Narrow, "disappearing" lips, a blurred contour, asymmetry between the upper and lower lip, drooping corners or simply dry, chapped lips — these are the most common reasons why women ask about lip contouring. Contrary to the term "augmentation", this is not about "more at any cost": a well-performed treatment contours the shape, defines the border, balances proportions and hydrates — always in harmony with the rest of the face.
The result should be "lips like yours, only better", not "done". A huge advantage is full reversibility — the hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if necessary. What lip contouring is
Lip contouring (augmentation) involves the administration of hyaluronic acid dedicated to this area to give the lips volume, a clearer contour, better hydration and to correct minor asymmetries — always in proportion to the rest of the face. When well-performed, it does not change the character of the face: it gives the effect of "lips like yours, only better", not "done".
It is worth separating two concepts that often merge into one in everyday speech. "Augmentation" suggests volume alone, but in practice, it is more often about contouring: sometimes it is about greater fullness, sometimes solely about defining the contour, correcting the shape, lifting the corners or hydrating chapped lips. The goal is determined individually — not every pair of lips needs "more".
The most common fear — the "duck face" — comes from excess and poor technique, not from the method itself. Too much product or administration in the wrong place gives an unnatural, "puffy" effect. Hence the rule we follow: for the first time, we work conservatively — it is easier to add more later than to correct an excess.
A huge advantage of hyaluronic acid is its full reversibility. If the result is not to your liking or if a complication occurs, the product can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) and you can return to the starting point. This is one of the most important arguments for choosing an original, well-known HA product and an experienced doctor — reversibility is a real safeguard.
How it works
The lip product is cross-linked hyaluronic acid — individual molecules connected into a stable mesh that breaks down much slower than the free form. The doctor administers it into strictly defined layers: along the vermilion border when the goal is the contour and "drawing" of the lips, or deeper, into the submucosal part of the lip when it comes to volume and shape support. These are two different techniques and two different effects — and the depth of administration, the amount of product and the choice of tool (needle or cannula) are decided by the doctor during the consultation, after assessing facial proportions and medical qualification. The lip area is exceptionally well-vascularised, so knowledge of vascular anatomy counts here more than the contouring technique itself.
The result comes from two overlapping phenomena. The gel physically occupies space in the tissue and supports it from within — hence the fullness and clearer lip edge. At the same time, hyaluronic acid binds water in an amount many times exceeding its own mass, and this hydration is responsible for the softness and improvement in the quality of chapped vermilion — and in the first few days also for the swelling, which is sometimes mistaken for the result. The product does not stay in the lip indefinitely: tissue enzymes break it down gradually, and the body absorbs the resulting fragments. Lips work with every word and every sip, so this happens faster than in areas with little movement — which is why the effect is by definition temporary and for most people lasts shorter than with cheek or chin contouring.
Interesting fact: the vermilion has no sebaceous or sweat glands — as the only area of the face, it cannot lubricate itself because it has nothing to do it with. The stratum corneum is also much thinner here than on the rest of the face, which is why vessels show through it (hence the colour of the lips themselves) and why lips chap in the wind and frost much faster than cheeks.
Ideal for
The plan always relates to the entire face — it is not about "more", but about the harmony of proportions. Sometimes the doctor's best recommendation is a small contour correction or just hydration, rather than augmentation.
Women's zone and men's zone
This is definitely the most common variant — lip augmentation for women. The goal is natural fullness, a distinct, "clean" contour, a nicely defined Cupid's bow and good hydration — all in proportion to the face. For some, we work on volume; for others, mainly on symmetry, shape or lifting drooping corners.
The areas we support
Lip augmentation for men is significantly rarer and, by design, very subtle. It is almost never about augmentation, but about correcting proportions, symmetry and hydration — the effect should be completely invisible as a "treatment". We work particularly conservatively to maintain the natural, masculine character of the lips.

