DHA stains the epidermis, but application conditions still matter
DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a simple sugar that forms the base of every self-tanner and spray tan. Discovered by accident in the 1950s in Cincinnati, it works through the Maillard reaction: the same process that makes bread turn brown in the oven. DHA reacts with amino acids and keratin in dead epidermal cells, creating brown pigments called melanoidins.
- It requires no UV radiation — zero, null, nothing.
- It occurs only in the stratum corneum — the uppermost, dead layer of the epidermis.
- It is completely reversible — the colour disappears within a few to several days along with the natural exfoliation of the skin.
- It does not affect melanocytes — the cells producing real melanin remain untouched.
Professional spray tanning and at-home self-tanning differ in application control
Not all DHA applications are equal. The difference between a drugstore self-tanner and a professional spray tan in a clinic is like the difference between spray paint and automotive painting.
Myths about "always safe" hinder reasonable decisions
It is also worth remembering: a skin tan — whether from the sun or a solarium — is a defensive response to DNA damage. Melanocytes produce melanin to protect the cell nucleus from further radiation. It is not an ornament. It is an alarm.
Skin preparation cannot involve irritating it
A few rules will help you achieve the best, longest-lasting result:
- 24h before: exfoliate your skin with a mechanical scrub without oils (oils block DHA absorption). Pay special attention to knees, elbows and ankles — areas with a thicker stratum corneum.
- On the day of the treatment: do not apply creams, lotions, deodorant or perfume. Arrive with clean, dry skin.
- Clothing: dark, loose clothing. First shower after 8–12 hours (according to the technician's instructions).
- Aftercare: moisturise daily — well-moisturised skin exfoliates evenly, so the tan fades without patches. Avoid chlorine, saunas and harsh scrubs.
- Results last: the effect often lasts for a few to several days. Want to keep the colour longer? Schedule a top-up every 7–10 days.
The date before an event should leave a margin
Timing is one of the most important decisions you make regarding a spray tan before a wedding. A treatment done too early will fade before the ceremony; done the day before, it may not have time to fully develop or — if anything goes wrong — there will be no time for corrections. Below is a plan that works best.

4–6 weeks before the wedding — trial visit
This is a mandatory step that most brides skip — and later regret. A trial visit allows you to match the shade to your skin tone and dress, check how your skin reacts to the product, and see the result with your own eyes before drawing conclusions on the wedding day. It is also the moment to learn the aftercare rules — so that everything happens automatically around the wedding.

2–3 weeks before the wedding — skin-beautifying treatment
This is the window for treatments that improve texture and even out skin tone: enzymatic peels, moisturising care, or perhaps a laser for hyperpigmentation if you had planned it. The better the initial skin condition, the more even and long-lasting the spray tan. If you are in the habit of waxing, schedule it here, not closer to the wedding.

48–72 hours before the wedding — the actual treatment
This is the best window. DHA colour "matures" over the first 8–24 hours, so done two to three days before the wedding, it will be fully developed and even for the ceremony. You also have time for minor corrections if anything needs touching up. Do not get a spray tan on the wedding day — the colour will not have time to develop.

The day before the wedding — moisturising only
No new treatments, no shaving, no strong exfoliating agents. The skin should be moisturised and not irritated. Avoid long baths in hot water — they speed up the fading of the tan.

