Where they come from — a mechanism that works for years
A pigment spot is an area of skin where melanocytes — the cells that produce melanin — have started working overtime and show no sign of slowing down. A tan is also melanin, but even and temporary. A pigment spot is overproduction concentrated in one place, and it often stays for good.
The mechanism is simple: UV radiation damages skin cell DNA. The body responds by producing melanin as a "shield" — hence the darkening after sun exposure. But every instance of damage leaves a mark in cellular memory. After enough exposures, a melanocyte starts working on its own: it produces melanin without any UV trigger. That's how a spot forms that doesn't fade come winter.

Types of hyperpigmentation — not all the same
Not every dark spot is sun-induced hyperpigmentation — and not every type of hyperpigmentation responds the same way to the same treatment. Before you take action, it helps to know what you're dealing with.
- Sun spots (lentigines) — flat, clearly defined, brown. Most common on the face, hands, décolletage and arms. The result of years of UV exposure. They respond well to peels and lasers.
- Melasma — less regular, blurred, symmetrical patches on the face. More common in women, but it does occur in men — especially with prolonged sun exposure. It requires a different protocol than ordinary spots.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark marks left by acne, scratches, cuts. It worsens with sun exposure. In men, it often appears around the chin and neck.

Acids exfoliate the layers of the epidermis containing excess melanin. Depth and composition are adjusted to the type of hyperpigmentation and skin phototype. Results can appear after just a few sessions — skin may become more even and brighter. Recovery time depends on how deep the peel goes.

Laser and IPL
Energy pulses target melanin — it absorbs the light and fragments, and the body clears the remains through the lymphatic system. For many men with deeper-set spots, laser methods can deliver noticeable results. Several sessions are usually needed.

Peels — why this is a good place to start
For a man just starting out with salon-based cosmetology, a chemical peel has several advantages. It doesn't require a long downtime — depending on the depth of the treatment, skin may look slightly pink for a few hours to a few days, but there's usually no need to hide away. Results build gradually — there's no sudden change in appearance that needs explaining. And the protocol is flexible — you can start with gentle acids and gradually increase intensity as your skin adjusts.
The most commonly used substances are glycolic, mandelic, lactobionic and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) — each with a different action profile and depth. The choice depends on the type of hyperpigmentation, skin phototype and skin tolerance. There's no one-size-fits-all answer.
Combining methods — why a protocol works better than a single treatment
Sun-induced hyperpigmentation in a man over 40, built up over two decades, rarely disappears after one treatment. Good protocols combine methods — which is exactly why a series-based approach brings better results for many people than a single intensive session.
Peel + vitamin C mesotherapy

SPF — the one thing you can't skip
You can spend time and money on a series of treatments and undo the results in a single summer without sunscreen. SPF isn't a label suggestion — it's a condition for the effectiveness of every method used for hyperpigmentation. It works both ways: it blocks the new UV trigger that reactivates melanocytes, and it gives skin the time it needs to recover properly after a treatment.
- SPF 50+ every day — not only on sunny days. UV passes through clouds and glass.
- Apply after washing your face — the best time is the last step of your morning routine, before leaving the house.
- On your hands too — especially if spots appear on the backs of your hands. It's one of the most commonly overlooked areas.
- Reapply during prolonged exposure — after 2–3 hours spent outdoors.
- A hat — at the beach, by the water, during outdoor work. Sunscreen alone can't replace physical protection during very intense exposure.
