Beach hair — how to protect your hair from sun, salt and chlorine

You can have a great holiday and beautiful hair at the same time — but first you need to know what you're up against.

6 min readwritten for women

You come back from the beach. Your hair smells of salt and looks like it belongs in an editorial shoot — beautifully tousled, with a natural wave. The problem is that this "beach look" marks the start of damage you'll see in three weeks. The good news? You can have a great holiday and beautiful hair at the same time — but you need to know what you're really up against.

Sun, salt, chlorine — the summer trio that causes damage

Human hair is mainly keratin — a protein built from amino acids linked by disulfide bonds. These bonds give hair its structure, elasticity and strength. And it's exactly these bonds that the summer trio attacks: UV radiation, sea salt and pool chlorine.

Protection BEFORE — what to do before you go in the water

Physical protection: turban, silk cap, hat. A silk scarf or satin turban not only shields hair from UV and wind but also avoids friction, unlike cotton. On the beach, a wide-brimmed hat protects both your hair and your face.

Repair AFTER — what to do once you're back from the beach

  • Step 1 — Micellar shampoo: Micelles surround and lift away dirt, mineral salts and residue without harsh action. Use it after every day at the beach or pool — the longer salt and chlorine sit on your hair, the more damage they cause.
  • Step 2 — Keratin mask: Hydrolysed keratin particles penetrate damaged areas of the hair shaft and fill in gaps. Leave the mask on for at least 10–15 minutes under a warm towel — heat opens the cuticle and helps active ingredients penetrate.
  • Step 3 — Leave-in serum: Apply a serum containing silk proteins or oils to damp, towel-blotted hair. It seals the cuticle and prevents moisture loss during drying.

Nanoplastia and keratin treatments — your holiday "insurance"

If you're planning an intensive holiday, a keratin treatment performed BEFORE you go away is one of the best investments you can make in your hair.

  • It blocks salt and chlorine — a smooth, sealed cuticle keeps out impurities
  • It protects against UV — an extra protein layer absorbs part of the radiation
  • It makes daily care easier — hair doesn't tangle, frizz or become static
  • Results often last several months — potentially covering the whole summer season
  • Fine, delicate hair — nanoplastia doesn't weigh it down
  • Curly hair — it doesn't straighten aggressively; many clients keep their natural curl
  • Coloured hair — it can strengthen colour and help prevent it from washing out

What NOT to do — summer myths

Your holiday protection plan — a summary

  • 2–3 weeks before you leave: A keratin treatment or nanoplastia
  • In the morning, before the beach: Coconut oil on the length + SPF mist
  • Right before going into the water: Wet your hair with fresh water
  • At the beach: Hat, turban or scarf
  • Straight after swimming: Rinse your hair with fresh water
  • In the evening: Micellar shampoo + keratin mask + serum
  • After your holiday: A repair visit at the salon
