Bruxism treatment for men

A jaw that never rests — why men with bruxism wait too long

Here, masseters tend to be stronger and more developed, so the dose needed for results is usually higher. The main focus is the therapeutic goal — reducing pain and protecting the teeth — while any slimming effect is discreet. This matters because bruxism in men is often underestimated, yet it can damage teeth, disrupt sleep and cause chronic headaches for years.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Morning headaches or jaw pain — a classic sign of nighttime clenching.
  • Pain and clicking in the temporomandibular joint, neck tension.
  • Tooth wear confirmed by a dentist, cracked fillings, sensitivity.
  • Visible masseter hypertrophy and a "square", heavy lower face.
  • A relaxation splint on its own isn't giving enough relief — a splint protects the teeth but doesn't reduce muscle strength.
  • Wanting a subtle jaw slimming and a softer contour (an aesthetic goal, most often for women).

The areas we work on

  1. reducing tension headaches and jaw pain;
  2. protecting worn, cracking teeth;
  3. calmer sleep (less nighttime grinding);
  4. discreet slimming as a side effect rather than the goal.

A jaw that never rests — why men with bruxism wait too long

Men are more prone to severe forms of bruxism than women — and at the same time less likely to treat it. The reason? Strong masseter muscles "hide" the problem for a long time. Headaches are attributed to stress, neck tension — to the gym, and teeth grinding is discovered by chance at the dentist's. Meanwhile, bruxism in men with an intense lifestyle is a mechanical phenomenon: the masseter muscle — one of the strongest in the body — works at night with a force several times greater than that of conscious chewing.
The effect accumulates over the years: enamel wears away millimetre by millimetre, fillings crack, implants are overloaded, temporomandibular joints wear down. Botulinum toxin does not "switch off" the muscle — it reduces the force of its contraction to a level at which it stops causing damage. Treating the cause, not masking it.

Anatomy working against you

Men's masseter muscles are on average 30–40% more massive than women's — this is an anatomical fact, not a matter of fitness. With bruxism, this hypertrophy progresses: the more the muscle works, the more it grows. Hence the characteristic squareness of the lower face, which in men is sometimes perceived as a natural feature of their build — whereas it is a symptom of long-term overload.
The dose of botulinum toxin is chosen individually, based on muscle mass, symptom severity and the desired result — precision suited to your anatomy, not an average. The therapeutic effect appears after 7–14 days; the aesthetic jaw-slimming effect appears gradually, between weeks 4 and 8.

No downtime, no visible marks

For men, this is often the deciding factor: zero downtime means zero adjustments to your schedule. The treatment takes 20–30 minutes, after which you go straight back to work, training and meetings — with no bruising, swelling or visible marks. For the first 4–6 hours, avoid massaging your cheek and jaw area. That's the only restriction.
If you shave every day, you can shave normally the very next day. If you train, resume activity after 24 hours (intense exercise and saunas speed up circulation and can affect how the toxin distributes in the early phase). Otherwise, your schedule stays exactly as it is.

Stress, sleep, the gym — how bruxism fits into your lifestyle

Men with an intense lifestyle — work stress, heavy training, insufficient sleep — are in the highest-risk group for worsening bruxism. Cortisol raises baseline muscle tension, which translates into stronger clenching at night. Weightlifting on its own doesn't cause bruxism, but it does contribute to a general increase in muscle tension — including in the masseters.
Regular bruxism treatment sessions every 4–6 months aren't a one-off intervention — they're part of prevention. With consistent treatment, the severity of bruxism tends to decrease, and later sessions can be spaced further apart, with the dose adjusted to the current state of the muscle. Dentists and orthodontists increasingly refer patients to this treatment actively — as a complement to, or an alternative for, an occlusal splint.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shave the day after the treatment?
Yes — you can resume shaving normally the next day. The only advice for the first 4–6 hours is to avoid massaging the cheek and jaw area. Shaving with a razor or an electric shaver doesn't affect how the toxin works — the injection site is deep in the muscle, not the skin.
When can I get back to the gym after the treatment?
You can train normally after 24 hours. During this time, avoid intense physical exertion and saunas — increased blood pressure and temperature can affect the toxin's early distribution. After that period, full activity with no restrictions.
Will anyone notice I've had something done to my face?
No — the effect of botulinum toxin in the masseters is gradual and subtle. Slimming of the lower face develops over several weeks and looks like a natural change in proportions, not like an aesthetic intervention. Those around you may notice that you look more rested or less tense — without being able to pinpoint a specific reason.
Do I need to tell my dentist about the treatment?
It's worth doing — especially if you wear an occlusal splint or have implants or extensive dental work. Your dentist may adjust the splint to account for the reduced clenching force, or assess whether the splint is still needed at all. Toxin treatment for bruxism and dental care complement each other.
Can I combine bruxism treatment with other treatments, such as hyaluronic acid?
Yes — masseter treatment can be combined with other aesthetic medicine procedures. Popular combinations for men: Botox in the masseters + Botox for the forehead and frown lines, Botox in the masseters + hyaluronic acid for the nasolabial folds. The doctor will plan the order and a safe interval between areas within a single session.
