Thread veins on the nose and cheeks appear in many men after the age of 30, and with rosacea the redness can become persistent. When it's worth it — indications

  • Facial telangiectasia — widened, visible small vessels on the cheeks, around the nose, and on the chin.
  • Redness and rosacea — persistent facial redness that no skincare or make-up can hide.

Men's skin — thicker, but more exposed

Men's skin is on average 25% thicker than women's, contains more sebaceous glands, and is mechanically stressed daily — shaving, razor friction, contact with foam and aftershave. This isn't protection — it's a risk factor: micro-injuries and inflammation from shaving, years of UV exposure without protection, and sudden temperature changes (sauna, cold weather, a hot shower after training) all contribute to widening of facial blood vessels.
In men, thread veins most often appear on the nose, cheeks and chin. A beard can mask the problem for years — and when a man shaves it off or trims it shorter, the thread veins turn out to be extensive. The laser adjusts its parameters to the thickness and structure of the skin — the dose and energy are matched precisely to anatomy and goal, not to gender.

Shaving and thread veins — the mechanics of the problem

Daily shaving is one of the main mechanical irritants for facial vessels. The razor passes just a few millimetres from the surface of the capillaries — for skin prone to vascular issues, every shave can make the problem worse. The chin and jawline are particularly prone to telangiectasia for this very reason.
After a laser treatment, shaving in the treated area is put off for 48–72 hours — that's enough time for the skin to settle. After that, you can shave as normal, and the results last regardless of your ongoing routine.

Rosacea in men — redness that looks like something else

Rosacea in men is often mistaken for oily, reactive skin, or dismissed as a "drinker's face". Persistent redness on the cheeks and nose, worsening after alcohol, exercise, hot food or temperature changes — this is the classic picture of rosacea. In men, the condition can involve enlargement of the sebaceous glands (rhinophyma — thickening of the nose), which is why the earlier you start vascular treatment, the better you can control how it progresses.
The laser reduces redness and closes visible vessels — the result is noticeable and lasting. It doesn't eliminate rosacea as a condition, but it helps keep your skin looking like it doesn't need daily concealing.

Discreet, with zero downtime

Thread veins are one of those aesthetic concerns men most often put off, simply because they don't realise they can be effectively removed without surgery and without a week of recovery. The treatment takes 30–45 minutes, mild redness fades within a few hours, and you're back to work or training the next day.
If purpura appears after DYE-VL — it lasts 5–10 days and looks like faint bruising. You can cover it with concealer if that matters to you, or simply wait it out — it fades on its own and shows that the vessel has been successfully coagulated.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go straight to the gym after the treatment?
Intense exercise isn't recommended for the first 48 hours — a rise in body temperature and blood pressure can heighten the post-treatment reaction and prolong redness. After that, you can train without restrictions. Sauna and a hot shower after training — wait at least 48 hours after the laser session.
I shave every day — when can I go back to shaving after the treatment?
You can shave normally 48–72 hours after the treatment. During this time your skin is more sensitive — mechanical irritation from the razor can heighten the post-treatment reaction. If you need to shave sooner, avoid the treated areas and use the gentlest technique possible.
Will anyone notice I've had a treatment?
Mild redness fades within a few hours and usually looks like normal reactivity from shaving. Purpura after DYE-VL is more visible — it lasts up to 10 days and has a bluish tint. You can cover it with concealer, or plan the treatment for a time when you have a few quiet days ahead. Most men book their sessions for the end of the week.
I have a beard or short stubble — does the laser work through hair?
The laser needs to reach the skin directly — the treatment area should be shaved or have very short stubble. If you wear a beard and don't plan to shave it off, thread veins in that area can only be treated where the handpiece can reach. At consultation, the specialist will assess which lesions can be treated given your current facial hair.
Is the treatment effective on darker skin tones?
Yes, but selecting the right parameters is key. For darker skin tones, the specialist changes the handpiece and adjusts the energy settings — Nd:YAG 1064 nm is safer for phototypes IV–VI than DYE-VL. At consultation, we assess your phototype and choose the method individually to avoid the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
