Where hyperpigmentation comes from — and why it doesn't fade on its own
Hyperpigmentation is a spot where melanin — the skin's pigment — has built up in excess. It can result from long-term UV exposure (the sun accumulates damage over years), mechanical irritation (daily shaving, especially with ingrown hairs) or inflammation following acne or infection. Melanocytes — the cells that produce melanin — don't know that the trigger has stopped. Once activated, they often keep producing excess pigment long after the trigger has gone.
In men, the mechanism is identical to women, but thicker skin means hyperpigmentation can sit deeper in the epidermis. Ordinary "brightening" cosmetics have little chance of reaching it. That's why clinic treatments make more sense here than for many other skin concerns — not because anything is seriously wrong, but because the result requires strength a tube of cream simply doesn't have.
Two different problems — two different approaches
Sun spots and shaving marks look similar, but they have different origins and respond differently to treatment. It's worth telling them apart, so you don't waste time on a method suited to something else.

Brightening methods — what works on thicker male skin
Several options exist, and each reaches a slightly different layer of skin. The choice depends on how deep the hyperpigmentation sits, your skin phototype, and how much downtime you can afford. Here's the detail — without ranking what counts as a "serious treatment" and what doesn't.

Acid peels
AHAs (glycolic, mandelic) exfoliate the epidermis and inhibit melanin production. With regular sessions, they can significantly brighten superficial hyperpigmentation. Men's skin is thicker, so a cosmetologist often chooses higher concentrations than for a treatment on a woman. The effect builds over several sessions — don't expect a breakthrough after just one.

Cavitation peel and microdermabrasion
Mechanical exfoliation of the top layer of the epidermis. It helps with superficial spots and the "thick" texture that often accompanies sun-induced hyperpigmentation. It works well as skin preparation for deeper acid therapy.

Laser and IPL treatments
Intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser target the melanin within the hyperpigmented spot — heating it so the skin gradually clears the damaged cells. For sun spots in men, many people see fast, lasting results. It requires an assessment of skin phototype and sometimes several sessions. A consultation is essential before treatment.

Brightening mesotherapy
Micro-injections of brightening substances (vitamin C, tranexamic acid, niacinamide) delivered directly into the skin. They reach where cream never can. Particularly useful for hyperpigmentation that's diffuse or hard for lasers to target.
Shaving marks — a problem you can solve systematically
For many men, dark shaving marks are a secondary problem — the main cause is repeated, ongoing irritation, and brightening without removing that cause just treats the symptom. That's why a full plan often includes two steps: reducing skin irritation from shaving, and actively brightening the marks that are already there.
- Shaving technique: multi-blade razors and infrequent blade changes are among the leading causes of micro-cuts and the inflammation that follows. Shaving against the grain, too little foam or protective gel, too much pressure — each of these adds to the build-up of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
- Ingrown hairs: if hairs grow back under the skin (a more common issue with curly hair and darker skin tones), each ingrown hair is a potential dark spot resulting from inflammation. Here, brightening is only one part of the solution — the other is addressing the ingrown-hair problem itself.
- Mechanical and acid exfoliation in the beard zone: regular exfoliation of the shaving area reduces both the risk of ingrown hairs and the build-up of dead skin roughness. It's an aftercare step many men simply skip.
Home care that actually makes sense
Clinic treatments do the heavy lifting, but between sessions — and after the plan ends — daily habits decide whether the result stays. This isn't about a ten-step ritual, just two products used consistently.
- SPF 30–50 every day — even in autumn and winter, even when you're not heading out "into the sun". UV comes through windows, bounces off asphalt and concrete — melanocytes don't tell the difference. A morning SPF product is one step that protects every brightening result.
- A brightening active in the evening — niacinamide, vitamin C, retinol or azelaic acid. You don't need all of them; one product with one active ingredient, used regularly, makes a real difference within a few weeks. A cosmetologist can advise what suits your skin phototype and current skin condition.
- A peel once a week — a gel or cream with a gentle AHA. It keeps the epidermis in good condition, reduces the risk of shaving marks, and helps active ingredients penetrate more effectively.
What a clinic plan looks like — no surprises
The first appointment is a consultation — assessing how deep the hyperpigmentation sits, your skin phototype and skin history. Based on this, we choose a method or a combination of several. For typical sun spots, the plan for many people involves several sessions of peels or laser treatments spaced out over time — the skin needs breaks between sessions to recover properly.
Results don't appear overnight — worth knowing in advance, so you don't judge results after the first session. With acid peels, noticeable improvement is often visible after 3–4 treatments. Laser treatments can give faster results, but this depends on how deep the hyperpigmentation sits and your skin phototype. Every plan is also different — there's no single formula that fits everyone.
There's no downtime in the sense of "you need to take time off" — the skin may look slightly pink or feel more sensitive for a day or two, but you return to your normal day almost immediately. The only restriction is the sun: intense UV exposure right after the treatment is a recipe for new hyperpigmentation in the same spot.

IPL + home care with SPF
Laser or IPL treatments require consistent UV protection between sessions and after the series ends. Without SPF, melanocytes rebuild hyperpigmentation faster than it disappeared. Combining both gives a lasting result.
Peel + ingrown hair treatment
For shaving marks, it's worth addressing the ingrown-hair problem (laser hair removal or a change in technique) alongside the hyperpigmentation. A brightening treatment alone, without removing the source of irritation, gives only short-lived results.
