Ear piercing

Ear piercing with a sterile, single-use needle — never a piercing gun. Titanium jewellery, a carefully chosen point, calm healing.

PIERCING / BODY MODIFICATIONS

Ear pierced with a needle
“calm healing”

A pierced ear is the simplest way to add character to your face — from a single classic lobe piercing to a carefully arranged composition of studs along the whole ear. But "piercing an ear" and "piercing an ear well" are two different things: what matters is sterility, the right tool and a well-placed point, because a badly positioned hole or infected cartilage can take months to heal.

At J'adore Instytut, ear piercing is carried out by a piercer. We pierce both the lobe and cartilage (helix, tragus, conch, daith), plan compositions (ear curation), and pierce children's lobes with parental consent. Below you'll find everything worth knowing before your visit — including why a needle is safer for the ear than a gun.

How it works

How it works

Piercing means creating a channel, not just making a "hole". The piercer first marks the point and checks it with you in the mirror, because how it looks and how calmly it heals depend not on the tool itself but on the exact position and angle. Then, in one smooth motion, they pass a sterile, single-use needle — opened in front of you — through the tissue. The needle is hollow and parts the tissue, creating a channel with even walls. Jewellery goes straight into this channel and keeps it open throughout healing, stopping it from closing over.

Healing doesn't mean the wound simply "closes up". Your body lines the channel from the inside with its own epidermis — this is epithelialisation, and it's exactly why the process takes longer than it looks from the outside. The earring sits in the wound for this entire time, so biocompatible material — nickel-free implant-grade titanium — isn't a luxury, it's a condition for calm healing; a cheap alloy can irritate the channel for weeks. Healing time depends on location: the well-vascularised lobe recovers much faster than cartilage, which is nourished from surrounding tissue. And two things stated plainly — the piercing itself is felt, briefly but genuinely, and we won't tell you otherwise; anyone under 18 is pierced only with the consent and in the presence of a parent or guardian.

Three layers of skin in cross-section: the epidermis at the surface, the dermis beneath it, and deepest of all the subcutaneous tissue. A sterile needle passes right through all of the layers and leaves a channel for the jewellery to sit in. We agree the site of the piercing before the treatment, based on your anatomy.
  1. Epidermisthe layer the needle enters through
  2. Dermisthe layer where the channel forms
  3. Subcutaneous tissuethe layer the needle exits on the far side of

Did you know: pierced ears are one of the oldest known forms of body adornment — even Ötzi, the Iceman found in an Alpine glacier over five thousand years ago, shows signs of pierced, stretched lobes. Technique and jewellery materials have changed; the idea of the ear as a place for adornment is older than most civilisations we know of.

Lobe or cartilage

Not the same piercing

The ear offers huge scope for creativity, but different parts behave completely differently. The key distinction is between the soft lobe and firm cartilage — this determines the technique, the healing, and how soon you'll be able to wear your favourite earring.

  1. Lobesoft, well-vascularised tissue with no cartilage. A classic, a great starting point, and ideal for stacks (several holes close together). Heals relatively quickly and calmly.
  2. Helixa piercing along the upper edge of the ear. The most popular cartilage piercing, and the base of most compositions.
  3. Tragusthe small flap of cartilage at the entrance to the ear canal. Striking, well liked, and requires precision.
  4. Conchthe central "shell" of the ear; a strong focal point in a composition, works well with larger jewellery.
  5. Daitha piercing through the inner fold of cartilage; a distinctive, "hidden" accent.

Did you know: cartilage has no blood vessels of its own — it's nourished "from the outside", by surrounding tissue. That's why the helix or tragus heal much more slowly and unpredictably than the soft, well-vascularised lobe. It's not about having a "worse" ear — it's biology, and it's the reason cartilage should never be rushed.

PIERCING / BODY MODIFICATIONS

Why a needle, not a gun

This is the most important decision when piercing an ear — and one that's often underestimated. A shopping-mall gun works fast and cheap, but it isn't a professional piercer's tool, especially not for cartilage.

