Post-summer hyperpigmentation — why it appears only NOW

What you see today started weeks ago — which is exactly why now is the time to act.

7 min readwritten for women

Hyperpigmentation that appears in late summer or early autumn isn't the result of your last few days in the sun. It's the outcome of biochemical processes set in motion weeks earlier. Understanding how melanogenesis works changes how we approach prevention and treatment.

Melanogenesis — a process that takes weeks

Most people think of tanning as an instant reaction: sun in, brown out. In reality, it's a multi-stage biochemical process that unfolds over weeks.

Here's what actually happens in your skin:

Not every patch is the same

Hyperpigmentation isn't a single condition — it's a symptom of several different processes. Telling them apart matters, because it determines the treatment.

Why SPF isn't enough

SPF is absolutely essential. But it isn't sufficient on its own. Here's why:

The repair plan — what to do this autumn

Summer is for protection. Autumn is for repair. This is where clinical heavy artillery comes in.

Prevention: what you do NOW determines September

Since melanogenesis unfolds over weeks, prevention started now pays off in a month or two.

  • Avoiding exposure — stay out of the sun during peak hours (11am–4pm). Brutal, but the most effective step.
  • Physical barrier — a hat with a brim of at least 7 cm, sunglasses, clothing with UPF protection.
  • Mineral filter with iron oxide — SPF 50+, applied in the right amount, reapplied every 2 hours.
  • Antioxidants — a vitamin C serum in the morning, under SPF.
  • Avoiding additional triggers — hot baths, saunas straight after sun exposure.

Your autumn plan starts now

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common concerns brought to J'ADORE salons from September through December. The best results often go to clients who book a consultation before the season of intense exposure — because it means starting prevention early and preparing the skin for possible autumn treatment.

At J'ADORE INSTYTUT, we offer a full range of options: from chemical peels and the Cosmelan protocol to laser therapy, alongside personalised home-care plans built around retinoids and arbutin. Every plan starts with a consultation — because the type of hyperpigmentation determines the strategy.
