Why are there suddenly so many “exosomes” on the market?
Just a few years ago, exosomes were a term found in scientific literature. They were studied in oncology, neurology and immunology. They entered aesthetics relatively late, but quickly. Research into skin regeneration showed sufficiently promising results for salons to start asking, and manufacturers to respond to demand.
As a result, the market now offers dozens of products called “exosomes”. They come from different cellular sources and use different production processes. Importantly, they also contain different concentrations of active ingredients. The name is shared. The contents are not necessarily.
Six myths — one by one
Myth 1: “Exosomes are exosomes — they all work in the same way.” This belief is probably the most costly myth in the whole discussion. Exosomes differ in their cellular source (stem cells, adipocytes, fibroblasts, plant cells), isolation method (ultracentrifugation, chromatography, filtration — each method provides different purity), concentration of particles in a single vial and — crucially for the skin — the set of active growth factors and microRNA they contain. A product with a documented composition and certified production is entirely different from one that has only the word “exosomes” on its label.
Myth 2: “The more expensive, the better — simply buy the most expensive one.” Price is a signal, but not proof. Costly production, quality certifications, clinical research and a cold supply chain genuinely raise the price of a good product. Yet the market also includes expensive, weak products. Marketing is costly, and certifications are not always required. Look for specific data on the label: particle concentration (expressed numerically), cellular source, information about the isolation process and GMP certifications. The absence of this information alongside a high price is a warning sign, not a guarantee of quality.
Myth 3: “Affordable exosomes work just as well, only without the logo.” This is the opposite of the second myth — and equally misleading. Producing an exosome product with a controlled composition, proper isolation and scientific documentation is expensive because it is complex. A product that costs several times less than the market standard usually differs not only in price. It may also differ in active ingredient concentration, the purity of the exosome fraction and the likelihood that the vial contains exactly what the label declares. Saving money on an exosome product is not bargain hunting — it is buying something different under the same name.
Myth 4: “Exosomes are an anti-ageing treatment — for older people.” Exosomes work on regeneration and repair — mechanisms that are relevant at every age. For someone in their thirties whose skin is affected by stress, lack of sleep and pollution, exosomes may improve texture and firmness. For mature skin with more advanced ageing processes, they may support the restoration of density and elasticity. For skin after aesthetic treatments (laser, acids, peel) — they may accelerate regeneration and shorten recovery time. Exosomes are a repair tool, not only anti-ageing cosmetology.
Myth 5: “Exosomes replace PRP, biostimulators and other regenerative methods.” Exosomes work through a different mechanism from PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or biostimulators. They do not have a simple “better/worse” relationship with them. PRP provides autologous growth factors specific to each person. Biostimulators stimulate fibroblasts and support collagen production. Exosomes transport regulatory signals at a cellular level and may reach areas that other products do not. In advanced regeneration, these methods are often combined — as synergistic rather than competing tools. An exosome treatment “instead of PRP” or “instead of a biostimulator” is an oversimplification that may lead to unsuitable choices.
Myth 6: “The effects of exosomes are visible immediately after the treatment.” Exosomes initiate biological processes — and biology does not work minute by minute. Immediately after the treatment, your skin may look better because of hydration and the method used to introduce the product, such as mesotherapy. However, the proper effects of exosomes — deeper regeneration and improved texture, density and firmness — develop gradually over several to a dozen weeks. Expecting results “after the treatment” is the quickest route to disappointment. A good protocol involves several sessions and an assessment after the course is complete, not after the first session.
What to look for — exosomes through the lens of quality
Since the difference between products is real, it is worth knowing exactly what to look for. The first question: cellular source. The most extensively studied in dermatology are exosomes from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) — from adipose tissue or the umbilical cord. They provide a rich profile of growth factors relevant to the skin. Plant exosomes are a separate category. They are less expensive to produce, but have a different activity profile and far less clinical documentation in aesthetic applications.
The second question: concentration. The label and documentation of a good product will include a number — expressed numerically, not descriptively. “High concentration” is not data; a specific value is data. The third question: certifications. Production under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions is the minimum standard that ensures consistency of composition between batches. Production without this standard means that each delivery may have a different profile — regardless of what the label states.
Exosomes for women and men — different needs, the same mechanism
The mechanism of action of exosomes is independent of sex — but the reasons for choosing this treatment may differ. For women, the most common motivation is improving skin quality: loss of firmness, dullness and the first signs of reduced density. Exosomes work well as part of a course when the skin looks “tired” but does not yet require major interventions. They are also used to support the skin after laser treatments and deeper peels — reduced redness and faster epidermal recovery are effects that are well documented in this use.
For men, exosomes are most often considered in the context of restoration: thicker, oilier skin exposed to shaving and the urban environment. Their regenerative effects — improved texture, less visible pores and a better response after laser treatment or a peel — are just as real as for women. They are simply less often communicated as a goal in themselves. In practice, men more often ask about exosomes during another treatment: “What can I do to help this heal faster?” — and this is precisely the answer.
Before deciding on a treatment — three questions worth asking
Exosomes are not an over-the-counter supplement — they are a biological product introduced into the skin and should be selected according to your skin condition and treatment goal. Before choosing a particular salon, it is worth asking three questions. Which exosome line do you use and what is its concentration? If the salon only says “premium exosomes” without specifics, this is not a sufficient answer. How does this treatment fit my current skin condition? Exosomes are not “always a good idea”. Like every regenerative treatment, they have indications and situations where other methods may be more suitable. The third question is: what are the realistic results and when will we assess them? A good protocol includes review points — and honesty when results need to be supplemented with other methods.
This is the difference that the price does not fully reflect: between a salon that sells an “exosome treatment” and a place where someone first assesses your skin and selects the right tool for it. Exosomes may be one of the most interesting tools in that set — but only when they are the right tool for the right task.
