Why your jawline has "softened" — and why it isn't your fault
Through your twenties, your face holds its shape because collagen in the skin and the fascia beneath it stay elastic — keeping the tissue in place. After thirty, collagen production drops, connective tissue loses tension, and gravity takes over. The effect is always the same: the facial contour loses its definition. The chin blurs into the neck, the jawline softens, and the cheeks drop lower.
On top of that, there's often a build-up of fat beneath the chin — anatomically, this is a spot where fat accumulates readily in men, regardless of overall body composition. That's why you can have 10% body fat and still see a "second chin" in profile. This isn't about discipline — it's about anatomy and genetics.
What NIR thermolifting actually does — no fairy tales
NIR stands for "near-infrared". The device emits energy that passes through the epidermis and reaches deeper layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, where it converts into controlled heat. That heat does two things at once:
- It remodels existing collagen — collagen fibres contract under heat, giving immediate tissue tightening. The "tightening" effect is visible right after the session.
- It stimulates new collagen production — for several weeks after the session, the body produces new fibres where the heat stimulus was applied. This second, gradual effect is often stronger than the immediate one.
- It may reduce local fat tissue — thermal energy at the right temperature also affects adipocytes (fat cells), which can help reduce volume beneath the chin.
In terms of facial contour: the tissue beneath the skin becomes firmer and more taut, which can sharpen the jawline and reduce a double chin. This isn't surgery — the results are subtler than liposuction or a surgical lift — but for anyone not ready for an invasive procedure, it's often the only option that actually changes anything.
NIR thermolifting vs other options — what to choose, and when
There's one question that always comes up: "how is this different from other treatments, or from surgery?" Here it is, straight:
NIR thermolifting
Contouring without surgical intervention
- Zero downtime — you leave and carry on as normal
- A gradual, natural-looking result
- Works on skin firmness and contour at the same time
- Can be repeated, with results that build up over time
Surgical lift / liposuction
An intervention with an immediate, lasting effect
- Dramatic contour change possible in a single session
- Permanent removal of excess fat or skin
NIR thermolifting suits anyone who notices the problem and wants to address it but isn't ready for surgery, or simply doesn't want a break from work and daily life. If ptosis (sagging) is significant, your doctor will say so directly during the consultation, and point you towards surgery or a combination of methods.
What the treatment looks like in practice
Before you decide whether this is for you, it helps to know what actually happens. No embellishment.
- 01
Consultation
An assessment of your facial contour, skin condition and subcutaneous tissue. Your doctor or cosmetologist tells you plainly what to expect, and how many sessions make sense.
- 02
Preparation
A conductive gel is applied to the skin. No anaesthetic or special preparation on your part is usually needed.
- 03
Treatment
The device head moves across specific areas — jawline, chin, neck. You'll feel heat, ranging from pleasant to intense depending on the depth being treated. Your specialist monitors and adjusts throughout.
- 04
After the treatment
Your skin may look slightly flushed and feel warm — this fades within a few hours. You can head to a meeting, go back to work, or hit the gym. No restrictions.
- 05
Results
Part of the result is visible right away (tightening). The rest builds over 2–4 weeks as the body produces new collagen. A series of sessions is usually recommended for the best result.
When results are best — and what limits them
NIR thermolifting isn't a miracle solution for everyone in every situation. Results are usually more pronounced when:
- The problem is skin laxity and loss of contour — not a large amount of fat
- Skin quality is still relatively good (a "strengthening" effect is easier to achieve than a "repair" effect)
- You complete a series of sessions rather than a single one — results build up over time
- You combine it with other methods, if your specialist recommends this
If the main issue is a large amount of fat beneath the chin (visible clearly in profile regardless of head position), thermotherapy alone may not be enough — this is worth discussing during the consultation. A good specialist won't promise results that aren't achievable — they'll point you towards a combination of methods, or tell you that something different is needed in your case.
Combine with other methods — when it's worth it
NIR thermolifting works best combined with methods that complement it from a different angle. This isn't compulsory — but if you want maximum results, it helps to know what pairs well:
Mesotherapy
Delivers nourishing and stimulating substances directly into deeper skin layers — supports tissue regeneration after thermal stimulation and can boost collagen production.
Botox (botulinum toxin in the masseter)
If a heavy jawline comes from an enlarged masseter muscle (for example with bruxism), relaxing the masseter with Botox can work alongside thermolifting to slim the contour.
HIFU firming treatments
HIFU works at different tissue depths than NIR — combining them can cover multiple layers and give a more comprehensive lifting effect.
