Bruxism treatment for women

Your face carries tension you can't see — until your masseters say "enough"

Pain relief is usually accompanied by a welcome aesthetic effect: the lower face becomes noticeably slimmer, the jawline softens, and the contour takes on a more "heart-shaped" appearance. For many patients, that's two benefits in one — this is classic bruxism in women, where slimming is often an equally important, or sometimes the main, reason for the visit.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Morning headaches or jaw pain — a classic sign of nighttime clenching.
  • Pain and clicking in the temporomandibular joint, neck tension.
  • Tooth wear confirmed by a dentist, cracked fillings, sensitivity.
  • Visible masseter hypertrophy and a "square", heavy lower face.
  • A relaxation splint on its own isn't giving enough relief — a splint protects the teeth but doesn't reduce muscle strength.
  • Wanting a subtle jaw slimming and a softer contour (an aesthetic goal, most often for women).

The areas we work on

  1. no more morning headaches and jaw tension;
  2. a slimmer lower face and a softer jawline;
  3. a more "heart-shaped", feminine contour;
  4. protection of the teeth from further wear.

Your face carries tension you can't see — until your masseters say "enough"

Women clench their jaws differently from men — not only from stress, but also during concentration, physical effort, and even sleep. The female masseter is anatomically smaller, but neuromuscular reactivity remains high — which is why the effects of bruxism in women can be more far-reaching: morning headaches radiating to the temple, neck tension, and, over time, a characteristic "hardening" of the jawline contour.
The aesthetic effect of an enlarged masseter is subtle but noticeable: the lower face looks heavier, the contour becomes slightly square, and the jawline loses its softness. Botulinum toxin, injected precisely by an aesthetic medicine doctor, works on two levels at once — therapeutic and aesthetic — so you don't have to choose between relief and appearance.

What this means for your face — anatomy, the female version

In women, the masseter muscles are naturally slimmer than in men, but susceptibility to hypertrophy from bruxism is comparable. Prolonged, unconscious clenching leads to muscle hypertrophy — and it's this hypertrophy that changes facial proportions. The good news: the female masseter tends to respond to botulinum toxin faster and more clearly than the male one. The dose is chosen individually for your anatomy, muscle strength and aesthetic goal — precision, not a standard formula.
A slimmer jawline appears gradually between weeks 4 and 6 after treatment, and builds with regular sessions. For many women, this is a subtle yet meaningful shift in proportion — a softer, more oval facial contour, with no change to your features.

A hormonal context you can't ignore

Bruxism in women often intensifies at certain points in the hormonal cycle — with PMS, around ovulation, and particularly during perimenopause and menopause. Fluctuating oestrogen levels affect muscle tension and sleep quality, which directly influences how intensely you grind your teeth at night. If you notice your headaches or jaw tension flaring up cyclically, that's not a coincidence.
It's worth discussing this pattern with your doctor during the consultation. Carefully timed Botox sessions can take your hormonal rhythm into account, bringing relief exactly when you need it most.

A tiredness in the face you can't see, but you can feel

Most women with bruxism describe the same feeling: waking up tired despite sleeping. A stiff jaw, tense temples, an aching neck — as if the night wasn't restful at all. On top of this comes a subtle but constant daytime pressure: clenching while concentrating, work stress, emotions that need somewhere to go. The masseters become a storage site for tension.
Botulinum toxin breaks this cycle — not by chemically putting the muscle to sleep, but by reducing the strength of its contraction to a level that stops causing damage. The result: deeper sleep, less pain, a less tense face — and the subtle but real difference you notice in the mirror a few weeks after treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply makeup the same day as the treatment?
Yes — you can apply makeup right after the treatment, with no restrictions. The only advice is to avoid massaging your cheeks for the first 4–6 hours. Your skin doesn't need any special preparation or a break from your usual skincare routine.
Can I combine masseter Botox with retinol or acids at home?
Yes — home care such as retinol, AHA/BHA acids or vitamin C has no effect on how botulinum toxin works in the masseter. These are two completely independent areas of action. Continue your routine as usual.
How long do I need to wait after giving birth or finishing breastfeeding?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are absolute contraindications for this treatment. Once you've finished breastfeeding, we recommend waiting at least 4 weeks before booking a consultation. At your medical visit, we'll discuss your current health and choose the right time together.
Will the jaw-slimming effect be visible to other people, or only to me?
The effect is subtle and builds gradually — most people around you won't be able to pinpoint a specific change, but they'll notice that you look rested and refreshed. The facial contour shifts gently between weeks 4 and 6. The difference in "before and after" photos is real, but there's no dramatic reshaping — and that's not the aim.
Can I combine bruxism treatment with other aesthetic medicine treatments, for example Botox in the forehead?
Yes — this is one of the most common combinations. Your doctor can plan both areas in a single session, which is convenient and helps you keep future appointments in sync. The masseter treatment and the forehead are separate anatomical areas that don't interact with each other.
