EMS and HIFEM activate muscles in two different ways — and that's exactly what decides which one answers your goal better.

When you hear "body muscle treatment", you're almost certainly thinking of one of two types of stimulation: electrical (EMS) or magnetic (HIFEM and its variants). From the outside they look similar — you lie down, the applicator works, your muscles contract. But the mechanism is completely different. That affects what you feel during the session, how deep the stimulus reaches and what results you can expect. Instead of asking "which one is better", it's worth asking "which one is better for what I'm looking for". This article will help you answer that.

Two stimuli — two routes to the muscle

Both EMS and HIFEM force the muscle to contract — they just take different routes to get there. EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) delivers an electrical impulse through the skin that mimics a nerve signal and triggers a contraction. HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Field) works through a magnetic field. It passes through skin and fat tissue without resistance, and only induces electrical current within the muscle fibres once it reaches the muscle tissue.

In practice, this means both treatments can produce similar muscle-strengthening results, but the route is different. So is the sensation, the intensity of the possible contractions, and how your body responds immediately after the session.

When to choose EMS, and when to choose HIFEM

The easiest way to decide is to ask yourself three questions: what's your goal, which area of the body do you want to improve, and do you prefer an active or a passive form?

    If your main aim is to strengthen muscles and improve your silhouette in a precisely chosen spot — the core, buttocks or thighs, for example — both treatments can work. HIFEM often achieves a stronger contraction intensity in large muscle groups.

    Goal: rehabilitation support or activating weakened muscles

    EMS has a long history of medical and rehabilitation use. When it comes to activating muscles after an injury, improving proprioception, or strengthening areas that are hard to isolate with classic training, EMS is often the first choice.

    Modern HIFEM devices often combine magnetic stimulation with additional technologies (RF, for example) targeting fat tissue. If you want to work on two goals at once, it's worth asking about available combinations.

    Active EMS training requires movement and effort from you — it combines an external stimulus with your own muscle work. A classic HIFEM treatment is passive: you lie down and rest while the device does the work. Choose the form you can repeat regularly.

What to feel and what to expect

During EMS, you'll feel a characteristic tingling and pulsing sensation, which can be more or less intense depending on the settings. The muscle contracts rhythmically. For many people, the first sessions trigger strong DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness) — a normal reaction to a new stimulus.

HIFEM produces a different sensation: the muscle contracts very deeply and intensely, often in a way training alone can't achieve. This can come as a surprise during the first session. After the treatment, many people feel their muscles have been "worked hard", similar to the effect of an intense training session.

When it's worth combining them

EMS and HIFEM don't compete with each other — they can complement each other within a plan, especially if you have several goals at once. A specialist puts the plan together based on your goal, your lifestyle and how you respond to the first sessions.

HIFEM on the abdomen + EMS on smaller areas

HIFEM works intensely on large muscle groups. EMS activates areas that are harder to isolate with more precision.

EMS for the activation phase + HIFEM for the contouring phase

After weakened muscles from a training break or rehabilitation: start with EMS activation, then move to more intense HIFEM work.

Modern devices often combine magnetic stimulation with radiofrequency — working on both muscle and fat tissue in a single session.

For many people, the best results come from combining in-salon stimulation with regular physical activity — the treatment builds strength, and training maintains it.
