Pyruvic — pyruvic acid for men

For men, a pyruvic peel for men is most often suited to oily skin, with larger sebaceous glands, wider pores and blackheads, as well as acne scars — flat and indented marks after years of acne. Men rarely have an SPF habit, so sun-induced and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are often an additional concern. A pyruvic peel regulates sebum, unclogs pores and has an antibacterial effect. Through biostimulation, it also works on scars and texture — addressing exactly what acne tends to leave behind for men.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Acne vulgaris — comedonal acne (clogged pores, “blackheads”) and mild to moderate papulopustular acne; it unclogs pores and limits new breakouts.
  • Acne scars — especially shallow, “soft” scars and uneven texture; pyruvic acid improves their appearance through biostimulation (deep “pitted” scars require fractional mesotherapy or laser treatment).
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark marks left after blemishes have healed.
  • Oily and seborrhoeic skin — excessive shine, a “shiny” T-zone and a tendency towards comedones.
  • Enlarged pores — especially on the nose, forehead and chin; after completing the series, skin looks smoother and more mattified.
  • Uneven skin tone and “grey”, tired-looking skin — when you want brighter, fresher skin and improved skin quality.

Skin that has been last on the list for years

Most men with acne come to the salon with a specific concern: scars left after several or even a dozen years of acne. It is not so much active breakouts — although these can occur too. It is the characteristic picture: enlarged pores, especially on the nose and chin, skin that becomes shiny before midday, and flat or indented marks, mainly on the cheeks and jawline. Often, there is also the back, which has had its own history of acne and still carries the marks.
A pyruvic peel addresses this specific set of concerns in two ways. It regulates sebum and has an antibacterial effect, limiting new breakouts and blackheads. At the same time, biostimulation of fibroblasts gradually improves the appearance of shallow scars and evens out texture. This is not a one-off treatment. A series combined with consistent aftercare is what delivers real results for marks.

The anatomy of men’s skin — why it matters

Men’s skin is on average 20-25% thicker than women’s skin. It has larger sebaceous glands and produces more sebum — hence a greater tendency towards clogged pores and recurring breakouts. Shaving, whether with a razor or shaver, regularly disrupts the skin barrier and causes micro-injuries. With acne-prone skin, this may intensify inflammation.
A pyruvic peel takes these characteristics into account. It penetrates sebum because it is lipophilic, unclogs pores and regulates sebum production at gland level. During consultation, the cosmetologist will ask about your shaving routine and how your skin looks afterwards. This affects the strength selected for your first treatment.

SPF — a condition for results, not a suggestion

Men are less likely to use sunscreen daily. With a series of pyruvic peels, one of the main goals is reducing post-acne hyperpigmentation and improving scars. Skipping SPF after treatment undoes part of the results. Skin exposed to UV after a peel produces melanin more intensely. This can set or deepen dark marks instead of lightening them.
The cosmetologist will recommend SPF 50+ every day for at least several weeks after each treatment. This is not optional — without it, a pyruvic peel loses half of its effectiveness on hyperpigmentation.

What you can realistically expect from a series

Deep, indented scars, known as acne pits, require fractional mesotherapy or laser treatment — a peel alone will not level them, but it may improve the overall skin quality around them.

Frequently asked questions

Will it be obvious that I have had something done after the peel — can I return to work?
Usually, yes — a pyruvic peel does not require time away from daily activities. Your skin may be red for a few hours after the treatment. It may also peel slightly over the following few days. The peeling is subtle and looks like dry skin — not like skin coming off. Work, meetings and training are usually possible the next day, with one condition: avoid saunas and swimming pools for several days.
I shave with a razor. Can I do this after the treatment?
It is best to wait 2-3 days after the treatment before shaving with a razor again. Your skin is more sensitive then, and the blade may irritate the freshly exfoliated barrier. An electric shaver is gentler and safer immediately afterwards. Tell us about your shaving method during consultation — it is important when selecting the peel strength.
I have had acne scars since secondary school. Can a peel still do anything after so many years?
It depends on the type of scars. Flat, dark hyperpigmentation and small, soft scars can improve with a series of pyruvic peels — they fade and become more even. Deep, indented pits, known as atrophic scars, will not be fully levelled by a peel. Fractional mesotherapy (Dermapen) or laser treatment is more effective then, often combined with a peel. We establish your scar treatment plan during consultation after assessing their type and depth.
I train intensely — when can I return to the gym after the treatment?
Avoid intense exercise and sweating for 1-2 days after the treatment. Sweat irritates freshly exfoliated skin and may intensify redness. With acne-prone skin, it can also encourage new breakouts. After this time, you can return without restrictions. After training, wash your face with a gentle gel, not harsh soap, to avoid disrupting the barrier during recovery.
I have breakouts on my back — does a pyruvic peel work there too?
Yes — acne and post-acne marks on the back are among the indications for a pyruvic peel. The skin on the back is thicker, so series are usually slightly longer and peeling more noticeable. The challenge is aftercare: SPF on the back, especially when wearing a sleeveless top in summer, and a moisturising serum. You may need help from someone at home.
