Two problems, two tools
To understand the choice, you first need to understand what a scar actually "is". Skin at the site of an injury heals differently from healthy tissue — it loses melanocytes (the cells responsible for colour), its collagen fibre structure changes (which affects texture), or both at once. Hence the two dimensions of the problem:
- Colour — the scar is lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation) than the surrounding skin. Visible even on a flat, smooth surface.
- Texture — the scar is indented, raised, uneven or firmer than the surrounding tissue. Visible even when the colour matches perfectly.
Laser
changes texture and stimulates tissue remodelling
- atrophic scars (acne, chickenpox)
- hypertrophic and keloid scars (selected types)
- unevenness, indentations, thickened areas
- hyperpigmented scars (darker than the skin)
PMU camouflage
masks the colour difference between scar and skin
- hypopigmented scars (lighter, white)
- stretch marks in the "white", mature phase
- scars from surgery, caesarean sections
- flat scars with an even texture
How to identify what your scar needs
Before choosing a method, ask yourself two questions in front of a mirror — ideally in good, natural light:

Look at the colour
Is the scar noticeably lighter or darker than the skin around it? If so, the problem is colour-related. A pale, "milky" scar suggests PMU camouflage. A dark, brown one may respond to laser or other brightening methods.

Look at the surface
Run your finger gently across the scar. Do you feel unevenness, an indentation, a thickened area? Are its edges raised? If so, the problem is texture-related. This is where laser and collagen-remodelling treatments make sense.

Assess how mature the scar is
Fresh scars (red, pink, still active) need time — usually at least a few months after healing. Both laser and PMU camouflage can only be used on mature, stabilised scars.

Assess both dimensions together
Many scars have a problem with both colour and texture. In that case, there isn't one single answer — there's a sequence: first even out the texture (laser, regenerative treatments), then camouflage the colour (PMU). A good specialist will guide you through this sequence.
When laser, when camouflage — and when both
In practice, a salon rarely sees a "pure" case of just one problem. So the guidance below is a general direction, not a verdict — the final decision always rests with the specialist after examining the scar:
A situation where both methods work together is more common than you might think. A scar from an accident, an extensive post-surgical mark, deep acne scars — these usually have both texture and colour to address. In that case, we work in stages: first the texture, then the colour. Pigment camouflage after laser can achieve results that neither method reaches on its own.
Laser + PMU camouflage (sequence)
Laser evens out the texture, PMU masks the remaining colour difference. The combined result is often significantly better than either method alone — it requires time between stages.
Regenerative treatments + PMU camouflage
Mesotherapy or biostimulation can prepare the skin and improve its condition before a PMU treatment — better hydration and elasticity make healing after micropigmentation easier.
Laser series
Texture-related scars often need several sessions — each one remodels collagen more deeply. Your specialist sets the treatment plan based on how your skin responds.
What neither method promises
Both laser and PMU camouflage are tools with proven effectiveness — but neither offers "erasing" a scar to zero. Skin at the site of a scar is a different type of tissue, and it will remain so to some extent, no matter how many sessions you have. What is realistic is a significant reduction in visibility — to the point where the scar stops drawing attention, yours or anyone else's.
