Why training won't shift it
Fat on the sides and lower abdomen in men is largely down to androgens and cortisol, not laziness. Fat cells in these areas have more receptors for cortisol — the stress hormone — so they store fat faster and release it more slowly. You can reduce your waist circumference through an overall calorie deficit. But once you're already in good shape, those last few centimetres can refuse to budge for months.
This is exactly the context where cryolipolysis makes sense: not as a substitute for training, but as a complement for someone who's already taken care of the rest. It doesn't treat obesity, doesn't replace exercise, and doesn't turn you into someone else. It reduces a specific fat deposit that doesn't respond to standard tools.
How cryolipolysis works — no sugar-coating
The applicator is placed on the chosen area, draws in the tissue and lowers its temperature to a level that triggers apoptosis — the natural, programmed death of fat cells. Surrounding tissues (skin, muscle, nerves) don't respond to this temperature the same way in most people — hence the selectivity.
Dead fat cells don't disappear straight after the treatment. The body gradually absorbs and eliminates them through the lymphatic system over several weeks. Results are often visible after 4–8 weeks, with full results typically appearing after 2–3 months. If someone promises you results "right after the treatment" — they're lying.
- 01
Consultation
Assessment of the fat area, selection of the applicator for the specific zone (love handles vs lower abdomen vs groin), and exclusion of contraindications.
- 02
Treatment
The applicator is placed on the chosen area. For the first few minutes you'll feel cold and suction — then the tissue's sensitivity decreases. You can work on your laptop.
- 03
Immediately after
The area is red and slightly numb, and the tissue briefly looks like an ice cube — this is normal. A post-treatment massage supports absorption.
- 04
4–8 weeks
A difference starts to become visible — the contour looks more defined. Your body is still absorbing the remains of the fat cells.
- 05
2–3 months
Full treatment results. We assess whether one session is enough, or whether a larger area warrants an additional one.
Love handles vs lower abdomen — not the same thing
Cryolipolysis isn't a single treatment — different areas need different applicators and different approaches. In men, the most common areas involve three distinct types of deposit, each with its own characteristics:
Love handles
the most common target area for men
- a localised, well-defined deposit
- easy to grip with the applicator
- responds well in many people, even after a single session
Lower abdomen
a more challenging area
- a flat area — requires a flat applicator
- tissue is often thicker and less mobile
- in some men the fat here sits deeper (visceral) — beyond the reach of cryolipolysis
Zero downtime — literally
The most important thing for a busy schedule: you're back at work the same day. There are no scars, no recovery period, no visible signs of the treatment after a few hours. The only restriction is intense physical activity and sauna use in the first 24 hours — so as not to disrupt the process that's just begun.
The treated area may feel slightly tender to the touch for a few days, similar to after an intense workout — this is a normal response to controlled cooling. Some people experience temporary numbness or increased skin sensitivity, which resolves on its own.
What it really delivers, and what it doesn't
This is a question worth asking outright. Cryolipolysis isn't a weight-loss method — it's localised reduction. That means your weight might change only slightly, but your contour in a specific area — yes, that can change. Many people see a more defined outline in the treated area, a visible shift in proportions with the same training and diet.
- Realistic: in many people, a visible reduction in contour at the treated site after 2–3 months
- Realistic: the effect can be lasting — as long as you don't gain significant weight (fat cells are removed, but the remaining ones can still enlarge)
- Unrealistic: a dramatic change in body shape after a single session
- Unrealistic: reduction of visceral (deep abdominal) fat
- Unrealistic: replacing strength training for building muscle and shaping your physique
When it's worth combining with other treatments
Cryolipolysis reduces fat cells, but on its own it doesn't tighten skin or improve its texture. If you want a more complete effect — a smaller circumference plus firmer skin — consider combining it with treatments that stimulate collagen or improve microcirculation in the same area.
Injection lipolysis
Complements cryolipolysis in small, hard-to-reach areas — such as the groin, or zones where the applicator can't get good contact. It works through a different mechanism and can be used as part of a sequential plan.
Shockwave therapy (ESWT)
Stimulates tissue metabolism and improves its structure after reduction — often used as a follow-up to maintain and enhance the results of cryolipolysis.
Lymphatic drainage
Supports the elimination of remaining fat cells after cryolipolysis — it can speed up visible results and reduce temporary tenderness.
