The miracle package: 8 cm in one session. Why it isn't as simple as it sounds

The numbers in adverts sound miraculous. Underneath, though, is ordinary biology — demanding, but predictable.

You're scrolling social media and you hit an advert: "-8 cm in one session, guaranteed!". Your reaction — a mix of hope and scepticism — is entirely rational. That kind of headline is both true and misleading at once: true, because someone probably did measure an 8 cm difference; misleading, because the sentence leaves out everything that actually matters.

Body-contouring treatments sit in a space where marketing and biology talk past each other — and rarely say the same thing. Adverts focus on numbers; biology prefers to talk about processes. And to really understand what's happening in your body during the treatment — and why results vary so much from person to person — you need to hear that second side of the story.

This article is an attempt to translate the biology into something that makes sense before you decide. No scare tactics, no magical thinking — just an honest look at how centimetre reduction actually works.

Where these centimetres come from — and where the discrepancy comes from

Let's start with a simple question: what exactly are we measuring? A body circumference is the distance a tape measure covers around a given area — the abdomen, thighs, waist. This figure can change for several unrelated reasons: fat loss, changes in tissue hydration, changes in muscle tone, time of day, or how tightly the tape was pulled. In clinical studies, a lot of effort goes into eliminating these variables to measure the "pure" effect of a treatment.

Adverts often skip that effort. Measurement before, measurement after, subtract — done. But if someone was slightly swollen before the treatment and wasn't afterwards; if the tape was pulled differently; if they were dieting at the same time — the figure of 8 cm will genuinely appear, even though part of it has nothing to do with the treatment. That's not a lie. It's just not the whole truth either.

This matters — not to discredit these treatments, because the effects are real — but so you know what to realistically expect, and how to judge whether a treatment worked. A centimetre count is a convenient shorthand, but the real test is different: do clothes fit better? Is your silhouette more defined? Does the tissue feel less soft to the touch? These questions get closer to the truth.

What actually happens to fat tissue during a treatment

To understand why results appear — and why they're sometimes smaller than promised — it helps to know what fat tissue actually is and how it responds to different stimuli. It isn't a passive store. It's living tissue, with its own blood supply, nerve supply and metabolic activity. That's exactly why it can be influenced — and exactly why its response is so individual.

  • Adipocytes — fat cells. This is the basic unit of fat tissue. Each cell is like a balloon filled with triglycerides. An adult typically has a fixed number of them — only their size changes, not their number. That's why weight loss "shrinks" cells rather than removing them permanently — and why the results of dieting can be reversed.
  • Lipolysis. When the body needs energy, or when a cell receives the right stimulus (thermal, mechanical or photochemical, depending on the method), the triglycerides inside an adipocyte can break down into fatty acids and glycerol. These metabolites enter the bloodstream and are processed by the liver. That's what "burning" fat actually means — not disappearing, but converting into energy.
  • Apoptosis — controlled cell death. More aggressive methods can physically destroy fat cells. Dead cells are cleared by the immune system, a process that takes weeks. That's why results from some treatments appear gradually — the body is literally clearing up after the session.
  • Neovascularisation and drainage. Every thermal or mechanical treatment also affects circulation in the tissue. Better blood flow and lymphatic drainage reduce fluid retention, which also affects circumference — through a different mechanism from adipocyte reduction.

Why the same treatment gives such different results

This is the question that comes up most often after treatment: my friend lost 8 cm, I lost 3. Same salon, same method, same series of visits. Did something go wrong? Usually not. Usually it's biology.

    Type and location of tissue

    Subcutaneous fat (the "pinchable", shallow kind) responds to treatments very differently from visceral fat (deep, intra-abdominal). The first is accessible to laser or ultrasound energy. The second isn't accessible to any non-invasive treatment. That's why contouring results show up where fat is subcutaneous — not simply where there's a lot of it.

