Laser hair removal — questions and answers

Everything you wanted to know about laser hair removal — no myths, no sugar-coating.

7 min read

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetology treatments. It also raises plenty of questions and myths. Here's what we actually know — clearly and without sugar-coating.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser emits light absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle. Melanin converts it into heat, which destroys the follicle matrix responsible for hair growth. The result is a gradual reduction in regrowth.

How many sessions do you need?

As a rough guide, you'll need anywhere from a few to over a dozen sessions — depending on the body area, skin phototype, hair colour and hormonal influence. Everyone is different, so it's worth discussing an individual plan with a cosmetologist before starting the series.

  • Underarms — often 4–6 sessions
  • Bikini line — often 6–8 sessions
  • Full bikini / Brazilian — often 6–10 sessions
  • Legs (calves + thighs) — often 6–10 sessions
  • Face (upper lip, chin) — often 8–12 sessions
  • Back and chest (men) — often 6–10 sessions

How often are sessions scheduled?

Intervals between sessions depend on the area — each zone has its own hair growth cycle:

  • Face — every 4–6 weeks
  • Body — every 6–8 weeks
  • Intimate areas — every 6–8 weeks

What equipment is used for hair removal?

At J'ADORE INSTYTUT, we work with professional-grade diode devices. The gradual follicle-heating technology — rather than a single high-energy pulse — makes the treatment considerably gentler than classic high-energy laser hair removal.

  • Soprano ICE (Alma Lasers) — our main device; safe for most skin phototypes
  • Versus — a complementary diode laser
  • ZYE YAG — for very dark skin tones or tanned skin

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Clients most often describe the sensation as warmth with mild stinging — nothing like waxing. Discomfort is minimal, though it depends on a few factors:

  • Sensitive areas (intimate areas, underarms, face) may feel more noticeable
  • The first sessions can feel more intense, as more hairs are active
  • Tanned or naturally dark skin may react more strongly

How do you prepare for a session?

Preparation directly affects the treatment's results and safety.

Who might see less effective or unsuitable results from laser hair removal?

  • Light blond, red and grey hair — the lack of melanin limits the laser's effect; electrolysis is an alternative
  • Active tan — higher risk of skin irritation
  • Pregnancy — most specialists recommend caution and postponing the series
  • Active retinoid treatment (e.g. Roaccutane) — requires a break of at least a few months
  • Certain photosensitising medications (tetracyclines, some diuretics) — requires consultation

Are laser hair removal results permanent?

The correct term is "permanent hair reduction", not "permanent removal". After a full series, most hair stops regrowing for many people — any hair that does return is often finer and lighter.

  • After a few years, new hair may appear from hormone-dependent follicles
  • For many people, 1–2 maintenance sessions a year are enough to keep the results
  • Results vary between individuals — they depend on skin phototype, hair colour and hormonal profile
