BHA vs AHA — how salicylic acid really differs from mandelic acid

Both exfoliate — but one stays on the surface, and the other travels to where sebum collects. The difference is chemical. The effects on skin are clearly visible.

Acids have firmly entered mainstream skincare — and brought plenty of confusion with them. BHA, AHA, salicylic, mandelic, glycolic, lactic… product labels often list them in the same breath, as if they were one category with different names. They aren't.

BHA and AHA are two distinct classes of ingredients. They exfoliate skin in different ways, reach different layers, and suit different concerns. Confusing them isn't a trivial mistake. The right acid for acne-prone skin can change a great deal. The wrong one can irritate, or simply do nothing.

In this article, we break the difference down from first principles — from chemistry through mechanism of action to specific indications. No structural formulas. Just answers to the questions that actually matter on skin.

One letter, two entirely different worlds

Let's start with the basics — understanding the terms helps explain the difference in action. AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acids, BHA for beta hydroxy acid. The difference in name reflects a difference in chemical structure. That structure decides how each one behaves on contact with skin.

There's one key difference, and it's fundamental: BHA is fat-soluble. AHA is water-soluble. That sentence sounds like a chemical detail, but in practice it explains everything — where the acid travels, which skin type it suits, and which concerns it can address. BHA handles fat, so it reaches wherever fat collects. AHA works on the surface, so it addresses whatever happens right at the top of the skin.

  • AHA (alpha hydroxy acids): glycolic, mandelic, lactic, citric, malic. They work on the surface of the skin — loosening the bonds between dead skin cells to help them shed more easily. They act mainly within the stratum corneum.
  • BHA (beta hydroxy acid): essentially one player — salicylic acid. It's fat-soluble, so it penetrates through the sebum layer and travels deep into the pore opening. Of all the common skincare acids, it's the only one that reaches where blackheads form and bacteria multiply.

Oily and acne-prone skin — BHA takes the lead

If your skin is oily, prone to clogged pores, blackheads or breakouts, BHA is likely the acid you need. The logic is simple: the pore is filled with sebum, and salicylic acid is drawn to fat — so it physically reaches the source of the problem.

Inside the pore, BHA loosens built-up keratinocytes — dead skin cells mixed with sebum — and helps them clear out. That's why, with regular use, pores can appear smaller over time. Not because they've "closed" (pores have no muscles), but because they're simply less congested. Salicylic acid also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it the only exfoliating acid that calms redness around breakouts at the same time.

Dry, mature skin with hyperpigmentation — this is where AHA works

AHA targets a completely different address. Because it's water-soluble, it doesn't travel deep into the pore — but it handles everything happening on the surface: uneven texture, hyperpigmentation, dullness and roughness. These are acids designed for skin that doesn't need "unclogging" — it needs freshness, radiance and a smoother surface.

AHA works by loosening the bonds between desmosomes — the protein bridges that hold together cells in the stratum corneum. As these bonds weaken, old cells shed more easily, revealing "fresher" skin underneath. This matters for mature skin. With age, the natural cell turnover cycle slows down significantly, and dead cells linger longer, giving a greyish, tired appearance.

Among AHAs, it's worth knowing at least two main forms — because they're not identical:

Glycolic acid

The smallest molecule among AHAs

  • Penetrates deepest into the epidermis among AHAs
  • Stronger exfoliating and brightening effect
  • Stimulates collagen synthesis at higher concentrations
  • Can irritate more strongly — skin needs time to adjust

Mandelic acid

The largest molecule among common AHAs

  • Larger molecule = slower penetration = gentler action
  • Well tolerated by sensitive and vascular skin
  • Recommended as a first introduction to acids
  • Mild antibacterial properties

Head-to-head comparison — your skin decides

Despite the difference in chemistry, in practice the choice between BHA and AHA comes down to one question: what is your skin's main concern? Clogged pores and oiliness — BHA. Dullness, dryness, uneven texture — AHA. And what if it's both?

BHA — salicylic acid

Combination skin is a case where the answer can be complex. The central part of the face (forehead, nose, chin) may need BHA, because pores there tend to clog. The cheeks may need AHA, because they're drier, duller, and possibly marked by hyperpigmentation. In this case, good practice means using both — but in different zones or different routines — rather than forcing a single choice.

Can you use BHA and AHA together?

Yes — and it often makes sense. But "together" needs some clarification, because this is where excess irritation can easily happen.

    One acid at a time — to start with

    If you're just starting out with acids, let your skin get used to one first. Introduce it slowly — 2–3 times a week, in the evening. Watch how your skin responds for at least 3–4 weeks.

    Combining — on different days or in different products

    Once your skin is accustomed, you can alternate BHA and AHA — one evening BHA, the next AHA. Or use a product that combines both acids in a tested, ready-made formula.

    Same evening — but only with care

    Applying both acids one after another on the same evening only makes sense at lower concentrations, and only once your skin is ready for it. It doesn't add up benefits — combined exfoliation isn't always the sum of combined results.

    SPF in the morning — always

    Acids increase skin's sensitivity to UV radiation. After a night with acid, morning SPF isn't optional — it's essential. Without it, part of the results can quickly reverse.

When an acid really works — and when it isn't enough

Acids — both BHA and AHA — are highly effective skincare tools. Used regularly and matched correctly to your skin, they can meaningfully improve texture, reduce the visibility of pores, brighten hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone for many people. These are real results, not marketing promises.

But there's a limit that home skincare doesn't cross — and it's worth knowing where it lies. Acids in cosmetic products work at concentrations and pH levels suited for safe daily use. In-salon peels operate under completely different conditions: higher concentrations, controlled pH, precise exposure time, and the ability to combine ingredients in protocols that can't be replicated at home. That's why a single salon session is often described as equivalent to weeks of home routine — not because home products "don't work", but because a salon treatment does the same job, only more intensively and more precisely.
