What Olaplex actually does
Hair holds together thanks to a network of internal "bridges" — bonds that link its structures and are responsible for elasticity, shine and strength. Colouring, and especially lightening, breaks these bonds. The more chemical treatments and heat (straighteners, hairdryers), the more broken connections — and the more porous, dull and brittle hair becomes.
Olaplex works exactly at this level: it finds the broken bonds and rebuilds them from within. This is the fundamental difference from a regular conditioner or mask, which mainly smooths and moisturises the surface — a nice effect, but a temporary one, because it doesn't touch the structure itself. Olaplex works inside, so its effect lasts longer and builds up over a series.
In short: a mask coats hair from the outside, Olaplex binds it back together from within. Both have their place — but they're not the same thing, and one doesn't replace the other.
How it works
Hair is made of keratin — long protein chains held together by several types of bonds. The weakest are loosened by plain water, and it's thanks to these that wet hair can be shaped and holds that shape once dry. The strongest are disulphide bridges — bonds between sulphur atoms in cysteine, one of keratin's amino acids — and these are responsible for the hair's elasticity and strength. Bleach and colour work in an alkaline environment that oxidises this sulphur: the bridge splits into two free ends and won't reconnect on its own.
You feel the effect in your hand before you see it in the mirror — the more broken bridges, the more the hair stretches like elastic when wet and fails to spring back. This is where Olaplex comes in: its active molecule acts as a linker that finds individual, free sulphur ends and joins them back together into a single bridge. That's why it's called a "bond builder" rather than a "conditioner" — it works on the bonds inside the hair, not on its surface. This is also why stylists prefer to add it directly into the colour or bleach mixture: protection then happens at the exact moment the damage occurs, instead of trying to make up for it weeks later. So the result isn't judged by how shiny hair looks right after the visit, but by how well it withstands brushing and everyday styling over the following weeks.
Fact: your hair's elasticity comes down to sulphur. That's the distinctive smell you notice when a strand gets scorched by a straightener — sulphur compounds released from broken disulphide bridges. These same bridges are broken and then reformed in a new arrangement by a classic perm: it's the only way to make straight hair curl "from within", rather than just for the duration of one styling session.

Olaplex from cut-price online deals is usually counterfeit — it won't rebuild the structure, and in the worst case it can weigh hair down. In the salon, we use only the original system. And one more important point: Olaplex repairs the structure, but it won't glue back together ends that have already frayed and split — no product can save these, they simply need trimming.
