Narrow, "disappearing" lips, a blurred contour, asymmetry between the upper and lower lip, drooping corners, or simply dry, chapped lips — these are the most common reasons women ask about lip contouring. Despite the name "lip augmentation", it's not about "more at any cost".
A well-performed treatment contours the shape, defines the outline, evens out proportions and hydrates — always in harmony with the rest of the face. The result should read as "your lips, just prettier", never as "done". A major advantage is full reversibility — hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if needed. What lip contouring is
Lip contouring (augmentation) involves injecting hyaluronic acid designed for this area, to give the lips volume, a more defined contour, better hydration and to correct minor asymmetries — always in proportion to the rest of the face. Done well, it doesn't change the character of the face: the result is "your lips, just prettier", not "done".
It's worth separating two concepts that tend to blur together in everyday speech. "Augmentation" suggests volume alone, but in practice it's more often about contouring: sometimes more fullness, sometimes purely defining the contour, correcting the shape, lifting the corners of the mouth, or hydrating chapped lips. The goal is set individually — not every mouth needs "more".
The most common worry — "duck lips" — comes from overdoing it and poor technique, not from the method itself. Too much product, or injecting in the wrong place, gives an unnatural, "inflated" look. That's why we follow one rule: for a first session, we work conservatively — it's easier to add more later than to correct excess.
A major advantage of hyaluronic acid is full reversibility. If the result doesn't suit you, or a complication arises, the product can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase), returning you to your starting point. This is one of the strongest arguments for choosing an original, recognised HA product and an experienced doctor — reversibility is a genuine safeguard.
How it works
Lip filler is cross-linked hyaluronic acid — individual molecules joined into a stable network that breaks down much more slowly than the free form. The doctor injects it into precisely defined layers: along the border of the vermilion when the goal is contour and lip "definition", or deeper, into the submucosal part of the lip, when the goal is volume and shape support. These are two different techniques with two different results — and the injection depth, product quantity and tool (needle or cannula) are decided by the doctor during consultation, after assessing facial proportions and medical suitability. The lip area is exceptionally rich in blood vessels, so knowledge of vascular anatomy matters here more than contouring technique alone.
The effect comes from two overlapping mechanisms. The gel physically takes up space in the tissue and supports it from within — hence the fullness and more defined lip edge. At the same time, hyaluronic acid binds water in amounts many times its own weight, and this hydration accounts for the softness and improved quality of chapped vermilion — as well as, in the first few days, the swelling that's often mistaken for the result. The product doesn't stay in the lip indefinitely: tissue enzymes gradually break it down, and the body absorbs the resulting fragments. Lips move with every word and every sip, so this happens faster than in less mobile areas — which is why the effect is inherently temporary and, for most people, lasts shorter than contouring the cheek or chin.
Did you know: the vermilion has no sebaceous or sweat glands — it's the only facial area that can't moisturise itself, because it has nothing to do it with. The stratum corneum here is also much thinner than elsewhere on the face, which is why blood vessels show through (giving lips their colour), and why lips chap in wind and cold much faster than the cheeks do.
Ideal for
The plan always relates to the whole face — it's not about "more", but about harmonious proportions. Sometimes the doctor's best recommendation is a small contour correction, or simply hydration, rather than augmentation.
The female zone and the male zone
This is by far the most common variant — lip augmentation for women. The goal is natural fullness, a defined, "clean" contour, a nicely shaped Cupid's bow and good hydration — all in proportion to the face. For some, we work on volume; for others, mainly on symmetry, shape, or lifting drooping corners.

Lip augmentation for men is much less common and, by nature, very subtle. It's almost never about augmentation, but about correcting proportions, symmetry and hydration — the result should be entirely undetectable as a "treatment". We work especially conservatively to preserve the natural, masculine character of the lips.

