Dermamelan for men

Melasma in men — a different mechanism, the same effectiveness

In men, melasma is rarer, but when it does occur, it can be exceptionally stubborn — sun-induced melanosis more often dominates after years of outdoor work, sport and no SPF, along with post-acne pigmentation. Male skin is thicker and oilier, and a lack of sun-protection habits is the biggest threat to how long results last. This is the specifics of Dermamelan in men.
Duration
around an hour in the salon + a mask worn for several hours at home
Result
many months of remission with consistent SPF use
Recovery
several to a dozen or so days of intensive flaking
Sessions
one in-clinic treatment + a few weeks of at-home care (about 6 months in total)
Performed by

When it's worth it — indications

  • Melasma and chloasma — symmetrical grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead and above the upper lip; hormone-dependent and resistant to standard methods.
  • Post-pregnancy pigmentation — chloasma triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy; one of the most common indications.
  • Pigmentation after contraception and during hormonal changes — when the pill or hormonal fluctuations "switch on" melanocytes.
  • Deep sun spots (lentigines) — the result of years of sun exposure on the face, temples and décolletage.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — especially with darker skin tones, where it's more pronounced and harder to treat.
  • Cases resistant to other methods — when superficial peels, IPL or laser haven't given a satisfactory result, or have even made the problem worse.
  • Darker skin phototypes (IV–VI) — where the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is higher, and Dermamelan remains safe.

The areas we work on

  1. deep sun-induced melanosis — forehead, temples, cheeks;
  2. scarring and post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH), more pronounced with darker phototypes;
  3. oilier skin — needs thorough degreasing before the mask;
  4. important: no shaving during the flaking period (several to a dozen or so days).

Melasma in men — a different mechanism, the same effectiveness

In men, melasma and deep pigmentation are less often hormone-driven and more often the result of years of UV exposure without adequate protection — on the forehead, temples and cheeks. Testosterone doesn't protect melanocytes from sun activity; without SPF, melanin overproduction builds up over the years, and standard vitamin C and niacinamide cosmetics can't remove pigment lodged in the deeper layers of the epidermis.
Dermamelan reaches a level that pharmacy creams cannot reach. Concentrated tyrosinase inhibitors switch off the enzyme that produces pigment at its source — they do not mask hyperpigmentation, but block its formation. The effect is clear and long-lasting: with daily SPF protection, hyperpigmentation usually does not return for 12–18 months.

Shaving, facial hair and skin during the protocol — practical rules

Shaving is a matter worth discussing before the treatment. For the first 7–10 days after removing the mask, the skin peels intensively — mechanical irritation with a shaver or razor during this time increases the risk of irritation and may disrupt the regeneration process. A practical approach:
  • Before the treatment: you can shave normally right up to the day of your consultation
  • First 7–10 days after treatment: if possible, pause shaving, or use only an electric shaver with minimal contact and no foam
  • Once flaking has finished: normal shaving resumes; avoid alcohol-based products and harsh aftershave balms for the first 4–6 weeks
  • Facial hair: a beard and moustache in the treated area can offer protection, but under facial hair the cream must be applied precisely — the specialist will show you how

Strength training and physical activity during the course

Intense exercise, sauna and hot showers should be limited in the first week. Heat and sweat irritate the flaking skin barrier and can prolong recovery. This isn't a ban on activity — it's a week of lighter effort that translates into a better final result.
After the peeling is complete, training can resume without restrictions. One condition: SPF 50+ before every outdoor workout — this rule applies throughout the entire 6-month home treatment and is essential for lasting results. Apply sunscreen carefully and generously.

How discreet are the results — will anyone notice

Once recovery is complete (around 10 days), skin looks significantly better — but no one will say you've had anything done. The result is an even skin tone and reduced pigmentation, not a change in your features or an overall lightening of the face. People around you might notice that you look better or more rested — without identifying a specific treatment.
The flaking week itself is visible — skin is red and peeling. Most men schedule this time with fewer meetings, or work remotely. It's a one-off cost for a result that lasts over a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return to work immediately after Dermamelan?
For the first 7–10 days, skin is noticeably red and flaking — working remotely or taking leave is the best option. After that, you can return without restrictions. If your job involves frequent meetings or client contact, schedule the treatment at the start of a holiday or a long weekend.
Can I use an electric shaver while my skin is flaking?
An electric shaver with gentle contact — yes, if needed. A razor or manual shaving in the flaking area — no, not for the first 7–10 days. Mechanical irritation can disrupt healing and prolong recovery. A specialist will discuss an individual care plan with you for this period.
Does SPF 50+ really have to be applied every day — even in winter, even in the office?
Yes — UVA radiation passes through glass and is present all year round, regardless of cloud cover. It is UVA that reactivates melanocytes and can bring back hyperpigmentation within a few weeks. SPF 50+ every morning is not an option — it is a condition for the durability of the effect that cost you time and investment.
Can I combine Dermamelan with mesotherapy or Dermapen at the same time?
Not directly — the skin needs a minimum of 4–6 weeks after finishing the home course before further treatments can be planned. After this time, depigmenting mesotherapy or Dermapen can enhance and prolong the effects of Dermamelan — a specialist will tailor a maintenance plan individually. Is this treatment only for older men? I'm 32 and have sun-induced hyperpigmentation. Dermamelan has no upper or lower age limit — the indication is hyperpigmentation, not age. Men in every age group benefit from this course: some after years of neglecting SPF, others after post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following acne. An earlier response usually means a shorter course and a better long-term result.
