A chiselled jawline — TikTok exercises vs. a doctor's treatment

Science tells a very different story from TikTok.

6 min readwritten for men

Before you order a jawline exerciser from Amazon, read this. The data, the biology and the experience of aesthetic doctors all agree: most viral TikTok methods don't produce any structural change. But some treatments do work — and it's worth knowing which ones.

Jawline contouring: the most searched-for aesthetic treatment among men

This isn't an exaggeration. Google Trends data and ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) reports consistently show that jawline contouring is the number one treatment men aged 25–45 search for. Searches for "jawline filler men" have risen by more than 180% over the past few years, compared with 2020.

Why the jawline specifically? Because it's an evolutionary signal. Research in evolutionary psychology confirms it: a defined jawline in men correlates with perceived dominance, health and attractiveness. This isn't vanity — it's biology, and we're all subconsciously drawn to it.

The problem is that not everyone is born with a jawline straight off a Hollywood poster. That's where the search for solutions begins — from free ones on TikTok to treatments in a clinic.

TikTok: mewing, exercises, gua sha — fact or fiction?

  • In children and teenagers (up to around 18–20 years old), orthopaedic forces can influence the development of the facial skeleton — functional appliances work on exactly this principle.
  • In adults, the facial bones are fully mineralised. The force of the tongue is dozens of times too weak to remodel them.
  • There isn't a single peer-reviewed clinical study confirming that mewing works in adults.
  • Dr Mike Mew was removed from the British Orthodontic Society for promoting unproven claims.
  • The masseter muscle really does hypertrophy with intensive exercise — just like a biceps at the gym.
  • But an enlarged masseter widens the LOWER part of the face, giving it a square, bulky shape. That's the opposite of the sharp, V-shaped jawline you're after.
  • For many people, intensive chewing leads to bruxism, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, headaches and enamel wear.
  • Gua sha does improve lymphatic drainage — the face can look slightly slimmer for a few hours afterwards.
  • It doesn't change bone structure, doesn't reduce fat tissue, and doesn't structurally contour the jawline.
  • The effect is purely temporary — think of how your face looks slimmer in the morning after sleeping on your back, once gravity has drained the fluids.

What really determines your jawline?

The jawline you see in the mirror is the result of four factors:

  • Jawbone — your genetic skeleton. You can't change it without surgery (osteotomy). It determines your baseline projection and width.
  • Soft tissue — skin, subcutaneous fat, muscle. This is where non-surgical treatments can make a difference.
  • Submental fat — a double chin blurs the jawline even in people with good bone structure.
  • Skin firmness — with age, skin loses elasticity, starts to sag and blurs the contour.

Treatments that can genuinely contour the jawline

  • Results are visible immediately, and reach their optimum after 2 weeks, once any swelling has settled.
  • Results last: 12–18 months in many patients — the jaw area has low mobility, which helps the filler last.
  • The treatment is reversible — hyaluronidase can dissolve the filler.
  • Ideal for: men with insufficient projection at the jaw angle, asymmetry, or a "soft" contour.
  • Pain-free — it feels like a warm massage. Zero downtime.
  • A series of sessions every 1–2 weeks; results build gradually over several months after completion.
  • Ideal as a complement to volumetry, or on its own for mild "loosening" of the contour.
  • Ideal for: men aged 30–50 with early signs of losing firmness in the lower face.
  • A few sessions, spaced several weeks apart.
  • Swelling for a few days is normal — the lymphatic system is clearing out the dead cells.
  • The effect is often lasting — destroyed fat cells don't grow back.
  • Ideal for: men with localised fat deposits under the chin that don't respond to diet and exercise.
  • When it makes sense: bruxism with masseter hypertrophy, a square lower face caused by muscle rather than bone, or wanting to shift from a "heavy" to a "defined" contour.
  • The effect builds over a few weeks and, in many patients, lasts for several months.
  • A visible reduction in the masseter after 2–3 sessions.

Realistic expectations — what you can change, and what you can't

No treatment will give you a Hollywood-poster jawline if your genetic bone structure says otherwise. What treatments can do:

  • Add projection to the jaw angle (filler).
  • Sharpen the line from ear to chin (filler + RF).
  • Remove or reduce a double chin (lipolysis).
  • Slim down a bulky lower face (masseter Botox).
  • Firm up mildly sagging skin (RF, ultrasound).

The plan: how it works in practice

  • Medical consultation — analysis of facial proportions, assessment of tissue, and a discussion of your goals.
  • 3D analysis (photography or scanning) — an objective assessment of symmetry, projection and proportions.
  • Personalised plan — for example, HA volumetry (jaw angle) combined with masseter Botox and a series of RF sessions.
  • Delivery — spread across several visits over 2–3 months.
  • Follow-up after 4–6 weeks — assessing results, with a touch-up if needed.

J'ADORE INSTYTUT — we welcome men

At J'ADORE, a significant proportion of our patients are men — and that share is growing year on year. We understand that your expectations are different: you want a natural result, minimal downtime, and to avoid looking like you've "had something done" — just like you simply look good.

We use the Accent XL platform for non-invasive skin tightening, perform jawline volumetry, and run submental lipolysis protocols. Every plan starts with a consultation — no obligation, no pressure.
