Men's skin in summer — a minimalist 3-step routine
Three products. Two minutes. Skin that survives summer.
7 min readwritten for men
You have 4 minutes in the morning. That's exactly what you need for your skin to survive summer without looking like a parched desert or an oil slick. You don't need 10 steps. You don't need a cabinet full of jars. You need three products and a bit of consistency. Sounds manageable? It is.
Why summer makes things worse
Before we get to the steps — a quick word on what summer does to your skin. It does a lot.
Step 1: Cleansing — gel, not soap
This is the foundation most men get wrong. A bar of soap in the shower is not facial care. Soap has a pH of 9-10, while healthy skin sits at 4.5-5.5. Using soap on your face is like washing your car with paint stripper — technically clean, but at what cost.
Time: 60 seconds.
Step 2: Moisturiser + SPF — two in one
This is where most men give up. "I don't need cream." "Cream is for women." "My skin is oily, why moisturise?" Let's break this down.
Time: 30 seconds.
Step 3: After shaving = recovery
Shaving is the most aggressive thing men do to their skin. The blade removes not just facial hair but also a layer of the epidermis. After shaving, skin is literally exposed — micro-cuts, irritation, a compromised protective barrier.
Instead of alcohol, choose an aftershave balm with soothing, regenerating ingredients. Look for these on the label:
Allantoin — soothes irritation, may support healing
Panthenol (B5) — helps rebuild the barrier, hydrates
Bisabolol — a chamomile-derived ingredient with anti-inflammatory properties
Niacinamide (B3) — may reduce redness and regulate sebum
Time: 30 seconds.
After a workout — the 90-second protocol
Gym sessions, running, football — in summer you sweat twice as much. And here's the trap: you leave sweat on your face "for later", and an hour on you've got breakouts on your forehead.
Post-workout protocol:
Wash your face — with gel or micellar water. Straight away.
Don't touch it — dirty hands on damp, irritated skin is a recipe for inflammation.
Light moisturiser — cleansed skin needs its barrier rebuilt.
You don't need the full routine after every workout. Cleansing plus moisturising is enough. Save the full protocol (with SPF) for the morning.
When to add step 4: niacinamide serum
Three steps are enough for most men, most of the time. But if:
You tend to get oily (a shiny T-zone by midday)
Discolouration appears after shaving
You have enlarged pores on your nose
Your skin tone is uneven
…consider adding one serum: niacinamide 5-10% (vitamin B3).
Time: 15 seconds.
"I don't have time" — the morning maths
Let's count:
Cleansing: 60 seconds
Moisturiser with SPF: 30 seconds
Aftershave balm (on shaving days): 30 seconds
Serum (optional): 15 seconds
Total: 2 minutes 15 seconds. On non-shaving days — 1 minute 30 seconds.
For comparison: scrolling your phone in the bathroom in the morning takes several times longer, on average. You don't have a time problem. You have a priorities problem.
And the results? After a few weeks of consistent routine, many people notice:
Less oiliness
Less irritation after shaving
More even skin tone
Skin that looks well-rested (even when it isn't)
Slower ageing — you'll see this in a few years, but your future self will thank you
What NOT to do
Don't use soap on your face — it damages the skin barrier
Don't skip SPF because "you don't tan" — photoageing doesn't require a tan
Don't rub your face dry with a towel — pat gently, don't scrub
Don't use your partner's products — women's skincare is formulated for a different hormonal skin profile
Don't assume "good skin is just genetics" — genetics is part of the story, the rest is habits
