You cover cracked heels with socks all year round. Sandals feel out of reach — not because you dislike summer, but because your skin looks like you don't care for it, even though you do. A corn on your toe hurts more and more, and a nail has changed colour for no obvious reason. A visit to a beauty salon isn't enough — these problems need a specialist, not nail polish.

Women's feet are structured differently from men's: narrower in the midfoot, wider at the forefoot, with a greater tendency towards bunions and nails pressing into the side folds when wearing narrow-toed shoes. Heels — even occasional ones — shift the pressure point, encouraging calluses to form exactly where the skin is already vulnerable. Hormonal fluctuations during the cycle and pregnancy affect skin hydration and tissue elasticity.
Gel polish, gel, or nail polish left on for months without a break can lead to onycholysis: the nail lifts from the nail bed, changes colour, and becomes prone to fungal infection. A podologist will assess whether it's a mechanical reaction, a fungal infection, or a case for reconstruction. They don't guess — they diagnose.

Nails after gel polish, heels before summer — when to see a podologist

The most common scenario: sandal season is just around the corner, and your heels look like no single pedicure will fix them. Or the nail on your big toe digs into the skin on the outer side, and you feel pain just putting your shoe on. Or something is growing under the gel that's better checked before it grows further.

  • Deep cracked heel — treatment with a podology burr, removal of hardened skin, urea cream matched to the severity of the hyperkeratosis
  • Ingrown nail — tamponade for acute pain, or a corrective brace that changes the direction of growth without surgery
  • Onycholysis or fungal infection — cleaning, thinning the plate, antifungal preparations matched to the stage
  • Nail reconstruction — rebuilding with podology gel when the plate is damaged or missing; a natural result that protects the nail bed

What matters if you have diabetes or vascular conditions

Diabetic feet need a different approach — more care, sterile instruments, and an awareness that healing works differently. The podologist at J'adore understands this context. If you have diabetes, tell us before your visit — we'll adapt every step. This doesn't rule out treatment — quite the opposite: regular podology care for clients with diabetes is prevention against more serious complications.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a pedicure with polish straight after a podology treatment?
Yes — and this is exactly how many clients plan their visits: the podologist treats the issue first, then the pedicurist handles the aesthetics. At J'adore Instytut, you can book both treatments in a single appointment. The exception: if the nail is undergoing reconstruction or active fungal treatment, the podologist will tell you plainly whether polish is advisable at that point.
I've had cracked heels for years — can podology really help?
Yes, but it needs two things: the treatment itself and daily home care. The podologist removes hardened skin and recommends a urea cream at a strength matched to your issue. Without regular moisturising, the cracks will come back — but with daily cream use and a visit every 4–6 weeks, results last well.
I wore gel polish for almost a year without a break — my nails look bad. What will the podologist do?
First, they'll assess exactly what's going on. Discolouration, onycholysis and fungal infection can look similar but need different treatment. The podologist chooses the method based on diagnosis, not appearance. For mechanical onycholysis, regrowth with proper care is often enough; for a fungal infection, topical preparations are needed, and for advanced cases, a dermatology consultation.
Does podology hurt more than a regular pedicure?
For heel or callus treatment — it doesn't hurt at all, it brings relief. For ingrown nails, the podologist works precisely and carefully; the discomfort of the treatment is nowhere near the pain of an ingrown nail over the following days. After tamponade or fitting a brace, many clients say the relief is immediate.
Can I visit a podologist during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Mechanical treatments — heel care, callus removal, tamponade — are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We're more careful with preparations applied to the skin; tell the podologist about pregnancy or breastfeeding so they can rule out ingredients best avoided at this time. For fungal infections requiring systemic (oral) treatment, that decision belongs to your dermatologist or gynaecologist.