  1. A needle cuts, a gun tearsA sterile, single-use needle creates a clean channel by parting the tissue. A gun forces the earring through — on firm cartilage, this means micro-trauma, longer healing, and a higher risk of an uneven hole.
  2. SterilityThe needle is single-use and discarded after piercing. Many guns can't be fully autoclave-sterilised, because they have plastic parts that come into contact with the wound.
  3. Precision of placementWith a needle, the piercer places the hole exactly where planned — at the angle and in the spot that will sit well. A gun limits both angle and control.
  4. We never pierce cartilage with a gunHelix, tragus, conch, daith — needle only. This is a firm rule of safe piercing.
Red flag: a gun for cartilage and "we'll pierce it right now"

🚩 If anyone offers to pierce your helix or other cartilage with a gun, take that as a sign to walk away. The same goes for a missing single-use needle opened in front of you, no gloves, no information about the jewellery material, or an unclear origin for the earring. You're entitled to ask what tool is used, whether the needle is single-use, and what the jewellery is made of. A good studio will answer without hesitation.

Women's and men's ear piercing

What differs

For her

Ear piercing for women — precision that lasts

Ear piercing for women is most often part of a wider face-framing style — from a single lobe piercing to a full, considered composition (ear curation) running along the whole ear. We choose points to suit the shape of your ear, your hairstyle and the jewellery you want to wear day to day.

The areas we support

  1. the classic lobe and stacks — several holes close together on the lobe;
  2. helix, tragus, conch, daith as composition accents;
  3. ear curation — a layout with a golden centre of gravity and rhythm;
  4. staged planning for future, decorative earrings (once fully healed).
For him

Ear piercing for men — discreet, lasting, no compromises

Ear piercing for men is usually a minimalist, strong accent — a single lobe or helix piercing in discreet titanium. The aim: character without excess, jewellery that sits well under short hair and doesn't get in the way day to day. For the full range of body modifications (septum, eyebrow, nipple) → **body piercing**.

The areas we support

  1. single lobe — a classic, fastest healing;
  2. helix — a striking, "raw" accent on the upper edge of the ear;
  3. discreet titanium in a muted finish;
  4. zero downtime — you return to your day straight after the visit.

Did you know: the sterile needle we use for ear piercing follows the exact same philosophy as any other body piercing — single-use, opened in front of you, discarded after one use. Only the location and the composition plan change.

What to expect during your visit

  1. Discussion and assessment of your earthe piercer looks at your anatomy, asks about your health (tendency to keloids, diabetes, blood-thinning medication) and agrees what and where you want pierced.
  2. Marking the pointswe mark the spot(s) and show you in the mirror. You give your approval only once you're happy with the layout — this is your chance for adjustments.
  3. Sterile preparationskin disinfection, gloves, a single-use needle opened in front of you, and autoclave-sterilised titanium jewellery.
  4. Piercing with the needlequick and precise, each hole a brief moment. The lobe feels gentler, cartilage a little more intense.
  5. Fitting the jewellery and aftercare instructionswe fit titanium jewellery with room for swelling, and walk you through aftercare step by step.

Contraindications

When to postpone

Some contraindications are permanent, and some are temporary — in that case, we simply postpone the piercing until the situation has passed. What matters most is that the piercer knows about your health before the procedure.

We don't perform it
  • A tendency to form keloid scarscartilage is particularly prone to this; a history of keloids calls for extra caution, and often a medical consultation.
  • Diabetes(especially poorly controlled) — slower, poorer healing and a higher risk of infection.
  • Clotting disorders, haemophilia, blood-thinning medicationneed prior assessment by a doctor.
  • Reduced immunity / immunosuppressionlonger healing and a higher risk of complications.
  • Active infection, inflammation or skin damage on the earwe wait until it has healed.
  • Chronic conditions and allergies(for example, to metals) — we discuss these individually before piercing.
  • Childrenwe pierce the lobe only, and only with the consent and in the presence of a parent or guardian; we don't pierce cartilage in children.

From the piercer

I always ask about two things: a tendency to keloids and blood-thinning medication. The first matters mainly with cartilage, the second with any piercing. This isn't a formality — it decides whether piercing now is even a good idea, or whether it's better to talk to a doctor first.

This isn't an exhaustive list. We'll discuss your health, medication and any previous healing experiences individually before your visit.

Healing

What to expect

Most importantly: the lobe and cartilage heal at completely different speeds. The lobe is soft and well-vascularised — it recovers relatively quickly. Cartilage is nourished less efficiently, so the helix, tragus or conch need far more time and patience — often many months.

