Trichology consultation + trichoscopy for women

Why women’s hair loss is different

In women, hair loss is most often diffuse — hair thins evenly, particularly along the parting and around the crown, while the frontal hairline usually remains intact. Systemic factors are very often involved (thyroid conditions, iron and ferritin deficiencies, the post-partum period, diet, stress). This is why trichology consultation for women is largely about unravelling the causes — trichoscopy combined with a thorough medical history.

When it's worth it — indications

  • You notice increased hair loss — more hair on your brush, in the drain or on your pillow than usual.
  • You can see thinning — a wider parting, visible scalp, less volume or a receding hairline.
  • You have seborrhoea or dandruff — an oily, itchy scalp or flaking that returns despite using shampoos.
  • After childbirth, dieting, illness or stress — sudden, diffuse hair loss several weeks after the event.
  • You want to start hair treatment — and need to know where to begin, rather than buying products blindly.
  • You are already doing something for your hair — but you cannot see results and do not know whether it is the right approach.
  • As prevention — there have been hair concerns in your family and you want to spot changes early.

The areas we work on

  1. diffuse thinning — a wider parting, less volume;
  2. telogen shedding after childbirth, dieting, illness or severe stress;
  3. hormonal factors and deficiencies — a common reason for referral for tests;
  4. seborrhoea and dandruff alongside thinning.

Why women’s hair loss is different

For women, hair loss rarely looks like “baldness” — it is a subtle change that can remain invisible to others for a long time, while being very noticeable to you. A wider parting, less volume after tying your hair into a bun, more hair in the drain than a month ago. These are the signs — not dramatic hair loss — that indicate it is worth coming in.
Women’s hair loss is often driven by mechanisms with clear underlying causes: iron and ferritin deficiencies, thyroid fluctuations, hormonal changes after childbirth or stopping contraception, and restrictive dieting. Several factors often overlap. Trichoscopy and a consultation history help establish which is the main cause and which merely worsen the picture.

Your most common concerns before the visit

Many women postpone a consultation because they fear hearing: “It is alopecia and nothing can be done anymore.” In practice, the overwhelming majority of women’s hair loss involves reversible processes or ones that can be effectively supported — telogen effluvium after childbirth, stress or illness, or early-stage androgen-related thinning. The camera shows this precisely: density, the proportion of miniaturising hairs and follicle condition. You leave not with the diagnosis “it is bad”, but with the answer: “this is what it is, and this is what we will do.”
If deficiencies or hormones are involved, the trichologist will refer you to the appropriate doctor. This is not a failed visit. It is the right order of care.

Before your visit — what you should know

Come with clean hair, without oils or masks — a thick layer of styling products can obscure what matters most on camera. If you have test results for ferritin, iron, TSH, full blood count or vitamin D, bring them with you. Do not leave out things that may seem unrelated: a dietary change, a new medicine, surgery or severe stress several months ago. These are often key to the full picture.

Frequently asked questions

I have a lot of hair on my brush after washing — is that already a reason to book a visit?
Not necessarily straight away. However, if you see clearly more hair than over recent months, or notice a visible change in volume or density along your parting, it is worth checking. Normal daily shedding is several dozen hairs. What is concerning is not the volume itself, but a change in proportion and the speed of thinning.
Hair loss started after childbirth — do I need to do something, or should I wait for it to go away on its own?
Postpartum telogen effluvium does settle on its own for many women. However, a consultation is worthwhile to confirm this — and to rule out anything else occurring alongside telogen effluvium, such as iron deficiencies that can worsen hair loss. You will also know what to expect and when, rather than watching your hair with concern.
Do I need to come with test results, or do you order them?
If you have recent test results, bring them with you. Ferritin, iron, TSH, full blood count and vitamin D are the parameters most often relevant in women’s hair loss. If you do not have them, the trichologist will indicate which tests are worth doing after trichoscopy and your consultation history. The visit is still worthwhile without results, but with them the assessment is more complete straight away.
I have been taking a “hair supplement” for several months and see no difference — what am I doing wrong?
The supplement may not match your cause, or the cause may run deeper (for example, ferritin may still be too low despite supplementation). General supplements are not therapy — they support the right foundation. Consultation establishes that foundation.
My mother experienced thinning around the age of 50 — will the same happen to me?
Family history increases the risk, but it is not a certainty. Early diagnosis helps assess whether and how quickly the process is progressing. It also allows action before follicle miniaturisation goes too far. The earlier you start — the more you can retain.
