What men look for in the lip area

The questions men bring to consultations sound similar: "One side sits higher than the other", "My lip lost its shape after surgery", "My lips have gone pale, like my skin — the whole line is disappearing". Men rarely say "I want PMU" outright. More often it comes up during a consultation, once it becomes clear this is the tool that solves exactly that problem.

The most common reasons men choose lip PMU:

• Contour asymmetry — one side sits slightly higher, lower or further back. Especially visible in photos and during direct eye contact.
• A fading or disappearing contour — the lips blend into the surrounding skin, with no structure or definition. It creates the impression that something is missing from the face.
• Discolouration and uneven colour — usually darker or bluish areas at the corners or along the lip line. In men, this is often the result of sun exposure or a naturally darker skin tone.
• A scar or altered shape after injury or surgery — PMU can visually even out the line and restore lost pigmentation.

PMU versus makeup — two different things

The most common objection we hear: "That's for women." This misunderstanding comes from years of PMU being associated mainly with bold, colourful permanent makeup. But the male version of lip PMU is a different tool with a different goal:

That's why we use neutral, earthy tones for men, often limited to line correction rather than a full colour fill. The final result should look like your lips on a good day, not lips from an advert.

What the treatment involves

Before we start anything, there's a consultation — and this is where most of the work happens. We check symmetry, discuss what specifically bothers you, and choose the tone. If you have any doubts about the result, we draw a test line with a pencil first, and you see it before anyone touches your skin.

   Consultation and mapping

   We assess symmetry, discuss your goal, and match pigment to your skin tone and natural lip colour. We sketch the line — you approve the shape before we start.

2. 02

   Anaesthesia

   Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. We wait for it to take effect — the treatment is carried out comfortably, never rushed.

3. 03

   Pigment application

   Precise work along the contour or the chosen area. The needle follows the lip border — millimetre-level work, not "colouring in the whole thing".

4. 04

   Verification and review

   After the first pass, we assess evenness and colour. Any corrections happen in the same session.

5. 05

   Healing and follow-up

   The skin dries over a few days — the colour may look more intense at first. The true result shows after 4–6 weeks. A follow-up visit lets us fill in any gaps in the pigment.

Colour and tone — how we choose it

This is where most men are surprised — pigment selection isn't intuitive. The colour of the pigment in the vial isn't the colour you'll see on healed skin. Pigment passes through the epidermis, interacts with your skin's natural undertone, and heals into a shade that can differ substantially from the starting colour.

That's why, for men's lip PMU, we take into account:

• Skin tone and undertone — cool (pink-blue), neutral, or warm (yellowish)?
• Natural lip colour — very pale, red, or bluish?
• The discoloured area — is the discolouration warm or cool in tone? We correct it with a pigment of the opposite tone, to neutralise it.
• Goal — reinforcement and correction vs. discolouration correction vs. contour reconstruction after injury.

Does it hurt, and how long does it last

Two questions men ask first. Honestly:

Pain — the lip area is sensitive, but the treatment is carried out under local anaesthesia. Most people feel light tingling or pressure, not pain. The corners of the mouth can be more sensitive. If you have an unusually low pain threshold, tell us beforehand — we'll take that into account.

Results last — PMU isn't a permanent tattoo. Lip PMU pigments sit shallower than tattoo ink, and for many people they naturally fade within a few years. That's an advantage: if you don't love it, the effect fades on its own. You touch it up when you want to — not because you have to. In practice, many men come back every few years simply because they like the result.

When lip PMU isn't a good idea

Lip PMU isn't for everyone, and a good specialist will tell you this directly during the consultation. There are situations where we postpone or don't perform the treatment:

• Active cold sores — the treatment can trigger a recurrence. Anyone with a history of cold sores needs preventive measures (discuss this with your doctor before your visit).
• Skin undergoing dermatological treatment around the lips — medication affecting skin regeneration can disrupt healing.
• Inflammation or active skin lesions in the treatment area.
• Certain systemic conditions or medications — a topic to discuss during consultation, not to hide.

If you have any concerns, tell us. Being turned down at consultation isn't a refusal to help — it's professionalism. Better to have the treatment when your body is ready than to risk spoiling the result or a complication.
