When it's worth it — indications

  • An unwanted tattoo — your style, career or simply your preferences have changed.
  • Lightening for a cover-up — when you want a new design and the old one needs fading first, so your tattoo artist has a cleaner base.
  • A blurred or discoloured tattoo — outlines have spread, colour has shifted to blue-grey or brown.
  • An amateur tattoo — often easier to remove than professional work.

A tattoo that was a decision — and the decision to remove it

Men talk about this less openly, but the questions are similar: a tattoo from a different chapter of life that now stands out at the wrong moments. A job interview, an important meeting, a situation where appearance matters. Or simply an old design that no longer represents who you are.
The Q-Switch Nd:YAG laser breaks pigment down into microscopic fragments, which your lymphatic system gradually clears. The process itself is the same regardless of gender — but what typically differs in men is a larger tattoo area, darker and more deeply set ink (professional work done with high precision and saturation), and skin and lifestyle factors that affect the session schedule.

Men's skin and laser tattoo removal

Men's skin is on average thicker and structurally different from women's — higher collagen density, more active sebaceous glands, and denser hair growth in some areas. For tattoo removal, this can mean pigment sits deeper, which may add one or two extra sessions compared with a similar design on thinner skin. This isn't a drawback — it's a factor we account for when planning your schedule at consultation.
If your tattoo is somewhere you regularly shave (upper arm, neck, chest, calf), there's one simple rule: avoid shaving that area for 7–14 days after each session. Skin after laser treatment is sensitive, and any mechanical irritation — razor, trimmer — can disrupt healing. After that, you're back to your normal routine with no restrictions.

Physical activity and treatment — specific guidelines

Strength training, running, contact sports — any activity involving heavy sweating or a risk of injury to the treated area calls for a short break after each session. Avoid intense exercise for the first 24–48 hours — sweat combined with your skin's fresh laser reaction increases the risk of irritation and infection. After that, you can return to your full training plan.
If your tattoo is on your arm or chest, protect the area from friction (clothing, equipment) for the first 2–3 days. No specific activity is permanently off-limits — the caution applies only to the first few days after each session.

Cover-up — lightening for a new design

If your goal isn't full removal but preparing a base for a new, better design, that's a scenario we know well. Lightening an old design enough to give your tattoo artist a clean base usually takes 2–4 sessions. After that, your tattoo artist has much more freedom when designing the new piece — and the final result is significantly better than a cover-up without laser preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Will it be obvious afterwards that I've had something done to my skin?
Immediately after a session, your skin will be red and possibly slightly swollen for 1–3 days — this is a normal reaction. Most of this settles within a week. Between sessions, your tattoo simply looks like a tattoo in the process of fading — no one would tell the difference from natural ageing. We only document your progress for you, in a closed treatment room.
Can I shave the tattooed area after treatment?
Not straight away — avoid shaving the treated area for 7–14 days after each session. Your skin is sensitive, and mechanical irritation can disrupt healing. After that, you're back to your normal routine with no restrictions. If your tattoo is somewhere you shave regularly, we'll schedule sessions so the break doesn't clash with anything important to you.
Can I go to the gym between sessions?
Yes — with no restrictions, once you mean the time between sessions (i.e. after healing). The only break needed is 24–48 hours immediately after treatment. Heavy sweating during training can irritate freshly treated skin, so treat the first day after a session as recovery time, and resume training from the second day.
I have a large sleeve — can part of it be removed?
Yes — the laser can be targeted precisely, allowing us to selectively remove or lighten a specific section of your design without touching the rest of the sleeve. This requires precision and a detailed discussion of scope at consultation, but it's technically very achievable. We can also lighten an old sleeve to prepare for a new, more cohesive design.
How large a tattoo can be removed in one session?
There's no strict size limit — but larger areas may need several sessions, for one simple reason: your body needs time to clear the pigment, and treating too large an area too intensively in one go extends recovery. In practice, we divide larger designs into zones and treat them in stages, which is both safer and more effective. We'll set out the plan at consultation, after assessing the full design.