Did you know: hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already produces — it's partly responsible for hydration and tissue elasticity. Lip filler is the same compound in a stable, cross-linked form, which is why the body tolerates it well and, over time, breaks it down naturally.
Safety
The lip area is richly vascularised, so three things matter when contouring — and are worth asking about at any clinic:
This is a medical treatment — at J'adore it is performed exclusively by an aesthetic medicine doctor. The doctor knows the vascular anatomy, chooses the injection technique, and is responsible for correct qualification and any necessary correction.
We work exclusively with recognised, certified hyaluronic acid products from authorised distributors. This matters partly because genuine HA is reversible — it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, giving a real safeguard in case of complications or an unsatisfactory result.
The doctor chooses the technique (needle or cannula), the injection site and the amount individually — which is why consultation is mandatory, and why we assess the result only once swelling has settled.
Warning sign: suspiciously cheap lips · The most serious — though rare — risk with lip treatments is vascular complications, such as vessel occlusion. This isn't a treatment to cut corners on. A bargain price and an unknown product are the most common red flags. You have every right to ask about the name of the product, who's administering it, and whether it's reversible. A good clinic will answer without hesitation.
Contraindications
Some contraindications are permanent, and some are temporary — in the latter case, we simply postpone the treatment until the situation resolves.
From the doctor's practice
The most often overlooked issue: cold sores. Patients often think "it's just a tiny mark, far from the injection site". For lips, this still matters — an active virus carries a risk of reactivation, wherever it appears. It's better to postpone by a few days.

The visit
Medical consultation
the doctor assesses the proportions of the lips and the whole face, symmetry, contour and volume, agrees a realistic, natural goal with you, and selects the product. This includes taking a history — including an important question about cold sores.
Anaesthesia
the lips are a sensitive area, so a numbing cream is used, often together with a nerve block, and the products themselves usually contain lidocaine. This keeps the treatment comfortable.
Contouring
the doctor injects the product with a needle or cannula, shaping the contour as they go and checking symmetry and proportions. The work is gradual, assessing the result throughout.
Guidance and departure
you return to your day allowing for swelling; no bandages, but your lips will be noticeably swollen for the first few days.
Possible touch-up
once the result has settled (around 2 weeks), the doctor assesses whether a small top-up is needed.
What to expect
Honesty matters most here: lips swell noticeably. Right after the treatment and for the first few days, they can look distinctly larger, firmer and more "inflated" than the final result will be — this is swelling, not the outcome. It's completely normal, and there's no need to judge the treatment by it, or to worry.
Some clients message on day two saying "my lips are huge". That's swelling, not the result — please don't judge the outcome in the first few days. Only once the product has settled do you see the true shape and volume.

The most reassuring approach is asking about cold sores at consultation, not on the day of the treatment. If I know in advance that cold sores tend to recur, I can plan antiviral protection and the right timing — and we don't cancel the treatment at the last minute.

The practical takeaway: lip contouring should not be done right before an important event (a wedding, a photoshoot, a trip). Leave yourself a margin — ideally at least two weeks — so swelling has time to go down and the lips settle into their final look. Because lips are a very mobile area, they absorb product faster than, say, the cheeks, so a refresh session is available if needed.
Lips and your lifestyle
The first few days are about protecting the newly contoured lips and limiting swelling and bruising risk. There's one rule: don't irritate the freshly treated area, and don't make swelling worse with heat or exertion.
Don't massage or press on your lips for around 48 hours (unless the doctor recommends a gentle massage). Let the product settle.
Skip very spicy, hot and hard food for the first 24 hours — eat carefully so as not to irritate the lips.
Hold off on lipstick and lip liner for around 24 hours, until the small injection marks close up.
High temperatures increase swelling. Save the sauna, pool and hot baths for a few days later.
Sharply increased circulation encourages swelling and bruising — hold off on intense training for the first few days.
Protect your lips from intense sun, sunbeds and cold; use an SPF balm. Gentle cooling with clean compresses helps with swelling — ask the doctor about medication.
Alcohol dilates blood vessels and encourages swelling and bruising — best avoided on the day of the treatment and the day after. Discuss any blood-thinning medication with the doctor beforehand.
