Dreadlocks for men are a hairstyle with real character — and at the same time one of the more practical decisions you can make about your hair. After a one-time formation, which is the longest and most labour-intensive stage, day-to-day hair management shrinks to a minimum: washing, drying and protecting the locks at night. There's no styling, no arranging. There are regular visits for root maintenance — and that's it.

For men, dreadlocks are usually thicker and more substantial than for women. This choice is both practical (fewer locks means shorter formation and maintenance time) and aesthetic — thick dreadlocks give a strong, striking effect without decorative extras. Often paired with short or shaved sides, they create a contrast that works both day to day and for more formal occasions.

Hair type — what helps, what needs attention

Dreadlocks can be created on most hair types, though felting proceeds differently depending on the strand's structure. Curly hair with a coarser texture felts more quickly and naturally, with less effort — the lock packs together on its own. Straight, smooth hair needs more precision during formation and a slightly longer maturing phase, but still reaches a full, even result.

The condition of the hair and scalp is key. Active dandruff, seborrhoea or scalp inflammation rules out formation — not because a lock can't technically be created, but because the problem worsens under the lock and becomes very hard to treat afterwards. We treat the scalp first, then form the dreadlocks. If your hair is heavily damaged or brittle, the stylist will assess this at consultation and tell you plainly whether it's worth strengthening the strand first.

Dreadlocks with shaved sides — how it works in practice

Thick dreadlocks on top with short or shaved sides is one of the most popular combinations for men. The contrast between the mass of the lock and the clean line of the sides tidies up the whole hairstyle and makes the dreadlocks look controlled, not chaotic. Cutting the sides is a separate service — at regular root-maintenance visits, the sides can be taken care of at the same time, so the whole style always looks complete.

Aftercare — simple and practical

Dreadlocks are, contrary to appearances, low maintenance, but a few rules need following so the locks look good and the scalp stays healthy:

Wash dreadlocks regularly with a shampoo free of silicones and conditioners — these ingredients loosen the lock and build up inside the strand. Focus washing on the scalp, not the length of the lock.
After washing, dreadlocks need to be dried thoroughly — a thick lock dries far more slowly than loose hair. Moisture trapped inside can smell musty. Use a cool setting on your hairdryer or let it air-dry fully.
A scarf or headband at night protects fresh locks from loosening and frizzing. This matters most in the first few weeks, while the dreadlocks are maturing.
A light oil applied only to the scalp eases dryness and itching between washes — apply it to the scalp only, never to the lock.

Are dreadlocks a lot of work day to day?

Quite the opposite — after formation, which is time-consuming just once, daily hair management is minimal. You don't arrange, style, or fight with your hair in the morning. Regular root maintenance at the salon (every few weeks or less often, depending on how fast your hair grows) replaces everything another hairstyle would demand.

How long does my hair need to be to get dreadlocks?

Minimum length depends on the technique and the target thickness of the lock — thinner dreadlocks need a bit more hair, while thicker ones can start sooner. If you don't have enough of your own hair, the effect can be supplemented with extended dreadlocks. We assess this at consultation before formation.

Can dreadlocks be removed if I change my mind?

Yes — removal is a separate salon visit. We unravel the locks with as much care for the hair as possible, though after long-term wear the hair is usually weakened and needs recovery. It's important to have this done by the stylist — attempts to unravel at home often end in serious strand damage or the need to cut the hair shorter.

Is my hair thick enough for dreadlocks?

Density mainly determines how many dreadlocks you can realistically have and how thick they can be — locks that are too thick and heavy on insufficient density can overload the roots and cause tension along the hairline. The stylist will assess this precisely at consultation. Often, fewer but thicker dreadlocks turn out to be the optimal choice — and this works great for men.

Can dreadlocks be combined with regular side trims?

Yes, and it's one of the most popular combinations. Trimming the sides during a root-maintenance visit keeps the whole hairstyle looking sharp. The stylist will price and plan both services together.
