Nanobonds are a miniature version of keratin bonds. The mechanics are the same as with classic keratin extensions — the added strand is fused to your hair using keratin that wraps around the root. The difference is in scale: instead of a few larger capsules, you get many very small bonds, each covering a thin strand of your own hair.
What does this change in practice? First — discretion: the tiny bonds are even harder to feel or see, disappearing among your hair even when it's pinned up. Second — lightness: the weight is spread across many small points, so the load on a single hair is lighter. That's why nanobonds work so well for thin, delicate hair, for which larger bonds can feel "too heavy".

How it works
A nanobond is made from a miniature portion of keratin, which the stylist heats and shapes around a thin strand of your hair close to the root. Once it cools, the material sets into a tiny, smooth bond that wraps around the hair like a flexible sleeve — it doesn't pierce it, doesn't clamp onto a single hair, and doesn't change its structure. An added strand is attached to this bond, so from that moment your hair and the added hair move together. Because the attachment point is very small, it hides among your own hair instead of forming a noticeable lump.
The mechanics of durability come down to force distribution. Each bond carries only the weight of the one thin strand it covers — the more small points there are, the less work falls on a single hair at the root. Two things work against time here: keratin softens under high heat (which is why straighteners and curling irons avoid the bond itself), and your hair grows, so the bond travels downward with the regrowth. The further from the scalp, the longer the lever arm acting on the hair, and the easier it is for tangling to occur at the root — which is why a touch-up every few weeks is built into this method, not an emergency fix.

Fun fact: the bonding material is named after keratin — the protein hair itself is made of. It was chosen deliberately: it behaves similarly to hair, softening under heat and setting once cool, rather than crumbling when combed. This same property is why removing the extensions involves softening the bond with a solution, rather than pulling the strands out.

This matters especially for a delicate effect — good-quality natural hair moves like your own, while cheap synthetic strands tangle and shine unnaturally, which stands out immediately on thin hair. Ask about the origin and type of strands.
Even a light method has its limits. The stylist matches the number of small bonds to your hair's actual load capacity — not to the maximum possible. This is exactly why nanobonds are lighter: it's about weight distribution, not quantity.
For thin hair, gentle washing, brushing and drying matter even more — it's half the success and half the longevity.
🚩 Red flag: when NOT to have nanobonds applied · Even though this is a light method — if your hair is falling out more than usual, thinning, or the hairline is receding, that's a signal to see a trichologist first, rather than loading a weakened root with even small bonds. Also watch out for straighteners and high heat directly on the bond — the keratin in a mini bond, like any keratin, can soften and the strand can slip (style away from the bonds). Remember: "light" doesn't mean "for any hair" — very weakened, shedding hair can't be rescued with extensions.
What to expect
Nanobonds reward patience — both from the client and from me. There are many bonds, so the application takes time, but that's exactly what gives this light, discreet effect. Home care
Thin hair with extensions is an investment worth caring for twice as carefully. Good news: the rules are the same as with any keratin extensions — gentleness and habit. Here's what to do, what to wait on, and what to avoid.
Wash with your head upright (don't tip it far back under the shower), using a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo. Apply conditioner and mask only on the lengths, avoiding the bonds and the root.
Comb from the ends upward, holding the strand at the root. A soft brush designed for extensions is especially important here — with many small bonds, an ordinary "wild" brush catches more easily.
Don't apply a straightener or curling iron directly to the bond — the keratin in a mini bond softens under high heat and the strand can slip. Style the lengths and leave the root alone.
At night, tie your hair into a loose plait or bun and sleep on a silk pillowcase — less tangling at the root, which makes a big difference for thin hair. Don't go to sleep with wet hair.
Rich oils and heavy conditioners right at the bond can weaken it and cause the strand to slip. Care for the ends, and stay away from the mini bonds.
Chlorine and salt water dry out the strands. Tie your hair up before swimming, then rinse thoroughly and moisturise the lengths afterwards. Very hot saunas near the bonds — in moderation.

Then I say it directly: a trichologist first, styling second. That's not a refusal — it's looking after your hair.
