Men's manicure at J'adore Instytut has nothing to do with coloured polish or a "done" look. It's hygiene and hand grooming, done the male way: nails trimmed and evenly shaped, cuticles tidied, calluses removed, smooth skin — usually with no colour at all, or with a discreet, colourless finish. Men's manicure is nail and hand-skin care tailored to a masculine aesthetic. Your stylist trims and shapes the nails to an even, natural length, tidies the cuticles (without aggressive cutting), softens and removes calluses around the nail plate, and smooths the skin on your hands. The finish is either a colourless coat or natural buffing — no colour, no shine, no "salon effect".
This isn't "a women's treatment in a men's version". It's a standard of presentation in its own right — just as expected as a visit to a hairdresser or barber. The goal is simple: hands that look well-groomed, not "done".
Did you know: the Japanese manicure (no polish) is a favourite among athletes and men who value discretion. The nail plate is nourished with a natural-ingredient paste and buffed to a healthy, slightly satin shine — the result looks like "just healthy nails", not a styling job.
How it works
A man's nail plate is typically thicker and stiffer — built from more densely packed keratin layers that grow faster. This explains two things at once: why home clippers leave micro-cracks at the free edge (a stiff plate doesn't cut cleanly — it splits along its layers), and why those cracks later catch on fabric and split further. A file worked in one direction seals the edge layer by layer, instead of splitting it — which is why an evenly filed edge lasts longer than one that's simply been cut.
The second part of the work concerns the cuticle and the surrounding skin ridge. This thin membrane at the base seals the junction between the nail plate and the skin. Manual work, cold weather and frequent washing dry it out, harden it, and cause it to lift and form hangnails. Softening and pushing it back, rather than cutting it, restores the seal, and regular oiling maintains the elasticity that stops hangnails from forming. Natural shine, meanwhile, comes down to simple physics: a buffed nail plate reflects light evenly, instead of scattering it across micro-irregularities — which is why the nail looks healthy even without any coating on it.
Did you know: the nail plate isn't a single solid layer — it's three layers of keratin bonded together. Nail splitting isn't a simple crack, then — it's a separation along the boundary between these layers. That's why it always starts at the free edge, exactly where water, detergent and everyday friction do their work.

Contraindications
Men's manicure is a safe, non-invasive grooming and styling service. Some situations, however, call for postponing your visit or getting a diagnosis first:

Changes like these need a diagnosis first (podologist, dermatologist if needed), as they may indicate, for example, a fungal infection or damage to the plate. If in doubt, the stylist will refer you for the right assessment — this is a safety standard, not a complication.

What to expect
The result is visible right after the visit — hands are smooth, nails are even, cuticles are tidy. There's no "recovery period" and no healing time: this is a cosmetic grooming service, not a treatment that breaks the skin.
Men often say at first, "this probably isn't for me". After the first visit, they usually come back — because suddenly, in a photo or during a handshake, their hands simply look right. The secret is that a good men's manicure should be invisible as a manicure.

Aftercare
The most common questions aren't about the visit itself — they're about how to maintain the result: training, water, manual work. The rule is simple: we want the cuticles and hand skin to have a moment to recover, and the coating (if applied) to hold up well.
This is the most important habit: cuticle oil and hand cream maintain the result and prevent hangnails. Two moments a day are enough.
You can train right away. With a clear hybrid coat, the nail plate is additionally strengthened — minor stress affects it less.
Gardening, renovation, cleaning products — wear gloves. Detergents dry out cuticles and weaken the nail plate, regardless of your manicure.
This is the most common reason the result fades quickly. Instead of picking at hangnails, use cuticle oil and book another session. Your nails and cuticles will thank you.
With a clear hybrid coat, give it a few hours to settle. After that, water, the pool and the sauna are all unrestricted.
You can refresh the Japanese buffing effect at home with a soft buffer between visits — no products needed.