  1. Faza 1.first few daysswelling and tenderness; cleanse with saline, don't touch the jewellery
  2. Faza 2.first few weeksthe lobe settles down noticeably; cartilage still sensitive
  3. Faza 3.several weeksthe lobe is usually practically healed; cartilage still has a way to go
  4. Faza 4.many monthscartilage fully healed — only now can you fully swap the jewellery
The most common mistake with cartilage: "it's been healing for a few weeks now, so I'll fit a decorative earring." Too soon. A helix can look healed on the outside while the channel is still forming inside. Patience with cartilage is the best investment — rushing leads to irritation and setbacks.
From the piercer

What's normal in the first few days

  • mild redness, warmth and slight swelling around the hole;
  • a little tenderness to the touch, especially with cartilage;
  • thin, clear discharge that dries into a "crust" — part of healing, not infection.

Healing speed is individual — it depends on the location, your health, and how you look after the piercing. If anything worries you (increasing pain, pus-like discharge, a hot area), get in touch with the studio.

Aftercare

What to do, what to avoid

A fresh piercing is a wound — throughout healing, we want to keep it clean, dry and undisturbed. The main rule: the less you touch it, the better. Here are the key habits for the healing period.

  1. Cleansing with saline

    regularly, gently

    Clean the hole with saline / a piercing aftercare solution, following the studio's instructions. This softens dried discharge and keeps the channel clean. Don't use harsh spirits or hydrogen peroxide — they dry out and irritate the skin.

  2. Turning the jewellery

    DO NOT turn it

    An old myth. Twisting the earring tears healing tissue and prolongs the whole process. Leave the jewellery alone — clean around it, but let the earring stay put.

  3. Sleeping on the ear

    sleep on the other side

    Pressure on a fresh piercing (especially cartilage) means pain, swelling and uneven healing. Throughout healing, sleep on the other side, ideally on a smooth, clean pillowcase.

  4. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, lake

    avoid until healed

    Water in a swimming pool, jacuzzi or open water carries bacteria and chlorine straight into an open wound. Hold off on swimming until the piercing has healed.

  5. Sauna and steam rooms

    skip these at first

    High temperatures and sweat encourage irritation in a fresh piercing. Save the sauna and hammam for after healing.

  6. Cosmetics and hair products

    be careful around the hole

    Hairspray, powders and rich creams shouldn't come into contact with a fresh piercing. Take care when brushing your hair or pulling clothes over your head, so nothing catches on the earring.

Frequently asked questions

  1. QuestionIs the earring included in the price?
    AnswerYes — the listed price is the price you pay. It covers the consultation, marking the spot, the sterile piercing, an implant-grade titanium earring and aftercare guidance. For two lobes, two earrings are included. The only surcharge is if you choose a more decorative piece instead of the starter one — you then pay the difference, up to 80 PLN each, depending on the model. We quote the amount before the piercing, never after. Nothing else is added at the studio. We quote separately only for a downsize (shortening the jewellery) a few weeks into healing — that is a separate, later visit.
  2. QuestionDo you pierce with a needle or a gun?
    AnswerOnly with a sterile, single-use needle — even for lobes. We don't use a gun, because it forces the earring through with less control over placement, and it can't be fully sterilised. For cartilage, a needle is an absolute rule.
  3. QuestionIs the jewellery safe for the skin?
    AnswerWe fit implant-grade titanium at first — lightweight, biologically inert and nickel-free, avoiding the most common allergen in cheap earrings. This minimises the risk of irritation during healing.
  4. QuestionDoes it hurt a lot?
    AnswerEach piercing is a brief moment. The lobe feels gentler, cartilage a little more intense, but it's over quickly. Most people say they were more nervous than it was worth being.

Information. Ear piercing is a body-adornment service — piercing breaks the skin's integrity, so we carry it out under a sterile protocol, with a single-use needle and titanium jewellery. It is not a medical treatment or an injection of any preparation. If you have a chronic illness, a clotting disorder, a tendency to form keloid scars, diabetes or reduced immunity, a prior consultation with a doctor is recommended. We pierce children's ears only on the lobe, and only with the consent and in the presence of a parent or guardian.
