Why under the eyes specifically?
The skin under your eyes is unique — and not in a good way. It's only a fraction of the thickness of the rest of your facial skin. There's practically no subcutaneous fat. It has a dense network of blood vessels just below the surface. And the orbicularis oculi muscle never stops working — you blink several thousand times a day.
This is the area that ages first and shows every internal issue on the outside. Dark circles aren't a cosmetic flaw — they're a diagnostic signal. The question is: of what?
4 types of dark circles — identify yours
Not all dark circles are the same. Dermatology distinguishes 4 separate mechanisms, and each requires a different approach. Turn on the light, stand in front of the mirror, and check.
- Made worse by: lack of sleep (vessel dilation), allergies (so-called "allergic shiners"), alcohol, genetics
- Topical: vitamin K (strengthens vessels), caffeine (constricts vessels), retinol (thickens the skin)
- In-salon: vascular laser (closes small vessels), carboxytherapy (improves microcirculation)
- Made worse by: unprotected UV exposure, rubbing and frequent eye-touching, genetics and phototype, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
- Topical: arbutin, vitamin C, azelaic acid, niacinamide
- In-salon: gentle eye-area peels, brightening mesotherapy (vitamin C, tranexamic acid)
- Made worse by: age (loss of fat tissue volume from around age 30), rapid weight loss, genetics — orbital bone structure, smoking
- Topical: practically nothing — no cream can fill an anatomical hollow
- In-salon: hyaluronic acid in the tear trough (HA filler), Profhilo (biostimulation + deep hydration), PRP (platelet-rich plasma)
Causes — let's debunk the myths
Treatment by type — a concrete plan
- In-salon: carboxytherapy (CO₂ stimulates microcirculation)
- In-salon: vascular laser (IPL or Nd:YAG — closing small vessels)
- In-salon: mesotherapy with caffeine and rutin
- In-salon: eye-area peel (gentle acids: mandelic, pyruvic)
- In-salon: brightening mesotherapy (a blend of vitamin C + tranexamic acid + glutathione)
- In-salon: pigment laser (used with great caution in this area)
- Hyaluronic acid (filler) — precise injection into the tear trough. Result: the hollow disappears, the shadow disappears. Results last for many months. One of the most rewarding treatments in aesthetic medicine.
- Profhilo — doesn't fill, but biostimulates and deeply hydrates. Improves skin quality, lifts the tissue slightly. Ideal for those who don't want a filler.
- PRP (platelet-rich plasma) — natural regeneration, improved skin tone and thickness.
"Concealer doesn't treat" — why it's worth going further
You can mask dark circles with concealer for the rest of your life. That's a valid strategy. But consider this: you have to apply concealer every day, it migrates and settles into fine lines during the day, it doesn't change what you see after washing your face, and the problem deepens with age — you'll need an ever-thicker layer.
Or you can see a specialist, get your type of dark circles diagnosed, and implement a solution that targets the cause. Filler in the tear trough can work for a year or longer. A series of mesotherapy sessions gives results lasting months. Consistent retinol use permanently changes skin structure.
Diagnostics — where to start
If you've had dark circles for years and nothing helps — before you invest in another cream, get some basic diagnostics done.
- Full blood count — rule out anaemia (haemoglobin, ferritin, iron)
- Allergy panel — inhalant allergens, total IgE. Allergies are often underdiagnosed.
- Thyroid assessment — an underactive thyroid worsens skin and circulation
- Consultation with an aesthetic medicine specialist — have them assess the type of dark circles and propose a specific plan
Consultation at J'ADORE — no obligation, with a plan
At J'ADORE INSTYTUT, a consultation isn't about "selling a treatment". It's diagnostics. Our doctors and specialists assess the type of dark circles, analyse the causes, check skin condition and the structure of the orbital area — and only then propose a solution.
Eye-area mesotherapy, hyaluronic acid in the tear trough, Profhilo — these are treatments we perform regularly with very good results. But just as often we say: "Start with retinol and SPF, come back in 3 months — let's see what's changed." Because an ethical salon isn't one that sells treatments. It's one that solves problems.
