Cosmelan for men

Skin that looks older than you are — and what to do about it

In men, hyperpigmentation is usually the result of years without sunscreen — sun spots on the forehead, temples, an uneven line between face and neck, and post-inflammatory marks from acne and acne scarring. On top of that, skin tends to be oilier, and there's often no SPF habit. This is an area for Cosmelan in men — evening out skin tone without altering features.

When it's worth it — indications

  • Melasma — symmetrical, brownish patches on the cheeks, forehead and above the upper lip; usually hormonal in origin.
  • Hormonal hyperpigmentation — after contraception, HRT, or pregnancy; often extensive and long-standing.
  • Sun spots and lentigo — the result of years of UV exposure, "age spots" on the face, hands, décolletage.
  • Uneven, "patchy" skin tone — skin with multiple small areas of hyperpigmentation from different causes.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark marks left by acne, injury, or previous treatments; difficult for surface peels to address.
  • Hyperpigmentation that laser hasn't helped or has made worse — Cosmelan works enzymatically, not thermally, so it doesn't carry the risk of a reverse reaction the way light-based treatments can with melasma.

The areas we work on

  1. sun spots on the forehead and temples — the result of no SPF habit;
  2. post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and acne scarring after years of acne;
  3. an uneven face-to-neck colour line in people who work or train in the sun;
  4. the shaving question: during the peeling phase, we pause razor shaving to avoid irritating skin.

Skin that looks older than you are — and what to do about it

Statistically, men are less likely to use sunscreen. Years of unprotected UV exposure accumulate in the skin over time — as uneven tone, darker patches on the forehead, temples and cheeks, a greyish cast that gives the impression of fatigue even after a good night's sleep. Added to this are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: acne marks, shaving irritation, micro-injuries.
Cosmelan is a treatment designed precisely for these concerns — and it works regardless of whether you have looked after your skin before or not.

Anatomy of the problem — why skin tone deteriorates

Male skin is on average around 25% thicker than female skin, has a higher density of sebaceous glands, and loses collagen more slowly — these are its strengths. But the same properties mean post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (from acne, from shaving) can be more intense, and the pigmentation mechanism more resistant to surface treatment.
Cosmelan doesn't just exfoliate the top layer. It blocks tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin production — at cellular level. The inhibitors in the product work on multiple fronts: azelaic acid, kojic acid, phytic acid and retinol simultaneously suppress pigment synthesis and speed up the removal of existing pigment. The result isn't a temporary lightening — it's a reset of the pigmentation mechanism.

Shaving, facial hair and treatment — what you really need to know

Men with a beard, or who shave regularly, have one priority question: how does this fit with the treatment? The answer is straightforward.
During the week of intensive peeling after the mask, skin is sensitive and regenerating — shaving with a razor is not recommended during this time, and shaving with a blade is out entirely. This lasts seven days. After that week, shaving returns to normal — with one caveat: shaving foam or gel should be gentle, alcohol-free, and without strong active ingredients that could irritate skin during the Cosmelan 2 home course.
If you wear a beard, this week is much easier. The beard masks the peeling on the cheeks and chin, while the temples and forehead — where hyperpigmentation is usually most pronounced and Cosmelan's results are most visible — remain exposed.

A week that stops you — and a year worth it

The seven days after treatment are the only period that genuinely requires a change of plans. Peeling is visible — skin turns red, flakes of epidermis come away, and your face isn't suited to important face-to-face meetings. Remote work, or a week with fewer social commitments, is the ideal plan.
This isn't a week of illness. It's a week in which skin does something it would never do on its own: removes years of built-up pigment and resets its production mechanism. After that week — and after six weeks of home care — the skin tone you see in the mirror will be different from anything a cream alone could achieve.
Results last over a year. On one condition: daily SPF 50+ every morning. Without it, melanin reactivates under UV and hyperpigmentation returns — not because the treatment failed, but because the sun is stronger than any depigmenting agent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do weight training during the Cosmelan course?
For the first week (the peeling phase), intense training is not recommended — profuse sweating may irritate the skin during regeneration and disrupt the treatment. Walking and lighter activity are fine. From the second week, when the Cosmelan 2 cream treatment begins, you return to your normal training plan — remembering about SPF 50+ before every outdoor workout and about washing off sweat after training without rubbing your face.
Will people notice I've had a treatment?
It depends on the period. During the week of peeling — yes, the skin looks as if you got badly sunburnt and is peeling. After that week — nobody knows you had the treatment. People will only notice that you look well: even skin tone, no spots, a more rested face. This is exactly the effect most men want to achieve: improvement without the question “what have you had done?”.
Does Cosmelan also work on hyperpigmentation from shaving and acne?
Yes — post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is one of the types that responds best to the Cosmelan protocol. Acne marks, dark spots from shaving irritation, uneven tone around the chin and jaw — all respond to tyrosinase inhibitors. In men with a history of acne, or sensitive skin that reacts to shaving, results are often very noticeable.
Is the product dose and exposure time the same as for women?
The treatment course is selected individually — according to skin phototype, the depth of hyperpigmentation and skin reactivity, not gender. Thicker male skin may tolerate a slightly longer mask exposure time, but this is a specialist's decision after assessment during consultation. The amount of product and the concentration of the home-care regimen are each time tailored to the anatomy and therapeutic goal of the individual.
Is there an aftercare routine that doesn't require lots of products?
Yes — and that is one of the reasons why Cosmelan is popular among men who are reluctant to follow an elaborate skincare routine. During the course you need three things: Cosmelan 2 in the morning and evening, Melan Recovery to soothe during the peeling phase and SPF 50+ every morning. Zero multi-step rituals. After the course, a moisturising cream and an SPF for everyday use are enough — and the skin itself is in better condition than before the treatment.