Wedding day — fixing the effect
Gentle washing of the body, light moisturising with a non-oily lotion, and that is it. Remember to put your dress on after the lotion has dried completely. For make-up, choose products that do not rub off — DHA is water-resistant, but mechanical friction can lighten areas of intense contact.
Hair removal, exfoliation and cosmetics can change the skin's reaction
This is the heart of the entire process. A spray tan is applied to the skin as it is — and that is why the quality of the initial skin determines the durability and evenness of the result. Below is a list of steps worth taking in the week before each visit (both the trial and the actual one).
- Exfoliation 48 hours before the treatment — a body scrub (mechanical or enzymatic) should take place two days before the spray tan, not on the day of the treatment. Skin after exfoliation is slightly "stimulated" and needs time to stabilise. Focus on elbows, knees, ankles and wrists — areas where the skin is thicker and the pigment collects more unevenly.
- Shaving and waxing — no closer than 24–48 hours before the treatment — waxing in particular should take place well in advance; immediately after waxing, pores are open and can absorb pigment unevenly.
- Intensive moisturising — in the days preceding — the better moisturised the skin, the more evenly it absorbs DHA. Focus on dry areas: shins, feet, hands, elbows.
- No oily cosmetics on the day of the treatment — no body oils, silicone-based creams or lotions with argan oil right before the visit. They create a barrier through which DHA does not enter evenly.
- No deodorants or perfumes on the body skin — the alcohol in their composition can react with DHA and create discolouration, especially in the underarm area.
- Wear loose, dark clothing to your visit — the pigment may stain light fabrics for the first few hours after the treatment, before your skin absorbs the excess.
An active rash, wound or flare-up of a skin condition is a reason to reschedule.
Spray tanning is delicate — not because it is easy to "ruin", but because a few specific mistakes can significantly shorten its lifespan or alter its appearance. The list below covers the most common pitfalls.
Monitor your skin after the treatment and do not ignore general symptoms.
If you did everything correctly before and during the treatment — now it is about making the tan last not just for the wedding day, but for the honeymoon too. It is simpler than it seems if you follow a few rules.
- Moisturise daily — with a lotion free from mineral oils and alcohol. Moist skin exfoliates more slowly, so the tan lasts longer. Pay special attention to your elbows, knees and ankles.
- Wash gently and briefly — use lukewarm water and a soft washcloth (not a rough sponge), and avoid long soaking.
- Avoid the pool for the first 4–5 days — if you are planning a honeymoon with a beach and pool, it is worth having the treatment just before your flight, not a week earlier.
- Do not shave daily — mechanical shaving removes the outer layer of the epidermis along with the tan. Where possible — wax much earlier and leave a longer gap.
- Extend the effect with a complementary bronzing lotion — a gentle, hydrating lotion with a gradual tanning effect can be used every 2–3 days after the treatment to maintain colour saturation. It is not a self-tanner, so it applies evenly over the existing layer.

An alternative to UV still does not replace sunscreen.
Active ingredient: DHA (dihydroxyacetone) — a sugar that reacts chemically with the amino acids of the epidermis → Maillard reaction → browning of the skin surface. It is identical to the browning of starch when baking bread — but in the skin.
Important: DHA works ONLY on the surface layers of the epidermis — it does not penetrate, does not enter the bloodstream and does not stimulate melanocytes.
No UV: Spray tan does not activate melanocytes and provides no real protection against the sun. SPF is still required.
A safe visit begins with eye and respiratory protection.
- Preparation (an important step, the day before):

- Immediately before:

How long does the tan last?
Colour: Starts after 4–8 hours, full effect after 12–24 hours.
Durability: 5–10 days — depends on the rate of epidermal exfoliation (varies for each person).
What shortens it: Pool (chlorine), sea (salt), long baths, scrubs.
What extends it: Moisturising after tanning (post-bronzing cream without SLS), short lukewarm showers.
Colours and shades

After the consultation, write down in your own words what problem the spray tan is meant to solve, how the change will be assessed and what the procedure intentionally does not cover. If you cannot reconstruct these three elements, ask for a re-explanation before giving your consent. The product name, visit duration and photos of other people do not replace a goal tailored to your starting point.
A good plan also includes a variant where the treatment is postponed, changed or proves unnecessary. This is not a lack of confidence on the specialist's part, but proof that the decision responds to the interview and the condition of your skin. Establish when the follow-up takes place, what sensations are expected and who answers questions if the progress deviates from the discussed scenario.
The final criterion is simple: after the conversation, you should understand both the potential benefit and the biological cost in the form of irritation, healing or care restrictions. An informed decision is not about choosing the most intense option. It is about choosing the smallest reasonable intervention that addresses a properly defined problem.
Do not compare the result solely with a photo taken immediately after the procedure. Light, swelling, surface tension and cosmetics can temporarily alter the appearance. A reliable control point should correspond to the treatment mechanism and take place under similar conditions. Record the date, products used, unusual sensations and changes in care so that the next assessment is not based on memory. Only then can you decide whether to continue, change the rhythm or stop the plan.
