Thread vein removal — Nd:YAG / DYE-VL for women

Women's skin and thread veins — the details make the difference

For women, the most common goal is evening out facial and décolletage skin tone and removing thread veins that "show through" make-up. Skin can be thinner and more reactive, so parameters are selected carefully, and the décolletage and eye area are treated with particular care. This is classic thread vein removal for women.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Facial telangiectasia — widened, visible small vessels on the cheeks, around the nose, and on the chin.
  • Redness and rosacea — persistent facial redness that no skincare or make-up can hide.
  • Thread veins on the legs — webs of widened vessels on the thighs and calves, especially bothersome in summer.
  • Cherry angiomas ("ruby spots") — small, red vascular dots or bumps on the body.
  • Widened vessels on the décolletage — common after the age of 35, on sensitive skin.
  • Persistent redness after acne — inflammatory vascular marks that don't fade on their own.
  • Vascular discolouration from sun or irritation — for example after years of UV exposure without protection.

The areas we work on

  1. thread veins and diffuse redness on the cheeks and around the nose;
  2. redness and thread veins related to rosacea;
  3. widened vessels on the décolletage — a sensitive area, treated with careful parameters;
  4. cherry angiomas and small vascular lesions on the body;
  5. thread veins on the legs (thighs, calves) — a common "before summer" concern.

Women's skin and thread veins — the details make the difference

Women's skin is structurally thinner than men's — the vessels sit closer to the surface and are more prone to widening under hormonal fluctuations, temperature changes and chronic stress. Redness on the cheeks often appears around the menstrual cycle, and worsens during pregnancy and after menopause. Telangiectasia around the nose and chin is also often hereditary — if your mother had thread veins, there's a good chance you will too.
Rosacea presents differently in women than in men: it less often causes enlargement of the sebaceous glands, and more often shows as subtle, diffuse redness across the centre of the face — the kind that make-up will even out for an hour, but won't solve. The laser reaches where concealer can't.

Décolletage and neck — telltale zones

Thread veins on the décolletage and neck develop over years, often unnoticed. The thin skin in this area copes less well with UV exposure and heat irritation from hot baths or saunas. After the age of 35, visible thread veins on the décolletage become one of the most common concerns raised at consultation.
DYE-VL, with correctly selected parameters, is safe for this sensitive zone — the specialist adjusts the pulse energy to the thinner skin of the décolletage, keeping full precision without compromising on results.

Aftercare — retinol and acids need to wait

If you use active skincare — retinol, AHA/BHA acids, high-strength vitamin C — you need to pause these for at least 7 days before the treatment and resume gradually 5–7 days after the session. This isn't a limitation for its own sake, but a safety requirement: active skin absorbs laser energy differently, which can increase the risk of irritation.
For 2–4 weeks after the treatment, SPF 50+ is mandatory — during this period, sun protection matters more than the rest of your skincare routine combined.

A natural look — the "no effect" effect

The most common worry: "I'll look like I've had a treatment done." In fact, the goal of thread vein treatment is the opposite — after the series, your skin simply looks like skin, without thread veins, without persistent redness, without needing a layer of concealer to even out your tone. The result is lasting, not temporary like make-up.
The purpura that can appear after a DYE-VL treatment isn't a sign of damage — it's a visible sign that the vessel has been successfully coagulated. It fades within 5–10 days and can be covered with light make-up from the day after the treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have this treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
No — pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications for laser thread vein removal. You can safely book the treatment once breastfeeding has ended. It's worth knowing that pregnancy often worsens thread veins because of hormonal fluctuations and increased blood pressure — which is why many women come in for treatment after giving birth and finishing breastfeeding.
Can I wear make-up after the treatment?
Yes — from the next day. For the first 24 hours, we recommend keeping things simple: gentle cleansing, no foundation or powder on the treated areas. If purpura appears after DYE-VL, you can cover it with a light concealer and mineral foundation — without rubbing or scrubbing the skin.
Do I need to stop using retinol before the treatment?
Yes — at least 7 days before the session. Retinoids increase skin's photosensitivity and can affect how it absorbs laser energy. After the treatment, reintroduce retinol gradually after 5–7 days, starting with less frequent applications than usual.
I inherited my thread veins from my mother — is the treatment even worth it if they'll come back?
A closed vessel doesn't come back — that's simply physiology. New thread veins can appear, because the genetic predisposition doesn't go away, but the scale of the problem decreases with each series. Many women have a top-up session once a year or two and maintain the result for years. This doesn't treat the underlying cause, but it manages the symptoms very effectively.
Can thread vein removal be combined with other laser treatments?
Yes, provided there's an appropriate gap between sessions and the specialist assesses your skin. We often combine a thread vein series with photorejuvenation or laser pigmentation correction — all performed on the same Alma Harmony XL platform, which lets us address both skin tone and skin structure comprehensively within one series.
