product — Price — Lasts for
PLN 120 for two months. Less than one restaurant meal. Less than two weeks of Starbucks coffee runs. And the result? On your face. Every day.
FAQ for sceptics
"But my skin is like sandpaper — 4 minutes won't be enough"
They're enough day to day. But add one thing once a week: niacinamide serum (vitamin B3). Niacinamide is the king of active ingredients for men's skin — it strengthens the barrier, regulates sebum production, reduces redness and evens out skin tone. Apply it in the evening, before your night moisturiser (or just on clean skin, if a night moisturiser feels like too much). An extra 30 seconds, once a week.
"My girlfriend / wife has 15 products — why do I only get 4?"
Because you need 4. She could probably cut down to 6–8 too, but that's her choice. Skincare isn't a competition over how many jars you own. It's optimisation: minimum input, maximum result. Like a well-designed workout — it's not about spending 3 hours at the gym. It's about doing 45 minutes that actually deliver results.
"What if I'm going somewhere important?"
A business meeting, a wedding, a date, a presentation? Add one thing: a salon treatment once a quarter. I'm not talking about "spa rituals with rose petals". I mean a specific treatment that does what your home routine can't:
- Manual extraction — deep removal of blackheads, smoothing, a skin "reset"
- Chemical peel — even skin tone, reduced acne scars, refreshed skin
- HydraFacial — cleansing + hydration + a "glow" effect in one treatment, zero downtime, you walk out looking like you've just come back from a week's holiday
Once every 3 months. 45–60 minutes. Then back to your 4-minute daily routine. Simple.
Don't fall for "for men" marketing
One last note: be wary of products labelled "FOR MEN" with neon graphics, a petrol-station scent and promises of "extreme hydration". Often it's exactly the same product as the women's version — different packaging, higher price. Skin doesn't have a gender. It has a pH, a lipid barrier and needs.
Buy based on ingredients, not packaging. A gel with a pH of 5.5 works the same whether it comes in a tube covered in flowers or a pirate skull.