    Tissue quality and circulation

    Cellulite (lipodystrophy) changes the structure of subcutaneous tissue — collagen fibres are altered, and local circulation is weaker. Tissue with these structural changes responds differently to thermal and mechanical energy than healthy, unaffected tissue. In practice, this means areas with more pronounced cellulite may respond more slowly, or less strongly.

    Hormonal activity

    Oestrogen, cortisol, insulin — all of these influence adipocyte metabolism, and how fat tissue responds to stimulation. Hormonal fluctuations (menstrual cycle, menopause, stress, thyroid conditions) can either strengthen or weaken the response to treatment. This is one reason why results from the same series can vary in the same person at different stages of life.

    Body-contouring treatments are a tool, not a substitute for lifestyle. Fat tissue that "shrinks" after a treatment can return quickly if diet and activity levels don't change — or get worse. On the other hand, even modest movement and good hydration can noticeably strengthen the results of a series.

"8 cm in one session" might mean: one session out of a whole series, results in a single, highly responsive person, the best of several measurement points, measured 8 weeks after the treatment — once results had already peaked. None of these assumptions is a lie on its own. But all of them together aren't very representative.

Which methods are available, and how they differ

Body-contouring treatments aren't a single treatment — they're a whole family of methods, each working on fat tissue through a different mechanism. Choosing a method depends on what exactly you want to achieve, what type of tissue dominates in that area, and your tolerance for discomfort. Below is a general overview of how each works — without technical parameters, since the mechanism matters more than the numbers.

  • Laser energy (diode laser, Nd:YAG laser). Light energy absorbed by melanin and oxyhaemoglobin penetrates fat tissue and triggers a thermal response in adipocytes. This can cause both lipolysis (triglyceride breakdown) and cell apoptosis. Laser methods often act on circulation and skin firmness at the same time.
  • Ultrasound (body HIFU, focused ultrasound). Mechanical energy focused on a specific point can mechanically destroy adipocytes without damaging the layers above and below. The effect is apoptotic, and takes weeks to fully develop. It works well on deeper subcutaneous tissue.
  • Cryostimulation / cold. Adipocytes are unusually sensitive to low temperatures — they freeze before the tissue around them does. Controlled cooling triggers apoptosis selectively in fat cells. Results build over several weeks after treatment.
  • Radiofrequency and electromagnetic muscle stimulation. Some devices combine fat-tissue contouring with building muscle tone — changing your silhouette through a different mechanism entirely. It's worth knowing exactly what a given device does, so you're not comparing things that can't be compared.

What actually strengthens the results of a series

One of the least-discussed, and most important, points in this conversation: body-contouring treatments work far better when they're supported by lifestyle. This isn't a salon excuse for a lack of results. It's biology. Fat tissue is metabolically active — and its activity depends heavily on what you eat, how you move, and how you sleep.

  • Hydration. Metabolites from broken-down adipocytes (fatty acids, glycerol) travel through blood and lymph. Good hydration literally speeds up their removal from tissue. Dehydrated tissue responds more weakly and recovers more slowly after treatment.
  • Physical activity — especially after treatment. Movement speeds up liver metabolism of fatty acids and supports lymphatic drainage. Light activity (walking, swimming) in the days after treatment can noticeably strengthen the result — particularly with methods that trigger lipolysis.
  • Cutting back on simple sugars and alcohol. The liver, which has to process metabolites released by the treatment, copes better when it isn't overloaded with other substances. Alcohol and high blood sugar block metabolic lipolysis and can significantly weaken the results of a series.
  • Regular sleep and stress management. Cortisol — the stress hormone — actively encourages visceral fat storage and reduces the effectiveness of lipolysis. A sleep-deprived, stressed person can get objectively worse results from the same series than someone who's relaxed, even if the treatment itself was identical.

Lymphatic drainage

Supports the removal of metabolites after a laser treatment — helps transport fatty acids out of the tissue and reduces post-treatment swelling.

Cellulite treatments

When the issue isn't just the amount of fat tissue but its altered structure — grade 2 or 3 cellulite — it's often worth working on connective-tissue septa alongside the main treatment.
