Sports / therapeutic massage (deep tissue) for women

Your body trains too — even when you'd rather not see it

Contrary to popular belief, sports massage for women isn't a niche service — runners, and women doing strength training, CrossFit or yoga face exactly the same overload issues. The work is just as deep, and pressure is always matched to you and your threshold, never forced.

When it's worth it — indications

  • After training and competition — recovery, faster release of tension and soreness, lighter muscles.
  • Overload and stiffness — a bound-up neck, tight back, tight calves, stiff hips from sitting and the gym.
  • Trigger points — painful "knots" in the muscle that limit movement or refer pain.
  • Restricted range of motion — when muscles are so tense they shorten and restrict movement at a joint.
  • Injury prevention — regular work with overload for active people (running, gym, sport).
  • Before competition — a shorter, activating session that prepares muscles for exertion.
  • Desk work + sport — a typical combination: a sedentary day and intense evening training.

The areas we work on

  1. calves, hips and the IT band after running;
  2. neck, shoulders and back — desk work plus training;
  3. glutes and the posterior chain — overload from squats and running;
  4. post-exertion recovery and preparing muscles before competition.

Your body trains too — even when you'd rather not see it

The female muscular system recovers more slowly than you might think. Lower testosterone levels, higher sensitivity to cortisol, natural joint hypermobility — all of this means tension builds up subtly, without obvious pain. Right up until the day your knee gives out at the five-kilometre mark, or your shoulder locks up with every pull-up. Sports massage for women is therapeutic work adapted to these specifics: deep, precise, focused on the zones that overload fastest in women — the IT band, the piriformis, the pelvic floor when running, the shoulder rotators from strength training.

Zones that need particular attention in women

If you run, you probably know the feeling: pain on the outside of the knee after 8–10 kilometres, tight calves, tight fascia, sometimes a stitch near the groin. These are classic running-related overload issues rooted in female biomechanics: wider hips mean a wider knee angle (the Q angle), which puts more strain on the IT band and the patellofemoral joint than in men. One well-placed deep tissue session in these areas can remove pain that's followed you through a month of training.
If you do strength training, tension typically builds in the trapezius, the shoulder rotators, and flexed hips (a result of long hours at a desk before training). Manual work restores the full range of motion that shapes your technique in deadlifts, bench press and squats.
If you combine yoga, Pilates or dance, fascia and flexibility are key for you. Sports massage releases fascial adhesions in a way stretching alone can't achieve.

No "sporty" label required — a massage that works for every lifestyle

You don't need to compete in a triathlon to benefit from sports massage. Women who spend 8–10 hours at a computer and go for a run once a week often carry more accumulated tension than professional athletes — the body spends most of its time in a shortened position, and a single burst of exertion acts as a trigger. Your physiotherapist selects techniques and pressure depth individually, matched to your body and your goal: an intensive preparatory series before a half marathon looks different from a monthly maintenance session for an active woman working in an office.

When it's especially worth coming in

  • You run regularly and feel tension in the IT band, calves or plantar fascia
  • You do strength training and notice restricted range of motion during squats, deadlifts or bench press
  • You have recurring lower back or sacroiliac pain
  • Before a competition or after an intense training block
  • You sit for long periods and move rarely — your muscles need this work too

Frequently asked questions

Is sports massage suitable for women who aren't professional athletes?
Absolutely — and this is one of the most common misconceptions. Sports massage is a soft-tissue technique, not an elite ritual reserved for marathon runners. If your body is active — even three times a week at yoga, running or the gym — it accumulates tension that sports massage releases faster and more effectively than almost anything else.
Can I have a sports massage while pregnant or breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, sports massage in the standard deep tissue protocol isn't performed — especially in the first trimester and with front-lying positioning. Talk to us — we'll adapt techniques to your situation or suggest a safe alternative. During breastfeeding, massage is safe; just be mindful of positioning and any discomfort around the chest area.
Can I use retinol or acids in my skincare while having sports massages?
Sports massage works on muscle and fascial tissue, not the epidermis — it doesn't interfere with your facial skincare. If the massage includes the neck and décolletage area, avoid strong exfoliating products on those areas immediately afterwards (the skin is more flushed). Elsewhere on the body, there are no restrictions.
Will I see visible changes to my figure after sports massage?
Sports massage isn't a body-contouring treatment — it's muscle and fascial therapy. You may, however, notice that your body feels "lighter" and more upright: when the muscles alongside the spine and the hips are released, posture improves, and that visually changes proportions. Any effect on your figure is a side benefit, not the main goal.
Can sports massage be combined with other treatments at J'adore?
Yes, and we're happy to advise on this. Kinesiotaping is a natural addition — applied after the massage, it stabilises the areas worked on and extends the effect. Lymphatic drainage works well as a follow-up after intense training blocks, when the body retains fluid. Cupping therapy intensifies fascial work in specific areas.
