The postpartum abdomen — stretch marks, laxity, fat
When and how to address the postpartum abdomen — a proven step-by-step programme.

The postpartum abdomen comes up in every consultation. Stretch marks, skin laxity, excess fat, a caesarean scar — all of this can be improved. But not straight away. The postpartum period calls for caution and a solid plan.
When can you start treatments?
Returning to treatments after birth takes time. Your body needs to recover, and tissues need to heal. Below is a rough timeline of what's safe, and when.
Immediately after birth — home care: a vitamin C or retinol cream, oils (rosehip, argan), gentle circular abdominal massage
6 weeks after a natural birth — abdominal massage, lymphatic drainage, non-ablative treatments
6 weeks after a caesarean section — gentle massage only; the C-section scar needs to heal fully first
3 months after birth — most body treatments: radiofrequency (RF), carboxytherapy
6 months after birth — laser treatments for stretch marks, intensive RF
After you stop breastfeeding — lipolysis and cryolipolysis treatments
Stretch marks — how are they treated?
Postpartum stretch marks are one of the harder skin changes to treat. With a regular series of well-chosen treatments, though, they can become far less visible. The key is matching the method to the colour of the stretch marks: pink (fresher) ones respond differently to white (older) ones.
Abdominal skin laxity
After pregnancy, abdominal skin often loses its elasticity. Stretched collagen and elastin fibres need a trigger to start rebuilding. RF thermolifting treatments (radiofrequency) are among the most commonly used non-surgical methods for improving skin firmness.
Fat around the abdomen
Once you stop breastfeeding, you can consider treatments that reduce localised fat deposits. This applies mainly to the lower abdomen and sides — areas where postpartum fat often persists despite diet and exercise.
The caesarean section scar
A C-section scar calls for patience. At least a year should pass after the operation before any aesthetic treatments. During that time, regular care helps prepare the tissue for future treatments.
Scar massage — a few minutes daily with your fingers or a cupping tool; loosens adhesions, improves blood flow
Silicone (gel or sheet) — applied regularly for several months; flattens the scar and reduces discolouration
Fractional microneedling RF — from a year after the operation; remodels the scar's structure, improving its texture and colour
Vascular treatments — reduce redness and discolouration in the scar
The postpartum abdomen programme — timeline
The plan below is a sample timeline for treatments after a natural birth. After a caesarean section, the laser stage and intensive treatments are postponed by a few months.
Immediately: retinol or vitamin C cream, rosehip oil, gentle circular massage
6 weeks (natural birth): lymphatic drainage — series of 4–6 sessions; first carboxytherapy sessions for stretch marks
3 months: firming RF for the abdomen — series of 6–8 sessions; continued carboxytherapy
6 months: fractional laser for stretch marks — series of 4–6 sessions; fractional microneedling RF for deeper stretch marks
After breastfeeding ends: cryolipolysis, if localised fat deposits persist
