Where it comes from and what it has to do with yoghurt
Lactic acid (2-hydroxypropanoic acid) is an alpha-hydroxy acid. It belongs to the same family as glycolic, mandelic and malic acid. All AHAs share one feature: a hydroxyl group on the first carbon, responsible for their affinity with the skin. However, not all AHAs are the same. They differ in molecular size, strength and how deeply they penetrate.
In nature, lactic acid is a product of lactic fermentation — hence its name. In cosmetology, it is used in synthetic or fermented form. Concentrations depend on its purpose, from mild daily-use products to higher-concentration professional salon peels.
The key difference from its AHA relatives is molecular size. Lactic acid is larger than glycolic acid. This is why it penetrates more slowly and less deeply. That is not a disadvantage. It makes it the first choice for sensitive and reactive skin, as well as for those starting to use acids.
How it works at cellular level — three mechanisms
When most people hear “acid peel”, they imagine one thing: exfoliation. Lactic acid does exfoliate — but that is only one of its mechanisms. Understanding the other two completely changes how you think about this ingredient.

Exfoliation
Lactic acid weakens the desmosomal bonds that connect dead epidermal cells — corneocytes — to one another. As a result, the stratum corneum exfoliates more regularly. Skin looks smoother and fresher. This mechanism is shared by all AHAs, although with lactic acid it is milder and slower than with glycolic acid, for example.

Moisturising — NMF and ceramides
Lactic acid is one of the natural components of NMF (Natural Moisturising Factor) — a moisturising factor produced by the skin itself. It supports ceramide synthesis and affects the epidermis’s ability to retain water. This means lactic acid moisturises skin from within. It does not only remove outer layers, but also actively strengthens the hydrolipid barrier. For many people, skin does not become dry after lactic acid peels. Instead, it feels more moisturised.

Collagen stimulation
When used regularly, lactic acid may stimulate fibroblasts — dermal cells responsible for collagen production. This effect is not visible immediately. It emerges with consistent use and is one reason why lactic acid peels are sometimes included in anti-ageing protocols, not only to smooth the skin.
Gentle — but why that is not a compliment
“Gentle” can sound less serious. Yet in the context of acids, gentleness means precision, not weakness. Lactic acid works more slowly and with more controlled depth. This matters greatly for reactive and vascular skin, after retinoid treatment or when concerned about summer sun.

This does not mean lactic acid is suitable only for sensitive skin. The right concentration and pH can make it a fully effective peel for hyperpigmentation, uneven texture or mature skin. Its advantage is flexibility. It can be used widely and regularly without the risk of excessive irritation, which can be a real concern with stronger acids.
Hyperpigmentation, acne and mature skin — when lactic acid shines
Lactic acid has more indications than the average acid. Its exfoliating, moisturising and collagen-stimulating effects make it effective in surprisingly varied situations.
- Sun-induced and post-acne hyperpigmentation. Lactic acid inhibits tyrosinase activity — the enzyme responsible for melanin production. Regular exfoliation accelerates epidermal cell turnover, gradually evening skin tone for many people.
- Dry and dehydrated skin. Lactic acid is one of the few AHAs that moisturises rather than only exfoliates. It offers a dual benefit for dry skin — removing flaky layers and strengthening the barrier.
- Mature skin. Exfoliation combined with collagen stimulation is particularly valuable after the age of forty, when cell turnover slows and collagen levels steadily decline.
- Acne and blackheads. Regular exfoliation with lactic acid may reduce clogged pores. Its antibacterial properties — resulting from its low pH — are an additional benefit for acne-prone skin.
- Reactive and vascular skin. When stronger acids cause flushing and stinging, lactic acid can be the only AHA that can be used without concern.
A salon lactic peel versus a home product — what is the difference
There is a vast range of lactic acid products on the market — from a toner available in a chemist to a professional salon peel. Where does this difference come from, and does it matter?
Over-the-counter products must have concentrations and pH levels suitable for safe use without professional supervision. This means their effects are noticeable but limited. This is particularly relevant when addressing deeper hyperpigmentation or visible texture changes. Home products work well as complementary skincare and to maintain salon results. They are not necessarily a standalone answer to a more significant concern.
A lactic acid peel performed in a salon works differently. A cosmetologist or doctor can select the right concentration and pH for your skin, neutralise it at the right time and monitor your skin’s reaction. This enables more intensive yet controlled treatment. It is safe in professional hands, but difficult to recreate at home.
Combine with and avoid
Lactic acid works well with many methods. However, like any acid, it requires certain safety measures.
Needle mesotherapy
A series of lactic acid peels can precede needle mesotherapy. It prepares the epidermis for better absorption of active ingredients. When both treatments are combined in a protocol, they often create a synergistic effect — smoother, better-hydrated skin after a peel responds more intensively to mesotherapy stimulation.
Tissue biostimulators
When improving skin quality and density is the priority, a lactic acid peel complements biostimulators well. It exfoliates and refreshes the epidermis, while the biostimulator works deeper to strengthen the collagen framework.
Laser Therapy and IPL
After laser or light-based treatments, skin is more sensitive. Lactic acid — introduced at the right time after recovery — can help maintain results by gradually evening out skin tone and texture. Always consult the cosmetologist overseeing your treatment first.