Interesting fact: hyaluronic acid is a substance that your body produces itself — it is responsible for, among other things, the hydration and elasticity of tissues. The lip product is the same compound in a stable, cross-linked form, which is why the body tolerates it well and breaks it down naturally over time.
Safety
The lip area is highly vascularised. When modelling, three things matter, which you should ask about in every clinic:
This is a medical procedure. At J'adore Instytut, it is performed exclusively by an aesthetic medicine doctor. The doctor understands vascular anatomy, selects the injection technique, and is responsible for proper qualification and any potential correction.
We work only with well-known, certified hyaluronic acid products from authorised distributors. This is also important because original HA is reversible. It can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, which provides real security in the event of a complication or an unsatisfactory result.
The doctor selects the technique (needle or cannula), the site, and the amount of product individually. This is why a consultation is mandatory, and we assess the result only after the swelling has stabilised.
Red flag: suspiciously cheap lips · The most serious (though rare) risk with lips is vascular complications — vessel occlusion. This is not a treatment to cut costs on. A bargain price and an unknown product are the most common warning signs. You have the right to ask for the name of the product, who is administering it, and whether it is reversible. A good clinic will answer without hesitation.
Contraindications
Some contraindications are permanent, and some are temporary — in those cases, we simply reschedule the treatment until the situation passes.
From the doctor's office
The most commonly downplayed issue: herpes. Clients think "I only have a tiny lesion, far from the injection site". With lips, this is an obstacle — an active virus is a risk of reactivation, regardless of where it appeared. It is better to reschedule by a few days.
This is not a full list. The most serious, albeit rare, risk is vascular complications — which is why an experienced doctor and an original, reversible preparation count. We will go through your medications, diseases and previous treatments individually during the consultation.
The visit
Medical consultation
the doctor assesses lip and facial proportions, symmetry, contour, and volume. They establish a realistic, natural goal with you and select the product. They take a medical history, including the essential question about cold sores.
Anaesthesia
the lips are a sensitive area. We use numbing cream, often a dental block, and the products themselves usually contain lidocaine. This makes the treatment comfortable.
Modelling
the doctor administers the product using a needle or cannula, modelling the shape as they go and controlling symmetry and proportions. They work gradually, assessing the effect throughout.
Tips and leaving
you return to your daily routine, accounting for swelling. There are no bandages, but your lips will be noticeably swollen for the first few days.
Potential correction
after the effect has stabilised (approx. 2 weeks), the doctor assesses whether a minor top-up is needed.
What to expect
Honesty is most important here: lips swell significantly. Immediately after the treatment and for the first few days, they may be noticeably larger, firmer, and more "puffy" than the final result will be. This is swelling, not the result. This is completely normal; do not judge the treatment or be alarmed by it.
Some patients write on the second day that their "lips are huge". This is swelling, not the result. Please do not judge the outcome after the first few days. Only when the product has settled can you see the true shape and volume.

The most peace of mind comes from asking about cold sores during the consultation, not on the day of the treatment. If I know in advance that cold sores are recurrent, I can plan antiviral cover and the right timing — and we avoid cancelling the treatment at the last minute.

Practical conclusion: lips should not be modelled just before an important event (wedding, photoshoot, trip). Leave yourself a buffer — preferably at least two weeks — so the swelling can subside and the lips can take on their intended look. As a highly mobile area, the lips absorb the product faster than, for example, the cheeks, so the effect is refreshed as needed.
Lips and your lifestyle
The first few days are about protecting your modelled lips and limiting swelling and the risk of bruising. There is one rule — do not irritate the freshly modelled area and do not exacerbate swelling with heat or exertion.
Do not massage or apply pressure to the lips for approx. 48 hours (unless the doctor recommends a gentle massage). Let the product settle.
Avoid very spicy, hot, and hard food for the first 24 hours. Eat carefully so as not to irritate the lips.
Put away lipstick and lip liner for approx. 24 hours until the small needle marks have closed.
High temperatures increase swelling. Sauna, swimming pool, and hot baths are best left for a few days.
Increased circulation promotes swelling and bruising. Postpone intense training for the first few days.
Protect your lips from intense sun, tanning beds, and frost; use a lip balm with SPF. Gentle cooling with clean compresses helps with swelling — ask your doctor about medication.
Alcohol dilates blood vessels and promotes swelling and bruising. It is best to avoid it on the day of the treatment and the day after. You should discuss any substances that increase bleeding with your doctor beforehand.
Lip contouring
These two treatments are often confused because both "improve the lips" — but they do completely different things. Sometimes only one is used, sometimes both are combined:

What to combine with
Lip contouring is often part of a broader facial harmonisation plan. The order and intervals are decided by a doctor during the consultation — not everything is done in one visit — but the general logic remains the same:
It is simple: if you want truly fuller, better-contoured lips → HA filler. If you want to very gently enhance the upper lip without adding volume (e.g. for a "hiding" lip when smiling) → lip flip. I will assess what you need during the consultation — sometimes the best effect comes from combining both.

Fact: Why the price difference? It is made up of several things: the cross-linking technology of the hyaluronic acid (determines how the gel behaves, how long it holds its shape and how natural it looks), the nature of the preparation (greater volume or rather soft hydration), durability, and the brand and its documentation. The conclusion is always the same: more expensive does not mean "better for everyone" — it means "different, for a different need". What counts is the selected preparation and the doctor's hand, not the name on the packaging.
