Tinting, lifting or extensions — which lash treatment suits you?

Tinting, lifting and extensions are three different tools — and each does something different. Here's the simplest guide before your visit.

You come into the salon with one question: you want more beautiful lashes. Straight away, three paths appear: tinting, lifting and extensions. Each promise sounds tempting — but each works on a different "layer" of your lashes and suits different circumstances. The hardest decision is rarely about which option is "better" — it's about which one is better for you, your lifestyle and the result you're actually after. This guide sorts that out before you even sit down in the chair.

Three options, three completely different results

Before comparing methods, it helps to understand what each one actually changes. Tinting works on colour — not shape or length. Lifting changes the curl and optical length — it doesn't add hair. Extensions give length and volume you can't get naturally — but they need regular upkeep. These are three different tools, not three versions of the same treatment.

Lash tinting

intensifies your natural colour

  • visible lashes even without mascara
  • especially effective on light, blonde or ginger lashes
  • can create the impression of bigger, more defined eyes
  • minimal aftercare needed

Lash lift

adds curl and optically lengthens lashes

  • lifts lashes from the root, opening up the eyes
  • for many people, gives a result comparable to mascara — without the mascara
  • often combined with tinting in a single session
  • natural, subtle — lashes look like your own, just more defined

Lash extensions

add length, density and a made-up look

  • visible change in length and volume — even with very short natural lashes
  • customisable result: from natural to dramatic
  • mornings without mascara or eyeliner
  • different materials and curls tailored to your eye shape

How to work out what you're really after

Instead of asking "which method is best", start with your specific concern. A few questions to help you think it through:

  • My lashes are light and invisible without mascara → start with tinting. Colour alone might be enough.
  • My lashes are dark but straight — they "droop" downwards → this is a job for lifting. Lifting the root changes the whole look.
  • I have few lashes, or they're very short, and I want a noticeable change → consider extensions. Tinting and lifting don't add hair.
  • I want mornings without mascara or eyeliner, but without a big commitment → lift plus tint in one session. Natural result, minimal upkeep.
  • I want a dramatic effect, or I have an important event coming up → extensions give the most striking change.
  • I exercise, swim, stay active and don't want to think about my lashes → lifting or tinting hold up better against moisture than mascara. Extensions need gentler handling around water.

Your lifestyle matters more than the final look

One of the most common mistakes when choosing a lash treatment is focusing only on the "right after" result — without considering what your daily life actually looks like. A method that looks impressive in the salon can turn out to be the wrong fit if it doesn't suit your routine.

Tinting + lifting

a low-maintenance solution

  • you do nothing day to day — the effect is "built in"
  • you can wash your face as usual
  • active lifestyle, sport, swimming — no worries
  • top-ups every few weeks, a short session

Lash extensions

maximum effect, higher commitment

  • a striking change in length and density
  • minimal morning make-up needed
  • flexible styling — from natural to glam
  • regular top-ups to keep the result fresh

When to combine treatments — and when not to

Not all methods are mutually exclusive. Some can be combined — and this often gives the best result. But there are situations where caution is needed:

Tinting + lash lift

A classic combination in a single session — colour and curl together. It gives the look of "tinted and lifted" lashes without mascara. Natural, long-lasting and low-maintenance.

Lift + brow henna

Lashes and brows in one visit — a consistent eye frame with no daily make-up needed. A popular choice before a holiday or for an active lifestyle.

Lash tint + brow lamination

A combination for anyone who wants striking eyes with minimal daily make-up time.

Choosing a method also depends on your lash growth cycle — each lash naturally sheds and regrows, which affects how long each treatment lasts. It's worth treating the consultation not as a one-off choice, but as a conversation about what will work for you long-term.

How to prepare for your visit — whichever method you choose

Whichever method you choose, a few simple rules will help the result look better and last longer:

  1. 01

    Arrive with clean lashes

Remove mascara, eyeliner and any traces of make-up — ideally using an oil-based make-up remover. Clean lashes give every treatment a better base.

  2. 02

Mention any allergies and previous treatments

If you've ever reacted to lash tint or extension glue, be sure to mention it before the treatment. Your specialist may suggest a patch test or a different product.

  3. 03

Decide on the look using photos, not just words

If you have a specific result in mind, bring photos — words like "natural" or "dramatic" mean different things to different people. A photo can cut your consultation time in half.

  4. 04

Ask about aftercare before you leave the salon

Each method comes with its own aftercare. Find out what to avoid in the first few hours, which products to use, and when to come back for a top-up.
