Hair mineral analysis for women

Why women lose hair differently

For women, hair mineral analysis for women most often centres on iron balance. Monthly blood loss, pregnancy and childbirth, plant-based diets — all of this genuinely lowers iron reserves, and low ferritin is one of the most common "silent" causes of hair loss and thinning in women.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Increased hair loss — when there's noticeably more hair on your brush, in the drain and on your pillow than before.
  • Thinner, weaker, "lifeless" hair — loss of density and bounce despite good care.
  • Slow or stalled growth — hair "won't grow", regrowth is sparse.
  • Elimination diets — vegetarianism, veganism, restrictive weight loss, which easily lead to deficiencies.
  • A period of major change — after pregnancy and during breastfeeding, after illness, under heavy stress or exhaustion.
  • Supplementing "blind" — when you're taking several "hair" preparations and want to know if you actually need them.
  • Wanting to understand the cause — before investing in a series of treatments, it's worth knowing what you're actually dealing with.

The areas we work on

  1. iron and its stores — key for a follicle in its growth phase;
  2. periods of increased demand: pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding;
  3. plant-based and weight-loss diets — easy to develop a deficiency without realising it;
  4. telogen hair "shedding" after stress, illness, or stopping contraception.

Why women lose hair differently

If your hair is thinning, weaker or falling out more than before, the cause very often lies in iron levels — specifically in your iron stores, or ferritin. Monthly blood loss, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding all genuinely lower iron reserves, even when a woman feels well and a general blood test shows no anaemia. Hair mineral analysis reads this history from the strand — it averages what's been happening in your body over recent weeks, not just on the day of a blood draw.

What your cycle and diet have to do with the hair follicle

A hair follicle in its growth phase is one of the most energy-demanding tissues in the body — it needs a steady supply of iron, zinc and copper. In women on plant-based or restrictive weight-loss diets, deficiencies build up slowly and often go unnoticed for a long time. Hair mineral analysis reveals this hidden deficit — not as a "snapshot from one day", but as a longer picture spanning weeks.
Typical situations where analysis is worth considering:
  • hair started falling out after pregnancy or stopping contraception and hasn't returned to normal;
  • you've been taking "hair" supplements for several months with no visible effect;
  • you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet and want to check whether your iron levels are actually adequate;
  • telogen hair "shedding" after prolonged stress or illness;
  • you want to know whether investing in a series of treatments makes sense before starting.

What women worry about most

The most common fear is: "what if it's the thyroid or hormones, not elements?" The good news: mineral analysis and hormonal diagnostics aren't competitors — they're two complementary pictures. If the analysis shows that iron and zinc are fine and your hair is still falling out, your trichologist will tell you honestly that the next step should be medical diagnostics — rather than adding another supplement blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Will the analysis show for certain that ferritin is causing the hair loss?
Hair mineral analysis reads your iron, zinc and copper balance — an important part of the diagnostic picture. It's not, however, a definitive clinical diagnosis. If the result points to an iron deficiency, that's a strong reason to get a blood ferritin test and discuss the result with a doctor. Analysis points in a direction; a trichologist or doctor makes the diagnosis after seeing the full picture.
Can I have the analysis done while breastfeeding?
Taking a hair strand is completely safe — it's a non-invasive test, with no needles and no injected substances. Breastfeeding is also one of the moments when it's worth checking your mineral balance, since the body's demands are higher then.
I'm already taking an iron supplement — does analysis still make sense?
Yes — especially then. The analysis will show whether your supplementation has actually corrected the deficiency, and whether it hasn't thrown off the balance with other elements (like copper). Without a result, there's no way to know if the dose is right, too low or too high.
How long before I see results after following the recommendations?
Hair grows slowly — the first changes in density and shedding usually appear after several months of consistently following recommendations. That's exactly why it's worth doing a follow-up analysis after that time, to check whether your levels have evened out.
Does a plant-based diet always lead to iron deficiency?
Not always — but the risk is real, since non-haem iron (from plants) is absorbed less efficiently than haem iron (from meat). Mineral analysis lets you assess whether your diet is meeting your needs, or whether it's worth strengthening it or adding targeted supplementation.
