Two approaches, two results
The key difference is simple: extensions build on what you add — individual fibres, attached to your own lashes, create volume and length from scratch. A lash lift works with what you already have — it heats and shapes your natural lashes into a curl that can last for several weeks. That's why the results look different, and why aftercare needs a different approach.
Lash extensions
adds volume and length
- visible immediately after the treatment
- full control over length, thickness and curl
- can look very natural or clearly dramatic
- works well for short, sparse or light lashes
- needs touch-ups every few weeks
Lash lift
lifts and curls your natural lashes
- brings out the natural length of your lashes — opens up the eye without adding fibres
- no special aftercare needed after a few days
- often combined with lash tinting for a stronger effect
- works best with medium to thick lashes
- lasts several weeks with no touch-ups
How to work out what suits you — a practical test
Before your consultation, you can get a rough idea of which direction to look at. Answer a few questions honestly:
- Are your lashes already long or thick, but lying flat? → a lift may be all you need — it lifts them and opens up the eye.
- Are your lashes short, light or sparse? → a lift will give a more modest result; extensions will "add" what's missing.
- Do you want to give up mascara without adding a new aftercare routine? → a lift is easier to maintain.
- Do you want a full eye look without mascara, but with a dramatic finish? → extensions offer more styling options.
- Do you have an active lifestyle (pool, gym, sport)? → a lift holds up better; with extensions, contact with water and sweat needs care for the first day or two.
- Do you want a result for a special occasion without committing for weeks? → a lift fades gradually along with your natural lash cycle.
It's also worth considering a factor that's often overlooked: lash renewal time. Natural lashes have their own growth cycle — they shed and regrow. A lift lasts as long as your own lash cycle, and fades along with it. Extensions also shed with your natural lashes, which is why they need regular touch-ups to keep the result continuous.
When a lash lift works best
- Your natural lashes are long, but straight and pointing downward — a lift can open and lift them noticeably.
- A lifestyle with no room for a regular aftercare routine or touch-ups every few weeks.
- A first step towards giving up mascara — a lift lets you test the effect before deciding on extensions.
- Men who choose the treatment — a lash lift is discreet and needs no aftercare at all.
- Anyone who hasn't tolerated extension adhesive before — a lift uses different products.
When extensions are the better choice
Lash extensions aren't just about "more" — above all, they give you full control over the final result. An experienced stylist can design a look tailored to you: subtle, enlarging, dramatic or fully natural. This method is for anyone who wants to decide how their eyes look — whatever their natural lashes are like to begin with.
- Natural lashes are short, sparse or light — extensions even out the difference.
- You want a specific look: "cat eye," "baby doll," classic, mega-volume — each style needs a different fibre pattern.
- You want a continuous result all year round with no gaps — touch-ups every few weeks keep the look consistent.
- You have asymmetry or different lash lengths between your eyes — extensions can even this out.
- A wedding, a photoshoot, an important event — this is when a flawless result matters more than simple aftercare.
Can you combine both methods?
A lash lift and extensions are never applied at the same time — the lift solution could affect the extension adhesive. But there are situations where switching between them makes sense:
- 01
A lift as a starting point
Works well as a first experience — it shows you how an open eye changes your look, with no aftercare commitment.
- 02
A break once the effect fades
Once the lift fades with your lash cycle, your lashes are fully natural again and ready for extensions, if you choose.
- 03
Extensions after a consultation
If you want something more — your stylist will assess your lashes and recommend the right type of extensions.
- 04
Back to the lift
Once extensions are removed and your lashes have recovered, you can return to a lift — many people rotate between methods seasonally.
Lash lift + lash tinting
A classic combination — the lift lifts, the tint darkens and visually thickens the effect. Together, they give you dark, defined lashes without a single drop of mascara.
Lash lift + brow lamination
A complete eye look in a single visit. The result is consistent and natural — brows and lashes styled as one.
Lash extensions + brow styling
A full eye look — lashes and brows in one session. Brow tinting or shaping completes the effect without overdoing it.
What to expect after the treatment — for both methods
Whichever method you choose, the first few hours after the treatment come with a few rules. It's worth knowing them, so you don't undo the effect right after leaving the salon.
- After a lift: avoid moisture and rubbing your lashes for the first 24–48 hours. After that, you can do everything as normal — even swim.
- After extensions: avoid water, steam and oily products around the eyes for the first day or two. After that, daily care mainly means gently brushing them with a lash brush.
- In both cases: don't rub your eyes, and avoid sleeping face-down on your pillow.
- Mascara after a lift — you can use it, but why would you? That's exactly what the treatment is for. If you want to, apply it only to the tips.
- Mascara after extensions — not recommended; oily, waxy formulas can weaken the adhesive.
