Cryolipolysis is one of the best-researched non-invasive methods for reducing fat tissue. It relies on the fact that fat cells (adipocytes) are more sensitive to low temperatures than the tissue around them. Performed correctly, it's effective and safe.

How does cryolipolysis work?

Cryolipolysis works on the principle of selective sensitivity of fat cells to cold. Adipocytes crystallise under controlled low temperature, triggering apoptosis — programmed cell death.

  • The applicator attaches to your skin — suction draws in a fold of fat
  • The temperature is precisely lowered for a set period
  • Adipocytes crystallise → apoptosis is triggered
  • Dead fat cells are gradually cleared by the lymphatic system over several weeks
  • Your skin, blood vessels and muscles remain undamaged

Who is cryolipolysis for?

Cryolipolysis is a body contouring method, not a general weight-loss treatment. Best results are seen in people with localised fat that resists diet and exercise — at a stable, healthy weight.

How many sessions do you need?

One session can produce visible results, but the final number of treatments depends on the thickness of the fat fold and your expected outcome.

  • Small fold of fat — usually 1–2 sessions are enough
  • Medium fold — 2–3 sessions are often recommended
  • Large fold — may require more sessions, with appropriate intervals between them

When do results appear?

Cryolipolysis works gradually — results appear as your body removes the damaged fat cells. In the first few weeks, mild swelling may occur; this is a normal part of the process.

  • First weeks after the treatment — possible swelling and redness, no visible effect yet (this is normal)
  • 4–6 weeks — the first visible changes often appear
  • 8–12 weeks — most people see the full result of the session
  • Up to 6 months — final, stabilised result

Does it hurt?

In the first few minutes of the treatment, you'll feel the suction of the applicator and intense cold. After a few minutes, the area numbs on its own — the low temperature acts as a local anaesthetic, which is why most people tolerate the treatment well.

What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia?

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) is a rare complication of cryolipolysis in which, instead of reducing fat, the treated area actually gains fat in a shape matching the applicator. It occurs more often in men.

Cryolipolysis or carboxytherapy — which to choose?

Both methods target fat tissue, but they differ in mechanism, indications and results. The right choice depends on what you want to achieve.

Preparation and aftercare

Cryolipolysis doesn't require any special preparation. You can eat and drink normally before the treatment. After the session, it's worth supporting your body as it clears the destroyed fat cells.

  • Drink plenty of water — it supports the lymphatic system in removing adipocytes
  • Physical activity after the treatment speeds up metabolism and the elimination of fat cells
  • Massage of the treated area straight after the session (performed at the salon) — standard practice
  • Avoid the sauna for the first few days after the treatment
