What succinic acid actually is
Succinic acid is a small-molecule organic acid. In cosmetic chemistry it belongs to the PHK (poly-hydroxy keto acids) family, though in practice it's often treated separately — its action profile is different enough that grouping it with AHAs would be misleading. It's been known for a long time. Its name comes from amber (succinum), from which it was first isolated in the 17th century. But its real potential in skincare was understood much later.
What sets it apart from other cosmetic acids? Mainly size and origin. The succinic acid molecule is small, but not as small as glycolic acid — it penetrates the skin gradually, not instantly.
