An ingrown toenail on your big toe for months. With every step, you feel it dig into the skin — especially in work boots or after training. You've tried cutting it deeper, tucking the edge under with a sock, trimming at an angle — nothing works. It grows back the same way. Or a heel that cracks until it hurts in dry weather. Or a nail that lost its colour after the pool and hasn't looked right for months. These problems won't go away on their own — and they don't need surgery to fix.

Men's feet — different strains, different conditions

Men's feet are, statistically, wider and heavier, with stronger foot muscles — but this doesn't protect against podology conditions; if anything, it encourages other forms of them. Steel-toe work boots or tight trainers during intense training create a constant pressure point exactly where a callus can grow. Changing rooms, pools and gyms are high-risk environments for fungal infections — fungus thrives in moist conditions and spreads via surfaces.
Men more often cut their nails too short or round the corners — one of the main mechanisms behind ingrown nails. An ingrown nail in an athlete who can't afford a break from training needs a podology solution, not waiting it out.

What a podologist can do for your feet — specifically

We choose the treatment to match the diagnosis, not a fixed template:
  • Ingrown nail — tamponade gives immediate relief from acute pain; a corrective brace (metal or composite) gradually changes the direction of the plate's growth, without surgery. The podologist selects the brace's parameters based on your anatomy and the severity of the problem
  • Calluses and hyperkeratosis — a podology burr removes hard, painful thickened skin on the sole and toes. One session makes a clear difference; repeating every 6–8 weeks prevents recurrence
  • Nail fungus — cleaning and thinning the affected plate plus topical preparations. This shortens treatment time and reduces the risk of spreading to other nails
  • Nail reconstruction — after injury, long-term ingrowth or mechanical damage, the podologist rebuilds the plate with podology gel. The result is natural, and the nail bed is protected
  • Diabetic foot — extra care, sterile instruments, condition documentation — here, regular visits aren't a luxury but part of prevention

Podology and physical activity — no need to stop training

Most podology treatments don't require you to skip training. Callus treatment or tamponade doesn't rule out activity on the same day — as long as your footwear doesn't press on the treated area. With a corrective brace, the podologist will tell you precisely how to wear sports shoes so as not to disrupt the correction. The only reason to pause would be active inflammation around the nail — and that decision belongs to the podologist, not a blanket rule.

Frequently asked questions

My ingrown nail comes back every time I trim it — can a podologist actually fix this?
Trimming it yourself doesn't remove the cause of ingrowth — it only delays the outcome by a few weeks. A corrective brace gradually changes the direction the plate grows, over several weeks to a few months, depending on your anatomy. After completing the series, many clients don't have the problem return — the nail has grown out in the right direction. The podologist will assess whether your case needs a brace, tamponade, or both.
Can I go training the same day as a podology visit?
Usually, yes. With callus treatment or tamponade — as long as your footwear doesn't press on the treated area, activity is fine. With a corrective brace, the podologist will advise exactly how to manage sports footwear so as not to disrupt the correction. Tell the podologist about your plans for the day before the treatment — they'll adjust the method or the order of steps.
I've had a nail fungal infection for a few months. Is it embarrassing to mention it to a podologist?
Nail fungus is a condition, not a failure of hygiene — and podologists diagnose it regularly, especially in physically active men. Pools, gyms and saunas are risk environments regardless of hygiene. The podologist cleans the affected plate, applies topical preparations, and assesses whether a dermatology consultation is needed. The earlier you come in, the shorter the series of visits.
Will anyone notice I've seen a podologist?
A podology treatment improves the condition of your feet, not their everyday appearance. Smooth heels, well-groomed nails without discolouration, no pain when walking — these are results you notice yourself with every step, without needing comment. A cosmetic pedicure with polish remains an option — without it, the result is simply natural.
I have diabetes — will a podologist see me, and is it safe?
Yes — diabetic feet are one of the main reasons to see a podologist, not a contraindication. The podologist works with sterilised instruments, extra care, and documents the condition of your feet. Tell us about your diabetes and current management level before your visit — we'll adapt every step. Regular podology visits are part of preventing complications, and it's worth starting as early as possible.
