Beard reconstruction for men

Your skin, your rules — why a beard makes all the difference

This is an entirely male treatment — and that's exactly how we approach it. The goal: dense, natural, masculine facial hair without a "painted-on" look. Strokes follow precisely the direction of your own hair growth, colour is matched to your beard shade and skin tone, and density is matched to how much of your own hair is present in each area. Thicker beard skin holds pigment well, making this one of the most durable results in PMU.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Genetic gaps in facial hair — smooth "windows" on the cheeks, under the lip or along the jawline that break up an even beard line.
  • Alopecia barbae — isolated, round patches of hair loss within the beard (once the condition has stabilised).
  • Scars — from accidents, surgery, burns or severe acne, in areas the beard no longer covers.
  • Thin, patchy facial hair — when the beard grows unevenly and won't fill in on its own.
  • Asymmetry in the beard line — evening out and visually completing the contour of the beard.
  • A permanently "freshly grown-in" look — for men who want a defined, masculine beard line without daily filling in.

The areas we work on

  1. filling gaps in the beard — genetic ones and those left by alopecia barbae;
  2. camouflaging scars from injury or acne within the beard area;
  3. closing and evening out the beard line, correcting asymmetry;
  4. once healed, you shave normally — the pigment remains as a shadow in the skin;
  5. related to SMP (scalp micropigmentation) — often combined for the same man.

Your skin, your rules — why a beard makes all the difference

A beard hasn't been a hipster fashion statement for years — it's an expression of style that either works, or gives away that something's off. Genetic gaps, a scar from an accident, a round patch left by alopecia barbae — each of these stands out exactly where you want an even, full beard. Beard reconstruction is a technical answer to a specific anatomical problem — and that's exactly why it works so well.

Why beard skin is a different league from eyebrow PMU in women

Male facial skin is thicker, oilier and mechanically worn down (shaving, trimming, touching). The very factor that shortens the lifespan of lip PMU in women works to your advantage here — thick beard skin holds pigment better and longer than almost anything else in PMU. Beard reconstruction is one of the most durable micropigmentation techniques there is.
Strokes are drawn precisely in the direction your own hair grows — not at the angle that "looks nice on a template", but at the angle dictated by the real anatomy of your beard. Colour is matched to your facial hair shade and skin tone so it doesn't shift over time into a cold, grey or greenish tone — the most common mistake made at poor-quality salons.

What you can actually achieve — no exaggeration

Here's what you can expect from beard reconstruction:
Here's what you can't expect: real, growing hair. Pigment doesn't stimulate follicles — it works visually. If you're dreaming of a long, dense beard of living hair, that's a job for a transplant (FUE). If your facial hair is weak but alive, strengthening the follicles comes first — PMU finishes off the rest.
  • a smooth scar from an accident, surgery or severe acne stops being visible under the beard — the pigment blends with the surrounding skin
  • round alopecia barbae patches (once the condition has stabilised) filled in with strokes that read as facial hair from a distance
  • genetic "windows" on the cheeks, under the lip or along the jawline closed so the beard line looks even
  • a freshly grown-in look in areas where your own hair is too sparse to close the beard
  • a consistent, symmetrical beard line — without the asymmetry you've been seeing in the mirror for years

How this looks for men in different situations

Every man starts from a different point — and this determines the scope of the treatment, not the timeline or package:
  • Dense facial hair with individual gaps — we focus on precisely filling those specific areas, matching stroke density to the surrounding hair so the gap disappears
  • Scar from an accident or surgery — we pigment the smooth tissue so it blends visually with the beard; colour and direction matter here, since smooth skin takes pigment differently to skin with follicles
  • Alopecia barbae — round, smooth patches; we work once the condition has stabilised, since pigment can be lost along with the epidermis during an active flare
  • Overall thinning — more work involved, but the result is proportionally more significant; often combined with SMP if both the beard and scalp hair share the same issue

One detail that changes everything: stroke technique vs flat shading

Most of the poor beard reconstruction results you see online are the result of flat shading — a solid, overly dark patch instead of individual hairs. With good hair-stroke technique, up close you see separate strokes following the growth direction; from a distance, it reads as a dense, natural beard. That's why you have every right to ask for a portfolio of healed results — not just fresh photos taken right after treatment, since fresh results always look dark and intense, while healed ones show the true effect.

Beard PMU and scalp SMP — the same family, one consistent look

If thinning hair is an issue for you both on the scalp and in the beard, it's worth considering both treatments together. Beard reconstruction and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) belong to the same family — fine strokes and dots of pigment imitating hair. The linergist working on your beard can plan the SMP so tone and density stay consistent. The result: everything works together from forehead to jawline.

Frequently asked questions

Will anyone be able to tell I've had something done?
With the stroke technique and a colour matched to your skin tone — practically not. Up close, these are individual hairs, not a solid patch. Women who know what to look for might notice that the beard is unusually even; men rarely do. The poor results you've seen online are mostly down to flat shading and the wrong pigment shade — exactly what we avoid here.
Can I go back to work the next day after the treatment?
Yes — there are no bandages or visible signs of the procedure. In the first few days, the skin is slightly red and the colour looks more intense than the final result. You return to work and daily life straight away; the only things to skip are heavy-sweat workouts, the pool and shaving the area until it heals.
I have a scar from an accident years ago — is it too late now?
No — a mature, stable scar is actually a good starting point. It takes pigment less readily than healthy skin, so the treatment plan is slightly different, but the result is achievable. A linergist will assess how your specific scar tissue behaves during consultation.
I have alopecia barbae — do I have to wait for it to clear up on its own?
You don't have to wait forever, but you do need to wait for stabilisation — active alopecia, where patches keep changing or growing, isn't the right moment. Once the condition has been stable for a few months, we can pigment the area. A linergist will confirm this during consultation.
How many sessions does this actually take?
Typically 1–2 sessions plus a mandatory touch-up after around 4–6 weeks — the touch-up isn't fixing a mistake, it's part of the process. Skin in different parts of the beard takes pigment differently; the touch-up finishes off colour and density wherever it has faded after healing. Only then do you assess the final result.
