What cellulite really is — and why it looks the way it does
Dimpled skin got its name for good reason. The dimples, small lumps and uneven texture on the thighs, buttocks or abdomen result from a specific process taking place in the subcutaneous tissue — not, as sometimes claimed, from toxin build-up or "poor" circulation. To understand why cellulite looks the way it does, we need to go one layer deeper and look at the structure of fat tissue.
Beneath the skin lies a layer of fat tissue that isn't evenly distributed. It's divided into chambers by vertical connective-tissue bands called septa. Picture a quilted cushion: the fabric on top (skin), the filling (fat), and the seams holding the filling to the base (septa). When fat cells enlarge or the septa lose elasticity, the filling literally pushes upward between the taut seams — creating the characteristic uneven texture on the skin's surface.
- Stage 1 — Soft cellulite. Visible only when the skin is pinched, invisible at rest. The septa begin to lose elasticity, and fat cells enlarge slightly. This is the stage where changes are most reversible.
- Stage 2 — Visible cellulite. Unevenness is visible both when pinched and in a normal standing position. Tissue changes run deeper, and circulation in the area is already noticeably impaired.
- Stage 3 — Established cellulite. Firm, tender to pressure, with distinct nodules. Tissue fibrosis and narrowed blood vessels give the changes a structural character — this stage calls for more advanced tools.
Why diet and exercise aren't enough
This is the question we hear most often — and it deserves a precise answer, not a generalisation. Diet and physical activity are valuable and genuinely affect the condition of the body, including fat tissue. Losing weight reduces the volume of fat cells, and regular movement improves circulation and overall skin condition. But cellulite is a problem that sits deeper than fat volume.
The core of the problem lies in tissue architecture — in how the septa are arranged, how elastic the skin above them is, and how well microcirculation functions in that area. None of these elements improve directly just by cutting calories. In fact, rapid weight loss can make cellulite look worse, because the skin loses firmness faster than the tissue beneath it can reorganise itself.

Four factors that drive cellulite
Cellulite rarely has a single cause. For most people, it's the result of several factors overlapping at once — which is why "just do X" almost never gives the full result. It's worth knowing them, to understand why one approach might work while another doesn't.

The predisposition to cellulite is inherited — both the type of tissue structure and sensitivity to oestrogen. Oestrogen encourages fat storage in the lower body and affects the elasticity of the septa. This is why cellulite often appears or worsens around puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

Microcirculation and lymph
Impaired circulation in the subcutaneous tissue is one of the main factors that worsen cellulite. When blood and lymph circulate poorly, tissue receives fewer nutrients, regenerates less effectively, and metabolic waste builds up locally. The result: tissue becomes more "swollen" and prone to fibrosis.

Skin elasticity
Thick, elastic skin with plenty of collagen "holds" the tissue beneath it better and masks unevenness. Thin skin, lacking firmness, exposes every change in the tissue below. This is why cellulite often becomes more visible with age, even without any change in body weight.

Long hours of sitting, tight clothing that compresses the thighs, smoking — all of this worsens local circulation. These aren't root causes, but they clearly intensify existing changes and slow tissue regeneration.
What actually reaches the root of the problem
Since the problem lies in tissue structure, microcirculation and skin elasticity, effective tools need to work exactly there — not on the surface, but deeper. In recent years, salons have gained access to methods that genuinely influence each of these elements, and this is an area that has developed very rapidly.
The logic behind effective cellulite treatment rests on three pillars: mechanically breaking down altered tissue (so the septa regain elasticity), improving microcirculation and drainage (so tissue is better nourished and free of stagnant fluid), and stimulating the skin to produce collagen (so the surface above the tissue becomes denser and firmer). For many people, the best results come from methods that address more than one of these pillars at once.
It's also worth saying plainly: cellulite isn't a one-treatment problem. Tissue that has changed over years needs time and a series of sessions — and maintaining results needs upkeep. This isn't a flaw in the methods; it's the nature of the problem itself. Approach any promise of permanent elimination after a single visit with caution.
Cellulite vs swelling — how to tell them apart
Some people say "I have cellulite" when what they actually have is mainly chronic lymphatic swelling — and vice versa. It's worth knowing the difference, because treatment differs. Swelling is fluid build-up in the tissue (legs swell by evening, the skin feels soft, dimples from pressure linger briefly). Cellulite is a structural change in the tissue — firmer nodules, dimpling visible regardless of time of day, a dimpled texture that doesn't ease with rest.
For many people, both issues overlap — and in that case, addressing each one separately gives better results than treating "something that looks similar". Lymphatic drainage, which works well for swelling, won't remove altered tissue structure. A cellulite treatment won't replace drainage work if the lymph genuinely isn't flowing. This, too, is exactly why consultation is the first step, not a formality.
